I'm in the process of changing jobs right now and thought this was a pretty good heads up:How Recruiters Read Resumes In 10 Seconds or Less

1/20/2010 4:58:51 PM
Yeah, I'm not a recruiter, but when I was hiring it took me all of about 10 seconds to toss an application if that.

Week 3 and still nothing. I got about 3 temp positions I'm looking at that are moving real slow. I had a phone interview on one and don't know when and/or if they will do a face-to-face interview.

*raises hand* FML.i need a job....in the downtown cary area. i feel like a snob for not even applying to these $8/hr jobs...am i the only one? id rather be broke and lazy than work my ass off for almost nothing after they rape you with taxes.

If you're a US citizen, hit up the federal government employment booths (i.e. NAVAIR, NAVSEA Warfare Centers, etc). Pay will be decent and your relocation will likely be paid for by the government (i.e. you sit on your ass and watch people pack up your shit and move it).Government employment may not be something you'd want to stick with for even as much as five years of your life, but in times like these the benefits are very helpful, especially for a recent graduate.

So, I found a job in Florida... Yay, thankfully I haven't had to collect unemployment yet. I have a question for all you job seekers: Say your significant other was helping you find jobs, giving you advice on cover letters, resumes and where to look... In addition to that, this person is also sending you links to potential places... How would that make you feel? You think its a little pushy? Or more so supportive? Also, does anyone have advice for someone seeking a job in the construction industry?
1/22/2010 10:06:35 AM
supportive
1/22/2010 10:13:25 AM
Figure just released of bureau of labor statistics. NC went from 10.7 to 11.2 in December. Not entirely suprising considering all the layoffs seemed to hit right before then, but thats a pretty big jump.

I for one enjoy having an unemployed SO
1/22/2010 12:35:17 PM
Well it wouldn't bother me having an umemployed SO, but I think what bothers me more is that he has no clue what he wants to do and I not only have one job offer in Florida but I also have one in Winston Salem and so it would be nice to know what HE wants to do or plans to do. He feels awful, like anyone looking for a job, and I am trying to tell him/ give him advice about what he should do. And anyone trying to find a job, all I can say is apply to as many jobs as you can. And for those jobs that you can dig up the information regarding the person in charge of the position, contact them directly. Bypass the HR bullshit. I did that with both of the jobs that were offered to me. Finding a job IS a FULL TIME JOB folks! I hope the best of luck tho to everyone that has to post their situation.
1/22/2010 2:19:10 PM
It sure as hell would bother me, especially if they had no clue what they wanted to do with their life.

You sir sound like you have a low potential ROI. That is probably more of a concern than the current state of unemployment. Not that I have a lot of room to talk. My man seems to have the most enthusiasm for fixing xboxes and ps3s (but at least he does a damn fine job of it and will be buying some high tech shiznit to make it even better soon).

I have a MS in aerospace engineering. I blame my job woes on two main factors (other than being a slacker):1 - I'm living in Charlotte and looking for a job in Charlotte. There is no aerospace whatsoever around here, so I'm trying the "AE is almost the exact same thing as ME" route. I'm getting almost no feedback from my applications. I have the feeling that I get thrown out of most jobs up front by a screener. "Aerowhatawhat? What the hell does this dude want? We're looking for mechanical engineers, not freaking pilots. Into the trash you go." During the interview I had last month, the engineering manager I was talking to said, "I see you're AE. I really consider AE and ME the same things." And I was all "Thank god! That's what I've been trying to tell people!"2 - Lower level jobs (technicians, even crap-o part time jobs) see very little ROI with me. They know that I'm only looking at their jobs as a very temporary solution and I'm getting the hell out of there the first chance I get. I can't blame them for thinking this - it's true.At least, that's the spin I like to put on it.

The wife got a job today! Graduated in May and has been looking since (and before graduation obviously). Its 6mo minimum contract, long hours at first, and not a job she will absolutely love, but its good pay and 1.5xhourly OT, with a possibility of extension or a move into a full-time hire this fall. Plus it is in a different division of the company I work for so we can carpool
1/25/2010 2:09:28 PM
I'm joining this list very soon! Yay unemployment!
1/25/2010 2:20:01 PM
Yes sir, I fall into this category.

Tl, sounds like you need to talk to the potential supervisors and bypass HR. Most HR people will throw out your resume because they know shit about engineering, but if you can talk with the tech people you might stand a chance. My man was overqualified for his last position but not unreasonably so (he took a position that didn't fully use his degree to gain management experience). Hopefully he can land something similar soon.

I was forwarding my wife job postings etc. until she found one this week. For the most part she really appreciated it. At times I'm sure even someone who appreciates it feels overwhelmed or that their SO is being pushy tho. Each person is different and if he says straight up he is ok with it, then go ahead.

Up until Nov. 9 I was unemployed. I then took a full-time job but I am payed hourly. Recently I have been invited to interview with Duke Energy at their expense. (Hotel + travel) It's kind of tough to fit in my schedule, but I think I can pull it off if I go on a Monday and just make up my work the rest of the week.Do I tell my boss I will be interviewing with another company, not in the same industry, or do I go and lie my ass off? I like my job, but it is hard to turn down a career at Duke E.
1/29/2010 2:08:27 PM
I would lie.Never tell anyone the real reason you did something unless it is useful to do so.
1/29/2010 2:14:39 PM
lie your ass off.
1/29/2010 2:15:10 PM
just found out this morning ill be starting work monday!
1/29/2010 2:57:12 PM
grats!
1/29/2010 10:53:36 PM
It is not a good idea to tell your current boss you are taking a day off to interview for another job......you might soon be unemployed and posting in this thread....wait....
1/31/2010 10:32:44 PM
1 month and still nothing
2/1/2010 9:14:04 AM
Almost a month now. Three interviews later and still nothing.I did the unthinkable today, I tapped into my savings. I think I'm going into depression mode.
2/1/2010 10:36:44 AM
^ I'm there already
2/1/2010 12:29:06 PM
it happens........it's tough, man. what're y'all doing to find a job?
2/1/2010 12:40:39 PM
I finally signed an offer to work part-time for the company that laid me off last February. I went almost a year unemployed and ended up back where I started doing the same job for less money and with no benefits (since I'll be part-time). I'm just glad to be employed again and using my degree. To those that are out of work currently, keep your heads up. It could always be worse.
2/1/2010 12:53:23 PM
I found an ad on Craigslist that eeriely similar to an old job I had that I was terminated from. I told a former co-worker about it. It didn't think it was for the same company and told me to apply and see what happens. I did but still think its my old job.I've been looking on Monster, Craigslist, and Careerbuilder as well as various pharm companies and hospitals.
2/1/2010 4:18:43 PM
Congrats, Cody! I know it could be worse, so keep looking

So I was contacted by a company I interviewed with back in August, she said they wanted to hold onto my information because they liked me but didn't have an applicable position. Now she says she has a temp part-time one but the website only lists a paid internship for a programmer (not a student and not a programmer). I'll interview again just to find out what it is but I'm starting my own company and I've already put my heart and soul (and bank account) into that so it would have to be very temp and very part time.If it's not something I'm interested in I'll be glad to post here and let some of you know what they want. The internship is for an OO Programmer and it pays $12-15/hr.

Has anybody looked into the State Census jobs?
2/2/2010 3:50:38 PM
i've heard a lot about them....they're advertising them a lot. let me know if you find anything out.
2/3/2010 6:16:57 PM
^^^ i might have a job. for 4 weeks. that's how temp it is but it is right up my alley so it can't hurt. hopefully he calls back in the morning.

interesting career fair today... got a few decent leads/contacts.career fairs still amaze me on how many indians are there. I just hope all the indians who come to the US to do their master's don't decide to start doing MechEng instead of the normal EE/CPE/CSC. if they do I might have even more competition than now..

Yeah I figured that much... I just don't think the SO is putting himself out like he should... He should have researched at least a few companies he is interested in like the projects and so on and actually start up conversations about those projects... I think that would show those employers that are hiring that he is serious about getting a job. Or even to employers that are not even hiring and may be hiring in the future.
2/4/2010 8:50:34 AM
Yea I know what you mean.
