Chop -- buy the POM brand pomegranate juice. It is the only stuff I've found that is truly 100% pomegranate juice. If you look on other juices you'll see other additives but the POM stuff is pure pomegranate. It is quite tangy.

My mom had a pomegranate tree in our back yard growing up. It would produce about 2 or 3 good pomegranates every other year or so. Also - that new Minute Maid Pomegranate/Blueberry juice is delicious. Not a big fan of the sugar free and low calorie versions but the regular kind is glorious.
10/25/2009 11:51:58 AM
ok... i broke down and bought one of these alien fruits... i got all of the red pod things out of the husk... what do i do with them now?
10/25/2009 2:16:44 PM
eat them!
10/25/2009 3:10:01 PM
how to open a pomegranate:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHyqoeB0Wlk
10/25/2009 3:18:47 PM
just plain? turns out the pods have inner seeds... can you eat those too?
10/25/2009 3:19:08 PM
when i cut into it, the damn thing started bleeding.
10/25/2009 3:19:40 PM
I eat the arils and the seeds inside them -- they taste wonderful. If they 'bleed' while you cut into them it means they should be extra juicy. It might also mean that you're cutting into them too much -- just score down the sides a bit to pull the fruit open.[Edited on October 25, 2009 at 3:40 PM. Reason : ]

Yes, you chew and eat the seeds as well.It would be a great shame and a disservice if you chewed them and spit them out, as a lot of people do.Pomegranates are one of the healthiest foods on the planet... don't waste them.
10/25/2009 3:41:27 PM
ok i just finished up my pomegranate. i put the pods in the fridge, and that made them better to me. the seeds weren't a problem.it sucks that they have so much damn sugar in them though... won't be able to enjoy any more of these things. [Edited on October 25, 2009 at 6:44 PM. Reason : ]
10/25/2009 6:43:35 PM
I agree that the arils taste better if the fruit has been refrigerated. What's the deal with the sugar? Will these things give me diabeetus?
10/25/2009 7:06:14 PM
i dunno... it just tastes very sweet to me.
10/25/2009 7:16:55 PM
http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/2038/2lots of sugar.

i've started to use the arils on salads, in place of bacon bitsgives the crunch factor, quite a bit more healthy, and quite deliciousmakes even a bland salad pop

OMG is it pomegranate season again??!!!??? I have a hard time deciding which season is my favorite. Summer - berries on sale! Fall - squash on sale! Late fall - POMS!!!I like putting the seeds in a tupperware and bringing them to work to eat with a spoon for a snack.
10/25/2009 8:34:00 PM
i went to the grocery store this afternoon hoping to try some, but there was nary a pomegranate to be found..
10/25/2009 8:51:43 PM
For some strange reason, the kroger in garner has poms by the butcher section - right there by ground beef.
10/25/2009 9:00:18 PM
i went to HT tonight and bought 2 of the biggest poms i've ever seen. i can't palm them (like pick one up with one hand). you could probably throw one at someone's head and kill them.and they were soooooooooo good for dessert.
10/25/2009 9:10:42 PM
10/25/2009 9:37:18 PM
loooove pomegranates. whole foods had them on sale 3 for $6 the other day. i love putting the arils in my oatmeal w/ walnuts. YUM.
10/25/2009 11:09:02 PM
they have MUCH more sugar than a lot of fruits...Apple:http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1809/2Pear:http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/2074/2Orange:http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1966/2

^ that is true if you eat the entire pomegranate in one sitting. however, you can just eat a few spoonfuls (or even half a cup) of the arils and you'll be right on par with the fruits you listed.
10/26/2009 7:50:02 AM
it doesn't matter how many sittings i eat it in, the sugar content is still there.
10/26/2009 9:29:52 AM
but would you eat 5 apples in one sitting
10/26/2009 9:31:30 AM
no, but i wouldn't eat a bowl of ice cream either, which has less sugar than a pomegranate has.[Edited on October 26, 2009 at 9:52 AM. Reason : ]
10/26/2009 9:52:23 AM
eh. You really need to view it on a better comparative basis:This is based on grams of sugar / 100g of fruit for some popular fruits:Fig - 16Grapes - 16Pomegranate -14Cherries - 13Apple - 11Pears - 11Pineapple - 10Cantaloupe - 9A "large" apple is listed at just over 200g. Comparing eating 200g of apple to 200g of pomegranate is the difference between ~22g and 28g of naturally occurring sugar. To add to that, when dealing with daily healthy limits of grams of sugar, the number is almost always explicitly meaning added sugar. The sugar in these fruits is really nothing to be alarmed about.[Edited on October 26, 2009 at 10:32 AM. Reason : ]

Just got 3 ENORMOUS poms from the grocery store!!!! like se7entythree said, I can't even palm these poms all this discussion of sugar is ridiculous. Smath I can't believe you would even compare a pom to a bowl of ice cream. unless you are just trolling as usual Either way I will tolerate no more insults to the honor of the pomegranate, the most delicious of fruits. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!! ]
10/26/2009 6:48:18 PM
lol...i saw some poms and was all...Britta is clapping her hands with glee for this years pomegranate season
10/26/2009 8:09:26 PM
i just seeded three pomsi remembered this time to wear my "cuttin' up poms" t-shirtthey j000sy
10/26/2009 8:12:23 PM
10/26/2009 8:22:07 PM
how do yall eat them without removing the seeds? I eat them individually as a snack food and eat the flesh of the them, spit out seed
10/26/2009 8:28:29 PM
CalledToArms beat me to it.Yes, you need to see sugar/100 grams of the fruit. And here is one that he missed:Banana: 12 g/100 g, which is pretty close to that of poms, and bananas have a higher glycemic load than poms! So, bananas will increase blood sugar levels more than poms would. And anyway, if you eat them after a meal, it won't make a difference to your blood sugar.

10/26/2009 9:04:20 PM
^^I was watching man vs food and was curious. the ice cream/pomegranate comment was just that it would taste good. I don't eat ice cream anymore. (well, I haven't since August anyhow.)
10/26/2009 10:43:51 PM
ugh you people...I just broke down and got 3 of them. 3 for 5 bucks at Krogers.
10/28/2009 9:00:17 PM

10/28/2009 10:11:44 PM

11/1/2009 3:26:39 PM
we had a pomegranate tree/bush in our backyard growing up... i don't see what the big deal is with them. they're full of gross seeds
11/1/2009 3:53:54 PM
here is the big deal:1) they are delicious2) they are one of the healthiest foods on the planetthose "gross seeds" are what's delicious. you stick to apples and bananas. more poms for us
11/1/2009 3:59:54 PM
ok well if they could create a seedless pomegranate, i'd be into it... but srsly... why do i want to sit there spitting out seed after seed
11/1/2009 4:00:49 PM
11/1/2009 4:21:42 PM
