Almost one month until defending World Cup champs Argentina kick off Copa America against Canada in Atlanta. How deep can the USMNT go in this tourney in front of home crowds with the South American giants involved? A top two finish in the group stage looks probable. Reaching the final, however, won't be easy unless Brazil and Argentina land on the other side of the knockout bracket. The Dest injury concerns me. That position is not full of proven depth and GGG is not very willing to try newer unproven players. GK is also a concern with Turner not playing at all for Forest. The Panama match will be pivotal.
5/16/2024 12:48:10 PM
Ready for this to start. Is our realistic goal getting out of the group stage, like World Cups?
5/18/2024 10:13:28 AM
I'd say semis is more realistic this time because we're the host and there are fewer elite teams than in a WC. No France, Spain, Italy, Germany, etc.
5/18/2024 6:43:20 PM
Berhalter has named his roster for the Copa America warm-ups against Colombia and Brazil. Any noteworthy absences?
5/22/2024 3:40:53 PM
Well considering GGG's love of MLS players Walker Zimmerman would probably be the most notable, but minus the players that are injured it looks pretty on par.

Glad I missed today's game. 1-5 vs Colombia!? Not a good omen.

Matt Turner and the CB's were awful today. Not sure how much longer you can keep Turner as your number 1. Its clear his confidence is gone.

Really, Tim Weah? Only Zlatan can get away with stuff like that.
6/27/2024 7:44:52 PM
WTF Weah, such a jackass move
6/27/2024 8:48:05 PM
Insane lack of discipline. How were there only 4 min added on at the end?? That penalty var review was 4 min alone[Edited on June 27, 2024 at 9:20 PM. Reason : R]

On the one hand this summer so far has been pretty uninspiring for probably one of the most talented generations of USMNT players. On the other hand if we crash out US Soccer will face intense pressure to make a change at head coach, to avoid a second embarassment at the World Cup that we are hosting as well. Weah probably should face some time away from the starting XI after that idiocy last night. 4 Minutes of stoppage time was a farce and the lack of a booking on the Panamanian player that knew what he was doing in his collision that injured Turner.
6/28/2024 9:41:36 AM
Yea that ref in general didn't seem like he had control of the game
6/28/2024 9:49:20 AM
Pretty sure he reffed the US-Mexico Nations League game last year in which 4 players were shown red. He loses control quite regularly.
6/28/2024 10:31:47 AM
Ref was terrible (should have been a penalty for pulisic and a yellow shown on the gk collision at absolute minimum), but this was the same uninspiring play from the US since Greggggggg has been back. It can be both true that Tim Weah absolutely fucked us with that stupid ass punch, but also true that we still should have beaten Panama down a man when we get an absolute banger of a goal from Balogun in transition. Gregg is fuckin terrible man. We are down a man and not only does this dimwit decide to bunker against freakin Panama, but he takes out our best transition striker to put in Pepi at the same time. So either attempt to play them straight up down a man and put in Pepi (I'd still argue for Balo) OR bunker and play for the counter attack with Balo. You definitely don't do both. The only silver lining for this terrible loss was that it may be the thing (because we are definitely getting grouped after it) that causes Gregg to get the boot prior to the most important WC for the USMNT ever.
6/28/2024 3:26:41 PM
Weah should be benched for 5 games for such a stupid move.
6/29/2024 7:05:01 AM
Down goes Mexico
6/30/2024 10:03:00 PM
Mexico has enough longterm pedigree to control the game (and they did), but they have no players who can create something in the final third. They don't have anyone that can dominate physically (via speed or physicality). Honestly, watching how absolutely mid Mexico is right now from a talent standpoint pisses me off that we are about to be in the same place as them in this tournament AND our wins against them are really the only thing that anyone could point to in order to defend Gregg's record.

Has anyone else felt fox coverage had been terrible as well? Only one terrible replay on that early challenge on Reyna? What an absolute disgrace by the referee and CONMEBOL. Atrocious
7/1/2024 10:52:45 PM
That first half sequence where he allowed Uruguay to go quickly when displaying the yellow card should disqualify him from any high level matches
7/1/2024 10:55:36 PM
That was def the worstThe no continuation, adams yellow standout as well. I guess the var isn't directly on him.US didn't do enough but this org should be embarrassed[Edited on July 1, 2024 at 11:00 PM. Reason : The stoppage time ]
7/1/2024 10:58:34 PM
As usual the USA has next to no offense. Don’t even feel we got close to scoring.
7/1/2024 11:12:54 PM
If Berhalter isn't sacked after this tournament performance (and he probably won't be), then we simply aren't even attempting to be a serious footballing nation. It's a shame. We can't get out of a group with Panama and Bolivia. I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise since we barely qualified for the WC on GD after tying for third in CONCACAF. To watch our obviously talented, but probably overrated players not be put in positions to succeed again and again is infuriating. I want to spread the love a bit, though. Weston came into camp overweight, Weah had one of the most boneheaded red cards I have seen since Dest in the Nation's league. Turner cannot be our GK for the WC... he is still awful with his feet and has become an average ball stopper since his move to the PL and being out of form.
7/2/2024 8:54:43 AM
And I thought the officiating in UEFA was bad. What is the point of VAR if you are gonna ignore it? USA absolutely robbed.
7/2/2024 10:03:44 AM
Yeah, terrible call.... among a ton of others. Didn't matter. A draw wasn't going to put us through. We didn't really even have any close chances to score.
7/2/2024 10:18:14 AM
Yea, us not getting close to the other net, that's all that matters. We are absolutely awful on the offensive side of the ball.
7/2/2024 10:20:03 AM
I agree that the offense has to be better. We had two great chances with the ball in the box and the goalie out of position where we didn't capitalize. But there were also plenty of calls, non-calls, and no cards that hurt our offense too. I remember multiple fouls in our attacking 1/3 that should have been yellows that were either not called or not carded. Balogun being pulled down by the neck of his jersey is the first one that comes to mind. It seemed like every chance we had in the first half Uruguay would pull us down when they were beat and they got away with it. If the ref had been giving out yellows, maybe the game goes a little differently.
7/2/2024 1:55:12 PM
Did the ref face any repercussions after that shit-show?
7/3/2024 10:02:31 AM
^They never face any repercussions. The governing body always just shrugs their shoulders, says "lol sorry" then it happens again next week. That is probably the biggest reason why it happens so often. Maybe if the refs started getting fines or something, they'd think twice before making such bad calls.
7/3/2024 10:09:23 AM
Well that sucks. I admittedly don't watch a lot of soccer, mainly just a lot during the Copa/Euro/World Cup, but that was definitely egregious. Obvious offsides, but the worst was that yellow-card/play-on. I can't see how he wasn't reprimanded for that.Oh, and the hand-ball, waiting to see if there was advantage, and then stopping play after obvious advantage.[Edited on July 3, 2024 at 10:27 AM. 7/3/2024 10:20:31 AM
Rondon goal is wild
7/5/2024 10:43:39 PM
Yesterdays euro and copa basically led me to think international knockout round soccer is just a bad product. Teams already don't have enough time together to develop real chemistry or practice unique tactics, then if the game is tied late in a knockout round the coaches seem to get super conservative, presumably bc if they lose in open play the figure they'll get the blame whereas if it goes to penalties the players get the blame.
7/7/2024 11:57:53 AM
I've watched more copa than euro, but it seems the physicality that is being allowed is definitely making the game uglier and more to blame for the bad product. That's pretty typical for CONMEBOL, but it is out of control this year. It's actually stunning that more players aren't out injured. The Germany/Spain game had that feel as well--although cards were being handed out like candy. I tend to think of the difference between international/top leagues as similar to the difference between NBA and college in basketball. In the international game, you have watered down talent, perhaps a heightened atmosphere which creates more defensive urgency, and less sophisticated tactics.[Edited on July 8, 2024 at 9:54 AM. Reason : d]
7/8/2024 9:53:59 AM
Exceptional players like Foden and Ronaldo look average at the Euros. Is it the lack of team chemistry or the more aggressive defense?
7/9/2024 9:43:52 AM
Can't tell if joking
7/9/2024 9:53:58 AM
I’ve been a casual watcher of Copa and Euro so take this with a grain of salt. The level of skill isn’t close, the European countries are way more skilled than the Copa countriesThe fans in the US/Copa are sad compared to the German/Euro fan base. Every Copa game I’ve seen before the semis has half empty crowds. The Euro stadiums have been deafening since the group stagesSoccer players flop around the world but no one flops like the Copa countriesAll in, I’m bored watching the Copa tourney. The Euros are where it’s at without question[Edited on July 9, 2024 at 9:34 PM. Reason : Fgh]
