I enjoy Old Crow Medicine Show and Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, but they are a progressive spinoff of bluegrass.
1/11/2010 12:48:18 PM

LOL@bluegrass snobs in this thread. Bluegrass is really anti-snob music. And that video of Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin on Letterman is one of my favorites.

is this the thread where a bunch of people come in and go "omg i love bluegrass, avett brothers are my favorite band"
3/3/2010 11:40:43 PM
maybe, I've kinda jumped in the thread late, but dont really plan to read the rest of it. It seems like the BLuegrass vs Americana vs Folk vs etc etc blah blah has been somewhat explained and people are just talking about artist similar to the avett brothers but not really . .. . . .. . .......... . .. .. . . . .. . . .. its not really that hard of a music genre to explain or understand, but at the same time there are a lot of people that dont like to throw around labels and what not
3/3/2010 11:44:30 PM
hell ya. you should look up a group called The Major Sevens. They're from boone and they're FIRE. they're playing at Lincoln Theatre on March 25.[Edited on March 3, 2010 at 11:51 PM. Reason : I CAN'T SPELL FOR SHIT]

I love me some bluegrass
3/4/2010 2:30:03 AM
IMO this is a perfect bluegrass song. Up-tempo, high skill solos, catchy lyrics. If only it was a bit longer.Ricky Skaggs - Little Maggiehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbeBRvCO7cw

My friend introduced me to Carolina Chocolate Drops and I love them! I've just begun listening to the bluegrass junction channel on sirius, it seems to be the only station to keep my interest during my commute. I highly recommend it if any of you are using sirius.

"omg i love bluegrass, avett brothers are my favorite band" jk^bluegrass junction is a fun station. XM subscribers (yes i know they are the same now, but this station is still XM only) have Folk Village, i think it's either 15 or 17, and it's a pretty good channel as well. They play a lot of slower stuff though, so you have to be in the mood for it more.and if you want a mix of it all - bluegrass, american, alt. country, folk-rock then listen to the Loft.
3/4/2010 7:55:21 AM
it's 15. 17 is my favorite, prime country

LunaK and I were driving past the Birchmere in Alexandria last night and, lo and behold, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mtn Boys were playing. It turned out to be a phenomenal concert, even if the good Dr did forget the lyrics to a few songs The man was rocking it out for an 87 year old and I was fortunate enough to speak with him briefly and get a CD signed. Good times for an accidental find

me! my dad plays the guitar and the mandolin, and i was raised on the music. big fan of the trio, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, and allison krauss, and steve martin.also love the "americana" stuff and other things that stem from it or whatever. found some awesome bands while i was at merlefest this year and last year. <3 scythian, cadillac sky, and great big sea.

So, for those of you Bluegrass / Folk / New Folk / Americana / Alt. Country / Not-really-nameable-but-has-bluegrassy-instruments-in-it-but-don't-call-it-bluegrass fans I recommend to you the Blue Ridge Outdoors Trail Mix. Every month they post 12 - 20 free downloads of bands they've collected. Some are really good, most are enjoyable and I've only deleted one or two. Worth a listen for free. Most months have a theme, this one being the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival: http://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/blue-ridge-music/trail-mix/
