Project Pet Chow

We are collecting pet food and supplies for the Louisiana SPCA and the temporary shelter set up by the LSU vet school. More than 1000 animals have been rescued out of New Orleans alone. We have already collected over 1200 pounds of food. Help us help man's best friend.

Donation sites:
~K-Mart on Western Blvd and Blue Ridge Rd today,Sept.10th, from 11am-5pm.
~Food Lion on Gormon St and Avent Ferry Rd tomorrow, Sept.11th, from 2pm-7pm.

Supplies needed:
~bowls, food(cat/dog), towels, blankets, leashes, collars, litter, litter pans, and any other pet items

okay, what to do, what to do? Take the more than 100 pounds of dog and cat food in my car to Wake County Animal Shelter where the pets of evacuees are staying (as well as other deserving animals) OR stop at Kmart and send this load South? I know there are more animals in need in Louisana I remember 400+ at the Vet School during Floyd. But everyone says keep food local and send money over state lines. What do you all think I should do? Either way I help pooches and kitties. Still, I am leaning South.

i cannot for the life of me find the story right now. i read it this morning. but it said not to send food to that area. many of the pet food companies have sent food suplies and the rescues/shelters down there have all the food they need. it went on to say that instead food donations should be given to local rescues/shelters which are in need also.

other supplies were still needed to help with the animals down south and monetary donations were always needed. i'll try to find the story later but have been up for nearly 20 hours and have to sleep first

we're probably going to see an outpouring of support for out of state pets, but a decrease in local donations.

I heard purina chow was bogo this week at Harris Teeter and be willing to buy some.....I will be working during your collection and I don't know if I will make it by there. Is there someone's house I can drop it off at or I can have it on campus tomorrow.

Good points. I'll start with Wake County today at 1pm and see what I learn by going there. If they seem like they don't need it, I will bring it by. I too remember the mound of cat and dog food we had at the Vet school during Floyd so will try to concentrate my donations south on money or other supplies.

also its best to check with the groups that are actually working down there. bestfriends.org has lots of information and a list of other groups that are working. one of them has on their website that they are not taking food supplies as donations because of expiration problems with having food stacking up.

Animal rescue organizations in this area are taking-in animals from Katrina and keeping them up here. So, donate to your local organizations because they're going to need it for the influx of animals. But regardless, if you're helping animals where ever they may be, you're doing a good thing.

We've collected almost 3000 pounds of food thus far. Thanks to everyone that has donated. We are in contact with organizations in Louisiana to find out what they need. Please come out to the donation sites and pm me if you need to drop off food at another time. We are also taking monetary donations to aid in the transport of supplies to Louisiana. A portion of the food gathered will be donated to local shelters that have animals from Louisiana.

Wake County Animal Shelter took mine. They said they would soon be receiving Katrina animals- ones with no known owners-beginning the 20th.

"What if I want to donate animal food?

Animal food is extremely perishable in hot and damp weather -- which the
SPCA learned during the Floyd rescue efforts -- . Right now, monetary donations would
be the most help."

so maybe donating money directly to the SPCA here or in LSU is best or the litter and bowls and things of that nature.

but whatever you decide it is awesome to donate to any of these causes.
