Like the subject line says.

I don't usually go to a steakhouse kind of restaurant, and one of my coworkers is relatively new in town. He's a steak afficionado, and needs ideas about where to go.

I've done Angus Barn, Fleming's, Sullivan's, Ruth's Chris, etc. He tried Angus Barn out this weekend and said the experience wasn't all that great.

Don't laugh, but one of my go-to places for a steak is often the PR.

Tell me what you got.

I like Sullivans, especially if we're awarding extra points for ambience. Went to The Peddler once years back and enjoyed it. I hear good things about Vinnie's too.

I second Beefmaster's. It's actually a nationally-rated steakhouse some places.

It's a small place, they don't open the doors til I think 5, and people are there waiting for them to open at 5 on the weekends.

Dan, we worked on senior project together on the Cat skid steerloader cabin. How you been?

I like Peddler's. But it's pricey.

Vinnie's in North Raleigh. Haven't had Peddler but I've heard great things.

Live right down the road from The Peddler, but never been. What makes it superior?

I wonder what makes any steak place superior? Not saying some retraunts do it better than othrs, but all it really comes down to is the quality of the meat... and then the right cooking temp and time, right? There aren't any other variables are there, except maybe the marinade/rub?

I do want to try the Peddler some time. The only real steak place I've been to is Flemings, and it was good, but nothing too special. When I get dragged to Outback I oftenget something other than steak.

Yeah Flemings is pretty meh, especially for the price. Outback on the other hand is a great value.

I will second Angus Barn being underwhelming. I would even go as far as to say 'garbage'. Of the three times I've been there: once they forgot to season the steak (not even a little bit of salt) and the other time I was with a large group and our steaks sat on their 'fancy' skillets under their heating lamps too long while they waited for all plates to be ready at the same time (mmm, leather). It's definitely a place which favors style over substance. In terms of taste, I'd rank them somewhere between an Applebees and a Chilis.

I've heard 1705 Prime is decent, but I've also heard its overpriced. Never been myself.

lol you rank them between Applebees and Chilis?

Angus Barn is damn good, it's just that people expect the world when they go there. I've never had a bad meal and the restaurant itself is pretty iconic for Raleigh. Yes, you can get a better steak for the same price elsewhere, but you're paying for the experience. Also, the cheese and whatnot they give each table is awesome.

Maybe I've just had bad experiences there. Forgetting to salt/season a steak is damn near unforgivable in my mind, though.

I've also tried to order the steak there with garlic butter (which they up charged) the next time I went, and I was expecting that to mean they would cook the steak in butter and garlic. I've had that before, and its hard to mess up (and delicious!). When it came to the table, though, it was a normal steak with a ramekin of melted butter with diced _raw_ garlic. I'm not exactly a steak aficionado, but . . . yeah . . .

Pro-tip:

Go to Fleming's for their "5 for 6 til 7" deal. They have 5 items each of select food and drinks for $6 until 7pm and you can get the carpaccio (which I am in love with). Also, they have a prime burger with the deal that is fantastic - they used to have a filet burger for like $16, which was a small filet sliced and put on a burger bun (med rare) - $42 in the dining room or $16 for the same thing on a bun. Not sure if that is still around.

They are just the big sister to Outback - which has nice steaks for the price.

I've been to Angus Barn 3 times total, each time I wondered why I spent money there.... It's never 'wowed' me. I do enjoy having a drink at the turkey lounge, but that is about it.

i went to Sullivan's for the first time this week. my boss was paying. had a ribeye and it was one of the best i've ever had. apps, baked potato, even the bread they bring out were all excellent. i don't think i'd ever go back if i'm paying.

although, they did have a pretty good deal going. appetizer, salad, and entree (one of the choices was a 6 oz filet with mashed potatoes) for $38, iirc. that's pretty good, imo, but 6 oz is just enough to piss me off

[Edited on August 27, 2014 at 11:15 PM. Reason : been to angus barn once and was unimpressed considering their price, but i wasn't paying then either]
