I'm baaaaack...I dunno if I will head out to the field tomorrow; we just got back from a little jaunt down to Alabama and then Mississippi...Beth's grandmother died, and we went to the funeral. My ass is draggin'...both cheeks. 1500 miles of driving in three days. If I get out there, maybe the wind will be calm enough to try out the extra wing panels...but then I may just sleep all frickin day.

i went out there today. got the engine to run twice (once backwards, once the right way). i should've let it warm up more and leaned it out some (it was super rich) before i pulled the glow plug clip. it died, and i never could get it going again.oh well, maybe try again in a few days.
10/24/2004 6:44:58 PM
oh you got jokes, zaxbysappeal
10/24/2004 6:46:16 PM
duke and i went out to dix with his profile geebee tuesday, but his rx had been on like all night so his battery was dead... i went out and threw the glider some yesterday. sounds like everyone is coming out sunday... i'll be there
10/27/2004 3:11:40 PM
Coming out on Thunday? oooo....I think I will have to be there too. I need a little (relatively) mindless distraction.
10/27/2004 3:14:43 PM
i could make it out tomorow i bet
10/27/2004 3:18:13 PM
I would like to. I don't know if I can. you missed my joke, man...

10/27/2004 3:30:36 PM
Anyone good with paint? I'm thinking about ordering 2 1/10 truck bodies, but I don't want to paint them. I could buy pre-painted ones, but thought I would check. Maybe I'll just try it myself anyhow.
10/27/2004 4:47:45 PM
i'll do it for a lil $... i'll show you some of my work tonight (pics)
10/27/2004 4:57:47 PM
discovered today that the motor in my plane was rusted up inside (first hint was bearing knock...i took it apart and discovered that it was just nasty).sooo, i happened to be down at granddad's place, and he just goes "hey, pull a Supertigre .51 off the shelf and see if the bolt pattern will match up to where that .46 FX was installed. if it does, put it on there." (THANKS, GRANDDAD!!)sure enough, it fit exactly-so with the plane loaded for bear with that .51, i made 2 flights. it was rather underpropped (11-6) and running really rich for break in, but i don't think power is gonna be much of an issue .
10/30/2004 6:51:42 PM
nice
10/30/2004 8:46:47 PM
I told Duke that I would have been envious to have a granddad like that.On another note...fly tomorrow? BTW, Bryan...I fould a good way to cut yer circles you were wanting (to do like your dithered or whatever you call dot density print Monokote jorb)...Xacto makes what's called a swivel knife...what we in the trade used to call a drag blade. Sign shops use the same principle with their vinyl cutting plotters. Lets you do contours and such without lifting the blade offa tha medium. You can use that and a standard compass to do circles. The knife is about nine bucks or so. I might just pick one up for the fuck of it.
10/30/2004 10:16:10 PM
oh cool that sounds perfect!and yes, flying today... i've got to fix my vertical stab on the dlg... i was flying this morning at my old middle school and had a couple rough landings. thermal activity out there was awesome tho... many long flights.
10/31/2004 1:20:20 PM
Well, Duke wrung 'er out today. Flying a Gee Bee profile fun-fly plane sporting a Supertigre G51 engine...he's got skillz, I tell ya.Right up until he's circling around to shoot a landing. Plane flies real well slow...right up until it quits flying. Dropped a tip, and for a built brickbat, it would have been a cartwheel. But the Gee Bee was designed with weight conservation in mind, and being a built up profile, she cracked in half right behind the wing. But the show was good while it lasted. That looks like a really fun plane. When it's in one piece! And I had a good time myself today. Some new glasses would be nice. I can't see what I'm doing as of late. Proof positive that lots of masturbation did more harm than good.
10/31/2004 10:07:49 PM
CA makes a great field suture...
11/1/2004 8:39:46 AM
oh yeah you got a nice cut... how is it doin?
11/1/2004 9:40:35 AM
nicely. Still superglued shut, a little sore. I hate when I chip a nail. It's kinda cool, because the superglue also acts as an antiseptic...Boys and girls, this is what happens when you are too lazy to take your fat ass to a position BEHIND the plane prior to adjusting the needle valve. It can be accomplished from in front, but you've gotta WATCH THAT FUCKING PROP, cuz she is a bitch when she hits ye...Stupid fucking Mavica digital camera does miss so much detail.[Edited on November 1, 2004 at 10:02 AM. Reason : time for a new camera...]
11/1/2004 10:01:55 AM
ima have to try that ca thing sometime... i've been scared to in the past, but since you're still alive i guess its safe. did you put it inside or just on the outside?that balsa tail i had on my dlg is scrap... i'm gonna make a 1/8" foam one and do 3/4 oz fg on the outside. should be lighter than stock and much stronger than the balsa one. man i was impressed with Oleg's plane and flying capabilities... man that thing was nice. of course, he's like the leading expert in DLG in the country, so that may have something to do with it.
11/1/2004 12:49:15 PM
ok i took some pics and they arent great but i cant resist sharing... First one is the 6' glider i started in 8th grade... The progress you see is where i stopped right before the end of middle school. I designed it and ran into some trouble with the wing... Need to make the outer panels again and probly modify the nose with a motor since its not gonna fly very well as a glider, but hey, 8th grade right?Second one is my discus launch glider. This is probably the most fun airplane I own simply because it isnt powered and flies almost a minute and a half in dead (no thermal) air on a launch. Its also built mostly out of carbon fiber, kevlar, and fiberglass, which gives it tons of cool points right off the bat.Third is the P-40 I keep promising to finish... The holdup mainly is finding a 2.5" spinner that doesnt weigh eight thousand pounds... I'm gonna have to make one. The vertical tail is somewhere in my room... Its made of pink house insulation foam with touches of kevlar and fiberglass and a balsa stick here or there, and is covered in Econokote film. 280 size brushed motor, 4:1 gearbox spinning a lightweight 10-6 prop.and the bottom of the wing:

about to start my first plane. my uncle is going to show me the ropes and hopefully around christmas I'll be flying solo
11/4/2004 1:43:16 AM
Lookie what I got $35 for airframe, motor/gearbox/prop, and all hardware... another $70 for 2 servos, reciever, and ESC.Should be fun, and now i've got something for the lady (and whoever) to fly!

Maidened tonight on top of dan allen parking deck... WHAT FUN! Damn this thing flies slow! Nice climb out too. Unfortunately even the slightest breeze takes this thing for a ride... I was flying figure eight between light poles and almost clipped one on more than one occasion.
11/7/2004 4:32:42 AM
You suck...Unfortunately, I am out for today...Jeremy's birthday, so it's off to check out GameFrog at Cary Towne Center. He's full tilt into games.
11/7/2004 11:00:43 AM
well sunday was quite a short session... first the slow stick got nosed in from about 35' up... the flyer at the time didnt realize that "back" was "up" and she plowed it... my mistake for not telling her. only damage was a broken prop and bent output shaft on the gearbox. a good excuse to get a decent 12-8 APC electric prop, hardened shaft, and 'squishy' prop adapter (holds it on with an o-ring)then i was testing out the new vertical i made for the dlg (this one is really cool... just came out too heavy...) and i launched SUPER hard into a good stiff breeze and snapped the boom back where the pushrods came out... luckilly it didnt break all the way, so the plane was landable. before i fly it again i'm going to redo the launch peg, make a new vertical yet again, repair the boom, and fill where the wing peg goes into the fuselage with epoxy/baloons, cause it is wallowing out a little.how did the gaming go? or is that a store?[Edited on November 9, 2004 at 6:17 PM. 11/12/2004 11:29:48 AM
Damn, that one looks good as fuck.On another note, I found a really cool electric motor and prop setup. We got Jeremy one of those remote control flying saucers that you can buy for 20 bucks at AC Moore and some of those stupid fucking kiosks in Cary Towne Center...it's really kinda neat.Comes with a charger (charges in 15 minutes), and the motor, receiver, speed control, and battery pack are all mounted on a circuit board that's around 2" in diameter. What's so cool is that the prop is BIG (like between 8 and 9 inches), and it has a simple gear reduction. Produces lots of thrust for around 5 minutes.I am gonna get one and do a fanfold with it, I think.
11/12/2004 3:51:03 PM
cool man! that sounds like a neat setup!you want some fanfold? i got plenty

I've decided to get back into this hobby. I want to go electric this time, preferably some kind of park flyer or at least decently small. Does anybody have any recommendations for a nice easy to fly but fairly aerobatic electric aircraft?I used to fly a 1/4 scale Cap 232 (Sold), and I also have a Sig Somethin' Extra (that's missing a wing ). But since I haven't flown in a while I don't want anything too crazy.
11/14/2004 10:02:13 PM
dude, go to http://www.rcgroups.com and go to the 3D section under electric planes... actually dont limit yourself to there... browse around. there are tons of cool unlimited vertical near indistructible planes out there... and a number of nice light balsa planes too.
11/14/2004 10:09:22 PM
This hobby has not only greatly expanded since I got out of it, but it seems to have become more affordable as well.
11/14/2004 10:10:39 PM
its fucking amazing what is available for very little $... That slow stick i got is a great trainer and could be had ready to go for about $200... I wish i had gotten that instead of a big .40 size trainer when i got into the hobby 7 years ago... i'd be much farther along as a pilot!
11/14/2004 10:16:13 PM
i haven't even started on the Gee Bee, yet. i've been too busy with my cars.
11/14/2004 10:27:10 PM
gotcha
11/14/2004 10:37:29 PM
it flies! quite well in fact... very quick! i nose planted it on top of the colloiseum deck tonight... just reshaped the nose with my hands and tossed it back up! i've got some glitching problems, especially near full throttle... but it flies perfectly fine at half.
11/16/2004 1:04:53 AM
daaaannnn... whats goin on with the blimpy thing?
11/16/2004 3:06:18 PM
