North Carolina State University and the University Activities Board Issues and Ideas Committee are pleased to host activist leader Minister Benjamin Chavis Muhammad, former Director of the NAACP, for a campus discussion on “Racial Climate on College Campuses” on February 26, 2002.
Min. Chavis was national director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 1993-1994. Immediately following his term, he became the national director for the Million Man March taking place in Washington, DC in October of 1995.
The program will be held at Stewart Theatre on the North Carolina State University campus, Tuesday, February 26th, beginning at 7:30pm. Tickets are free for N.C. State students with a valid university ID and must be picked up in advance at the Ticket Central Box Office in the Talley Student Center. All non-N.C. State affiliated parties may purchase tickets from the Box Office for $15.

The only campus where this would not automatically be an issue would be one in which the entire student/faculty/staff population was all of one race. Everytime I think ive heard the dumbest comment from one of you ignorant jackasses, a new ass takes over the title.
he took the name Muhammad after joining the nation of islam. he was attempting to also remain a minister in the United Church of Christ, but they kicked him out....just like the NAACP fired him for using organizational money to keep someone quiet about his sexual harassment
I was trying to remain neutral...but .....whatever
The NAACP only tries to advanced "colored people" by making an issue about race and advocating Affirmative Action type programs. If a black man or woman works really hard to make something of themselves (such as Clarence Thomas), they basically denounce them as "selling out" and joining the white mans world. A man such as Ken Hamblin, a black conservative talk radio host, is a foe rather than an ally. They also waste their time with trivial issues like the Confederate Flag at the South Carolina state capital, rather than something much more important such as helping to educate lower class blacks. The NAACP = Just another political activist organization that really doesnt do anything to help anyone.
to find out about this "affirmative action" organization go to http://www.naacp.org
i see the NAACP specific programs *home ownership and business initiative *Armed service and veterans affairs *Health *Labor * Religous affairs * Voter empowerment
nothing on affirmative action
The NAACP gave Condoleeza Rice the 2002 image award and from what i remember she does not support affirmative action.

i wouldnt put too much stock in the image that an organization portrays itself on a webpage. i looked at hte KKKs webpage one time and it made them out to be a fine upstanding organization for the advancement of white people. there was no mention of racism or violence. but im not that naive about them and neither am i about the naacp. neither organzation wants equality. the kkk wants supremacy and the naacp wants a free ride.

I put the NAACP in about the same class as I put the KKK, a racist group of bigots with the main difference is that people admit they're in the NAACP whereas people in the KKK don't readily and openly admit it.
Ben Chavis is nothing but a selfish man who feeds off the frustration of people to gain their respect and admiration.
He was a man who preached so much about Christ and then left Christianity for Islam when he lost respect and power in the Christian Church. This man thinks he can do what he wants, when he wants and make false accusations without any valid or legit proof. I don't understand how anyone can trust this guy, but I am sure it will be interesting to see what he has to say.
As for the NAACP, its kinda unfair to compare them with the KKK, as stated by a previous person. Although I do not agree with some of its agenda at times, the NAACP has never killed anyone or ruined anyone's life, but has only been an annoyance at times.
that is true about the web stuff. That goes with any website. I just want a basis for the claims that it is an organization based on affirmative action. A lot of what is said is pure perception, just show me some actual quotes. I aint being sensitive, just want to make sure we give everything a chance before we knock it
i'm just calling the "racial climate" thing bullshit - hell, maybe i've never noticed it or something, but i don't really think about stuff like that. i like all the people
Cmon, dont you think if North Carolina decided that they were going to end all Affirmative Action practices in this state in regards to college acceptance, the NAACP would jump down our throats, calling all of those involved in the decision a bunch of white biggots?

I believe the NAACP (along with other groups such as the NOW gang) brought Anita Hill into the national spotlight with her bogus story about being sexual harrassed by Supreme Court Justice appointee (and known black conservative) Clarence Thomas. Although their intentions were to only keep him from becoming a Justice, the side effects of their efforts being successful would have ruined his career. Also, it shows us that the NAACP is not interested in the advancement of colored people...but only in the advancement of LIBERAL colored people.
I know Beardawg, that was my point....he is disliked by blacks because they consider him a "sell-out" because of his conservative views. What is a "bigot" anyhow? I know what it is supposed to mean, but these days it is just used to describe someone that doesnt agree with your political viewpoints (which is of course wrong). So if I dont agree with Billy Bobs political viewpoints, I can call him a bigot, isnt that right?
Wow- there are some pretty strong words here. But lets see who of you shows up tonight to share them when you're not so anonymous anymore! Afterall, there is a 30-minute question and answer session afterwards...
I'm interested to hear what Minister Chavis will have to say. I've never heard him speak before. If you come check it out you can form your own informed opinion, and take part in interesting conversation. It sounds intellectually stimulating to me, and I'm all about some learning and growth.
One more person come to talk to hear himself speak and try to stir up trouble... Y dont they stop talking so damn much and start doin something important in their lives. Like stop all the bad shit they're doin and start cleaning up their own act.
I'm the LAST person you will ever hear bashing the white race, but nchsref, you need to open your eyes. I have visited a few prisons on serveral occasions, and there are a whole shit load of whites that kill, rape and steal. If you think that blacks are the olny ones that commit crimes, you are a retard. I'm proud to be white, but people like you make me realize just how closed-minded our race can be sometimes.
TKE its a proven fact that BLACKS COMMITT MORE CRIMES THAN WHITES. No matter how much the hippies here want to dilute FBI statistics, they are just adding to the typical black argument that everything they do is the white mans fault.
When people make negative statements about an entire group of people and do not offer support of their claim, I think them ignorant of the topic and hateful of the people they are attacking.
When people make negative statements about an entire group of people and do not prove to me that every single member of the group is what they claim they are, I am not convinced and it was simply a waste of the arguer's time and effort.
nchsref - Would you like to prove that "proven fact"?
I would like to hear some comments from people who attended this lecture. Can anybody give any kind of informed commentary on Ben Chavis's visit instead of ignorant, racist babble?
I would assume that Ref is referring to the proportion of crimes committed by black people in relationship to their proportion of the total population of the US. I don't have the exact figures, but in that respect, I believe he is correct.
Does this statement not support everything i have ever said about minorities, always blaming whites for their inadequacies (here intelligence)
"As for the report card, if black attendance is down, then somebody needs to look at that. There was a time when black students couldn't attend N.C. State, and now that we can, attendance is low. What's sad is that this isn't the biggest problem; the problem is not admittance, but graduating. I am very disappointed that people deny these problems."
