Are you saying you are optimistic about our future, accounting for current circumstances, or simply starting that you are generally an optimist?

Fair. I really like space stuff. I'm just sorry that the face of the most successful company in that arena turned out to be so flawed. Is he trying to be the modern day Wernher von Braun? Collaborating with fascist officials to advance his scientific goals? I think it's more malign than that.

i am chronically ill.

a better place to start this thread might be to post some truths that arent going to change no matter what, for example, in 20 years there will be half as many chinese living as there are right now.

was just thinking certain data might change the direction of the thread

Gender is a construct though. This can’t be denied in that bargain. That’s the slippery slope that leads to homophobia that is fueling MAGA.

Maybe if you want to say gender is a construct, but we draw the lines based on sex.

And in any case, I don't think most MAGAs care all that much about run-of-the-mill homosexuals.

There shouldn’t be any hard lines is the problem, that thinking is incompatible with American ideals of freedom. Heteronormative Principles and guidelines make sense, I doubt most lgbtq people would disagree with that, but saying functionally the extremely rare transgender person can’t exist openly is anti-American. The federal government doesn’t need to have an opinion on every weird subculture, but it should protect Americans’ right to be weird as long as you’re not infringing on anyone else. This is how most people saw things through the 90s. The T has been part of LGBT for a long time. GOP are the ones who whipped people into a frenzy about them with bathroom bills.

I want a 2050 closer to 5th Element than Brave New World. Keep America weird

This is the bargaining stage of grief for what we are about to lose.

If…..if ……if Dems just capitulated on this one issue (Trans rights) then MAGA would’ve moderated and we could’ve hashed out some kind of deal that moved the country forward ………

MAGA is an Authoritarian movement in search of grievance to justify its power grabs. If it’s not Trans people it’ll be something else, whatever is convenient.

The next stages of grief are depression and acceptance, btw.

Trump picked off any group that had a grievance with the left and made a ton of alliances across lines that were not typically conservative. The left was excommunicating yoga moms with vaccine doubts, people uneasy about trans stuff, and silicon valley tech bros.

You can make alliances or fight and force it.

And I’m convinced that a large portions of those groups, even if you eliminated all their concerns on each of those issues, would have found and clung to some other grievance to justify their slide to Authoritarianism.

^^ it’s more the big anti tech regulations. Big case of biting the hand that feeds you. Also the AI regulations that favored big players over upstarts.

The Covid thing was only Elon. Being in California myself at the time, most tech people were very afraid of Covid and supported the most draconian measures.

This is all the democrats have been trying to do. It doesn’t work when you don’t have a misinformation monster like Fox News behind you.

Obama ran on strong borders but gentle enforcement for people who’ve been here (exactly what most people want and what bill maher just asked for), they bend over backwards for the economic interests of farmers, they went mad with education programs for displaced coal workers, their approach to the fentanyl crisis was treatment not enforcement, healthcare policy was perversely biased towards elderly, Kamala was all about housing affordability which was a huge issue for independents. But trans women in sports dominated all of this, and 99.999% of people have never watched a sporting event organically that had a transgender person in it (that might be the actual percentage too).

I kind of agreed with Obama's plans prior to about 2016. My views on it shifted. Retraining everyone to code isn't realistic (kind of the vibe of that time). As we are seeing now tech can be hype, and it's cyclical. So now all those people rushing for the gold mine of coding are unable to find jobs. In addition, you're not going to get a 100 average iq Joe to learn to code. Some people can't even use a multi-function remote and don't have the mental capacity to learn.

You have to acknowledge that and if you don't you're just naturally keeping out a large segment of the population from the ivy tower.

I moved to California in 2011. I spent a ton of time in all the west coast cities: San Diego, San Francisco, LA (where I lived most of the time), Portland and Seattle. In 2011 San Francisco you'd see people shooting up in the street with puke all over them even in some of the tourist areas. In LA it was mostly downtown and definitely not in a residential area. By the time I moved out of LA in 2020 you saw it basically everywhere except the super high-end ($5mil plus) level homes. Our Post Office was overrun with addicts, you couldn't drop off a letter without getting yelled at. The postal workers routinely were getting assaulted. LA County spent something like $5 billion on programs to help and the problem had gotten 40% worse.

I saw similar things in Seattle and Portland. Literally no one living there could take any of what a standard left democrat did on drug policy seriously. When people complained they just got more grift for housing no one uses and more ideas like cashless bail to let them start shitting on the street more quickly after one is locked up.

There are like two politicians seriously talking about this and it certainly isn't Kamala. Trump turned on the money printer in 2020 with covid to the max and Biden continued it along with those huge bills (which Trump also just did). Elon retweeted Ron Paul leading up to the election a bit and DOGE was supposed to help. I really expected more there, but basically it's business as usual. I don't see any realistic solution to this that isn't egregiously painful to everyone instead of what we have now with moderate pain to the middle class while rich people have more valuable assets.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_%26_Experimentation_Tax_Credit

Another good one that influenced the split. Made R&D tax credits go away.

"The motivation for this move against LGBT rights seems to have been to take the issue off the table for voters. Morgan McSweeney, the Starmer aide most associated with the government’s political strategy, operates on classic reactionary centrist logic: we need to meet the public where it’s at and understand the concerns of defectors to Reform (while aggressively ignoring the concerns of the, much more numerous, defectors to the Lib Dems or Greens).

To put it mildly, this has not worked. The theory was that feeding the wolf would starve it. But, somehow, the beast is stronger than ever. Reactionary centrists simply cannot account for this outcome. All they can think to do is keep throwing more meat."
