So Travis Hunter seems incredibly legit. But how sustainable is it to keep playing both sides of the ball? 100+ snaps in a game!

^^ 30? I’ve seen this:

Quote :
" how the new clock rules have impacted the games so far this college football season:

2022:
•plays per game: 131
•drives per game: 24.0
•plays per drive: 5.50

2023:
•plays per game: 117
•drives per game: 21.7
•plays per drive: 5.40"

@tejfbanalytics (no clue who he is or if he knows anything).

But I’ve seen all kinds of numbers thrown around on Twitter but this tweet is about the only one I’ve seen that actually had real numbers. Others were just estimates and/or based on a couple of teams and games.

14 plays per game based on this. They estimated in the off-season that it would be 6-7 plays. But yea the commercials are a major issue.

Quote :
"Doeren pointed out that there are 15 fewer plays per game due to the NCAA's pace of play rule change.

He said there were still 16 TV timeouts.

"I think it's sad.""

Longer quote:
Quote :
"Dave Doeren is not a fan of the new clock rules.

"We had four TV timeouts per quarter; 16 television timeouts in our game. We're going to be excited about that and take football out of the game. I think it's sad that's what's happened, but it's the way it goes." "

Less plays per game, Imo, isn’t a huge problem. 4+ hours games is the real problem. The clock rules will help game time, but the TV timeouts are the main issue.

Lesser teams will be able to use the clock rules to their advantage to keep games close and increase upset odds. Sorta like in the nfl how almost every game is a 1 possession game in the 4th Q.

But the commercial breaks is what’s infuriating. As a television product, it is hard to watch. I’m tuning into State games no matter what, so I’ll put up with commercials. But when watching a game as a neutral observer, it fucking sucks. NFL is much better at keeping things a tidy 3 hours.

I was about to say as a casual fan, nfl commercials helped turn me off. The worst example in the NFL is the commercial-kickoff-commercial sequence they would do. Not even a real play to speak of bw commercials.

I don’t know the breakdown of NFL commercials vs College. But nfl feels better as a viewer although I could be wrong. But maybe it’s just the length of games and tidiness of it all. 1 pm games end. 4 pm games start. Like clock work pretty much every week. College is all over the place with games at 11, 12, 12:30, 2, 3:30. 6, 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8, etc. So games all end at different points during the day, not flowing as smoothly into the next game. Obviously some of that is quantity of games and channels. Much easier to keep a tight schedule when there’s fewer total games each week.

[Edited on September 4, 2023 at 2:18 PM. Reason : Style of play matters a great deal too, and there’s more variance in style in college ]

I mean NFL games are close because the talent level is much more equal across teams in the NFL. Has nothing to do with timeouts or game length and everything to do with a salary cap and a draft

Yes.

The clock rules also limit possessions (compared to college games) which keeps games closer. I’m not saying clock rules are the primary reason for close nfl games. But it is one factor that contributes.

Fuck Clemson though, lol. ^ why should he have gone to the nfl? He makes $10M+…that’s probably more than he’d make in the nfl.

Rhule’s salary was $8.5M. Dabo’s currently getting more than that. Dudes like Sean Payton and Belichick get paid way more obviously. I don’t like Clemson and Dabo is annoying as hell. I get that NFL coaches don’t have to recruit. But it’s not like he would’ve gotten a giant raise to go to the NFL.

From a quick Google search Rhule’s buyout was like $40M and Dabo’s current buyout is over $60M.

He has more job security at Clemson than he would in the NFL and the money doesn’t seem way different.

I guess I’m just an asshole and nitpicking but to say “he should’ve gone to the NFL when he had the chance” makes it sound like Clemson is about to fire him. Which doesn’t really seem to be the case. I dunno. I found it to be an odd statement.

Quality clock management by App at the end of regulation. Save your opponent 20s by kicking your FG quickly, then call TO after sacking their QB on the first play of the ensuing drive.

So it’s actually more like 2 plays per game. Game length is mostly unchanged but we’ve also had weather delays which do get counted so that number might drop as the season goes on and weather delays are less frequent. So basically there’s no real difference.
