According to the reddits, he has always wanted to name a company of his "X". He apparently tried with PayPal, but was told by some smarter people not to do it. He spent $44,000,000,000 on Twitter so he could do what he wants with it and call it X.

^^ That's not exactly right. One of the first companies he founded was X.com. It merged with another company or two and eventually became PayPal.

Somewhere in that series of events, he was the CEO of the whole thing, but then got ousted. Then PayPal got acquired by eBay, which was surely a huge windfall for investors (and Elon Musk--I think that exit is what launched him into stratosphere wealth), but I suspect not the grand vision he originally founded X to be.

How much of this is following up and attempting to see through his original vision, and how much of it is sticking his finger in the eye of the people and industry and powers and institutions who thwarted him, I don't know, but I think a good bit of it is, broadly speaking, about settling old scores.
