Where can I adopt a puppy for free or for a relatively cheap price.

orange county animal sheltershould run about $80
3/29/2007 11:23:36 PM
in or around raleigh
3/29/2007 11:24:16 PM
yeah. that 20 minute drive to chapel hill is asking a bit much.
3/29/2007 11:32:01 PM
wake county SPCA down tryon. $115 for dogs and puppies, includes microchipping, spay/neuter, and they're all up-to-date on shots, vaccines, and heartworm meds. so considering that all that medical attention is worth MUCH more than $115.. it's relatively cheap.

Wake County animal shelter off highway 64... new facility, lots and lots of dogs to choose from. When I adopted my puppy about 8 months ago they had countless other puppies there including two German Shepherds... so you should try that place out. As long as the dog doesn't have heartworm, it will run you a little more than $100, but its well worth it.

OMG DO NOT GO TO THE SPCAIts easier to adopt a fucking baby from china than a dog from there. Its over a hundred bucks and takes WEEKS.http://www.harnettanimalcontrol.com/adoption_list.cfmIf you are thinking about a puppy get it from a kill shelter. Harnett County is only $20. They put all dogs that have been there at least 3 days down every Wednesday. Its a long drive but worth it to get a dog cheaper. Call out there and ask what they have if u don't see anything on the website. They are too fucking lazy to post all of the dogs they have. (The puppy I got was not posted at all and her sisters were put down the following day )

^^because they make sure people aren't animal abusers and stuff, and they want to make sure the animal will fit your lifestyle. they don't want to have someone adopt a dog and then 2 weeks later bring it back because it didn't work out. and it may be only $20 at Harnett County, but then you have to take it to to vet and it will be way more expensive than $115.i can't really argue against adopting in general, though.. just had to stick up for the SPCA. so wherever the original poster goes to get a dog is just fine.
3/30/2007 9:03:44 AM
yea.. i adopted a kitten from Wake SPCA and the adoption process took less than an hour. All they're doing is making sure the animal is going to a good home. They don't hand animals to just anyone. They want to make sure the dog will be well taken care of - taken to a vet and fed. Not chained on a 5 foot chain to a doghouse and forgotten. I rescue puppies from kill shelters and foster them. I do screen potential adopters. I check out their home and help them gather needed supplies. If someones never had a dog before I educate them by giving them information. Why does the puppy have to be free or cheap? When you word it like that... If you're worried about money then maybe you shouldn't get a dog. The first year of an animals life will cost you between $400 and $800 in vet bills to have it vaccinated and fixed. Plus food, crate and everything else. An adoption fee of $100-$200 for an uptodate vaccinated and fixed dog from the SPCA is a deal! you're saving money and saving a life. The money goes back into the organization so they can help other animals.I do have 4 puppie currently available for adoption (3 rescued from Harnett county and 1 that was abandoned) If you're interested pm me.

The Harnett County animal control charges $20 per animal, and proof of impending rabies vaccines. The Roanoke Rapids Humane Society is hosting an adoption fair this weekend. http://www.rrhsorg.org They'll have tons of dogs/cats to choose from.

Isn't the Franklin County Animal Shelter also really cheap?
3/30/2007 11:13:10 AM
I think Franklin charges $20 now.. i'm not sure. I've never been charged.they aren't seen by a vet at Franklin and HarnettI would recommend taking them to a vet ASAP since the animals there have been exposed to a lot of animals (majority of which aren't vaccinated). Many animals pulled from these shelters can have heartworms too.

If you go the animal fair I mentioned above, all the animals are free for adoption. They all come spade/neutered and with all their shots. For more information call (252)792-2535 *Please ask for Teri* It's in Williamston, which is about an hour and 20 minutes east of Raleigh, but it may be worth the drive for a free adoption, with all this included.

^ Do they have a site where I can look at them? And I would like a pup, no dogs over a 1 year old
3/30/2007 12:46:48 PM
Yeah, I posted it a few up, but here it is again. http://www.rrhsorg.orgIf you call, they'll be able to tell you if there are more. When I spoke with Teri today, she conveyed that there were much more than what's on the site.ChaChi is a 3 month old black lab, and absolutely adorable. And you can fill out an adoption application online, or print it and bring it with you to save time.[Edited on March 30, 2007 at 12:54 PM. only reason it took me a while to get my dog was because they had to neuter him, which was fine with me...
3/30/2007 1:05:36 PM
http://apsofdurham.orgwe got both our dogs there, and it was a great process - it was $120 bucks to adopt, neuter, and get them updated on shots[Edited on March 30, 2007 at 2:35 PM. Reason : whoops]

you just have to know what they want to hear on those SPCA applications. they don't want you to have any other pets, they dont' want you to work much, they don't want you to have children. they want you to have a yard and lots of time. they don't verify anything, just tell them what they want to hear.
3/31/2007 9:51:47 AM
Yeah right I told them I own my house and she logged on to the Tax records site, checked, and even commented that I go by my middle name.
3/31/2007 9:55:39 AM
^^I've heard from several people that they go around and check on you after you get the animal
3/31/2007 10:00:45 AM
me ex got two puppies from the spca (they refused to adopt out just one)but it took a lot of information, phone calls, checking leases, ownership, approval, etc but they never called or checked up at a later datejust remember that "outside is play, and inside is home" if you're getting a dog from the SPCA
3/31/2007 10:27:53 AM
$400 for my purebred puppy when I got him. I've easily dropped three grand in the last year on him when you consider vet, medication, toys, bed, crate, leashes, collars, car harness, etc. It's still the best money I've spent in quite some time. Cost isn't an issue when it comes to your best friend.
3/31/2007 5:20:04 PM
