So, this might be a n00bian message, but what really is the purpose of keeping track of the number of times a person has posted and displaying that number? I suppose it helps n00bs to identify TWW gods more easily, but really. Seems to me that if it weren't included, padding would be much less of a problem, since noone would know how many posts a user actually had. I can identify jackleg easily because I see him post a lot, so I don't really need a post count to let me know he posts a lot.

On the flip side, it is amusing to say "I've got xxx number of posts..."

I thought the main problem with padding is that it was annoyance and spacewasting habit in and of itself. Taking away the post count wouldn't affect this much, just cut out a few posters who do pad for the sake of getting a higher post count.

Maybe an option that would let you toggle the post count/status names on and off in your personal settings?

Post counts are promotional. Once a n00b sees someone with say 10k, 20k, or 30k posts they are inspired to get to the same level. Hence, a new member is added.
