Help Disease Research and Support the Wolfpack with your Computer
submitted by KRUZNBY on Thursday, October 16 2003 at 2:16 PM
A bunch of us fellow TWWers have joined together to donate our free computing time to a research project at Stanford University called Folding@Home. This project tries to understand how proteins fold in to complex 3-D structures.
Many diseases are related to the misfolding of proteins such as: Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. This project requires massive amounts of computing power, so in order to complete their tasks, they use free CPU time one your computer much like the Seti@Home project.
In addition to helping disease research, you can be a part of our NCSU Wolfpack team and compete against other teams as well as fellow TWWers. Their program uses only your wasted processor cycles, and will not interfere with other programs you have running. Just go to http://folding.stanford.edu/ and download the software. Once you install it enter team number "59" to join.
