Had a question about getting a second dog.

We have a 5-6 year old female Basset Hound, and were thinking about getting a second dog. We enjoy the fact that female dogs do not have the desire to urinate on everything and mark territory in the house, so we wanted to pursue another female dog. We were thinking about a 3-4 year old Boxer.

Have any of you ever had a female boxer in the same house as a female basset? Do they tend to get along?

We definitely don't want to get another dog if they are prone to disagree, and I've tried to search on the internet and I just can't find any type of breed comparison like that.

from my experience, boxers will get along with anyone and anything. and bassets are just chill as shit anyway

although, by adopting a boxer that is already 3-4 years old, you run the risk that the past owner abused her.

i have read that females tend to have dominance issues with each other alot whereas a male/female combo is less likely to have that power struggle.

I have a neutered male and spayed female and they get along great and have never gotten aggressive with one another. I also haven't had any issues with the male marking territory. Fixing them helps with that.

yeah, I have a 3 year old neutered male pointer mix. he has never marked in the house, and my friends bring their dogs over all the damn time.

^^^ I think if you adopt a rescue dog, you run that risk every time

i have just always had puppies. mine was a pound rescue too, but he was 10 weeks old when I got him

Ok i wanted to get a second dog but being a softy i wanted to adopt... but no one will let me adopt a female dog into a house with a female dog... No matter how much i explain that my dog prefers females and doesn't take kindly to being mounted by males they still won't let me do it.

My dog is female and all her 'friends' (mom's dog, brother's dog, neighbors's dog) are all females and they all get a long great. for days at a time even. i guess thats different than living together though

Yeah my old roomate's dog, and all of my neighbors dogs are females and they're like best friends. I mean i dog sit females ALL THE TIME and they still won't let me get another.

If you don't want a male dog marking territory all the time have him neutered at a young age. I had my dog neutered at 6 months and he's never had a problem marking anything. He's actually very well housetrained.

it depends on the individual dogs. every dog is different.

just let the dogs meet each other in a neutral area before you adopt to see how they get along.

^ The problem is that it's located in Blue Ridge Mountains, and I would like our dog to be in her natural setting to see how she responds.

It's one thing for them to meet on the street while walking, or at a dog park, but she may be defensive about her own house...I dunno

I've found similar problems in dealing with adoption centers. They make it substantially easier to do the wrong thing. I hope they are aware of that.

The no-kill shelters are full of BS. If Wake AC won't let you adopt go to a more rural county. $25 will get you any dog in the shelter no questions asked usually.

You should look into the 'Carolina Basset Rescue' club (or something like that). I think they have about 50-60 bassets at the moment. All the profiles have pictures and bios.
