I have an appointment with my therapist this afternoon to go through my reasonable accommodation paperwork. My team has been successfully working remotely full time for four years, yet now the company is pushing this return-to-office bullshit on us. Our office has neither mask nor vaccination requirements and has made no improvements to air circulation. I'll be damned.

Thankfully I was hired as a remote employee. I don't have an office to go to even if they mandated in-office work.

At this point I don't know how my family's schedule would function if I had to go into the office.

The third leading cause of death in the United States is an airborne, contagious disease. Even if you survive it, even if you are vaccinated, there is at least a 10% chance you will develop long-term symptoms that can be physically and mentally debilitating.

We are right now, today, experiencing a record surge in infections. My company has abandoned mask & vaccination requirements and has made no improvements to air circulation in our offices. They are now mandating at least one day per week be spent in the office with make-up days required if you miss coming in one week.

I'll be goddamned if I comply and put myself at risk of contracting that fucking disease when I and most of my co-workers have been successfully working fully remotely for four years. There is no advantage. Half the people I work with are on other continents. Most of my time is spent working alone or on Teams calls anyway. The vague advantages of "collaboration" and "team building" the executives allude to are smokescreens for a much more cynical business decision.

No company deserves to bet anyone's health like that.

You're confusing me cause you're phrasing this as if your company is the abnormal one here, while in a return to normal seems to be the standard nationwide (of course some things have permanently changed in how we operate, but that's something else).

Like if you were just making the case based on you don't need to be in person for your type of work (online meetings, other continents, etc.), but the health aspect?

Unless the air circulation issue they have is especially extreme, I still feel like I'm missing something here.

I'm not going to pretend that I know the appropriate public health response at this point. But people who don't need to congregate shouldn't be congregating, and that includes people whose work can be done remotely.

My sister-in-law caught COVID over Christmas because she went to a family gathering. There was a rash of infections at work earlier this month because some folks went to a conference where someone else who'd been exposed attended without testing. Just 100% avoidable shit, and what are we doing? Oh, no, you don't have to wear a mask. Oh, yes, you really need to return to the office.

Anyway, no, I don't have kids. I don't think kids should be in school. Kids are little asymptomatic vectors who hug sick people then bring that shit home without telling you. If you have a kid and you send that kid to school, yeah, you're basically fucked. That doesn't mean I have to be around your ass, too. Stay home. I'll stay home, too, and we'll starve the fuckin' disease out a little more.

My brother has two kids. When their school was still doing remote classes, I told him he ought to pull them out if the school went back to requiring attendance, because they'd be better off missing a year or two of school than fucking themselves and/or their parents up with a potentially lifelong cognitive hit from long COVID.

I know, easy for me to say. But I still ain't caught that shit and ain't about to. It's taken hard choices to stay safe, and I haven't gone through that just for some fucking executive to fuck that up for me because he's worried the company will lose a tax break if they don't have enough people reporting to offices.
