A few months ago, I accidentally knocked a hole in the wall when I was moving a couch into my apartment. It's about the size of a small apple.

Now, my lease is running up, and I was wondering if it would be cheaper to just fix it myself or to just let my deposit take care of it. Anyone ever been charged for a hole in the wall by their apartment that can give me an idea of what it will cost?

I takes like 10 minutes. You buy a hole repair kit for 10 bucks or less, it's a peice of sticky steel mesh that covers the hole. You then spackle over it and paint.

i threw a guy into a wall in college and we were able to build it up flush with putty and the painters for the condo people were already there so we gave them 20 bucks to spray their eggshell color over it so it matched perfect and if they did notice it looked funky we can say its always looked funky

its harder to fix a hole in the wall than you think... at least to do it right. those "patch kits" suck, and arent worth a damn. you need to cut a piece of wall board into the hole, and screw it in with sheetrock screws and braces, then use sheetrock mud and tape, then sand and screen, then paint.

if the landlord sees that you've done a shitty patch kit, they will have someone come and cut out the patch and fix it right. and you'll probably get charged a lot more than if you just owned up to it in the first place.

so it will cost you at least as much anyhow as it would if you didnt try to fix it (if not more), and you will have also wasted time and money supplies.

tell the landlord, and they'll work with you.

Your landlord will charge something like 3 times what it would cost you to fix it yourself. My husband punched a hole in the wall of our last apartment and they charged us about 100 dollars to fix it.

^ thats about the going rate to have a hole in the wall fixed ... im not talking about some cheap ass $10 patch screen kit.

hooksaw's video http://www.ronhazelton.com/howto/patching_hole_video.htm is what I'm talking about. larger holes are a bit more work, needing heavier bracing and to be taped and mudded. the sanding and painting is the trickiest part to get right, because if you dont, the patch area will be very visible.

If you think you can do this, then go ahead, but im just here to say from experience its not as easy as it looks

....

Well. . .my husband and both of my brothers do. All three of them hit walls, throw things, or kick things.

They're the quiet ones that everyone always warns you about. Sweet, gentle guys, who never seem to get angry or let anything bother them. Well. . .they're pressure cookers. Never seen a single one of them hurt anyone or get into a fight with anything other than a wall or something equally harmless.

assuming it is in the center of the span from stud to stud, rather than near a stud, the repair can be done with a small piece of Sheetrock and quick repair clips. You will need 6-8 clips, assuming a hole no bigger than 12X12. You will need a small Sheetrock saw, and a box cutter with a fresh blade. Trim the piece of Sheetrock into a square that covers the hole with about 1/2 inch overlap on all sides. Now hold it over the hole and mark its outline on the wall. Try to keep it square tot he wall so that any seams are vertical or horizontal, not at some wacky ass angle running up the wall. Score along this line with the razor knife, then carefully cut the hole out with the saw. Mount the patch using the clips, then tape and mud the edges, after it dries sand and re mud as needed to give a smoothed surface before painting.
http://www.digatedesign.com/ has pictures of this repair method. I do repairs using screws and back of wall braces, however that is only needed for holes larger than 12X12. You can find all the materials you need at Lowes, just tell the guy in the paint section what you are doing and he can help. Take in a paint chip from the wall, he should be able to help you by mixing up matching paint.
