Did a quick search to try to find ther users with Top Gun names, and couldn't find any. No Goose, No Ice Man, no Viper or Slider, no Jester. Closest I could find was wolfmantaxi

Important question:

Does this film feature or at least give a strong nostalgic nod to the song Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins?

It gives a lot of strong nostalgic nods to many iconic parts of the original movie, including Danger Zone.

was talking to someone yesterday who told me the theater erupted in applause when Danger Zone started (I also saw that soon after the original one came-out, military recruiment increased by 300%)

In 2004, I was in a [Top Gun] CS: Source clan. I was [Top Gun] Maverick and my roommate was [Top Gun] Iceman. That was the entire clan.

Anyway, I saw the movie on Saturday and liked it a bit but had to explain some stuff to my wife who wasn't quite up to speed with all the lore from the first movie. She was really annoyed at how

Is there value in seeing it in the theater vs waiting till it hits streaming?

I'm behind, I need to take the kid to see Dr. Strange, and then this one. But shit, it's hard to find the time.

The obvious answer is yes. This is exactly the type of movie you want to see with a ridiculous sound system and giant screen.

Hell I saw it at a theater that had moving seats (first time I've done that).

Yep. It was the first movie I have seen in a theater since the pandemic, and it was well worth the theater experience.

They actually had Navy recruitment booths in cinemas when the first one came out, knowing full well that maybe 1% of the people that they got to sign up would actually end up seeing the cockpit of a Navy aircraft lol. In general, the military/government is VERY willing to work with Hollywood when it comes to any movie that presents the military in a positive light (even the bad movies). In this case, the movie studio only had to pay for the fuel for the planes -- the Navy provided the actual aircraft, flight crew, pilots, etc. free of charge. To them it gave lots of additional experience to their crew.

I work for NASA and we actually have a group who's sole purpose is to advise movie/TV studios. I can't remember which Transformers movie it was, but one of them had a bunch of stuff of space stuff including the moon landing and whatever. They had a bunch of stuff set up down at KSC and NASA employees were allowed to go up and check out the transformers models between shoots and stuff.

Finally got to see this with the family on Tuesday. I'm a huge aviation nerd and have watched the original Top Gun countless times (mostly the Rifftrax version though). Maverick was an amazing movie and in my opinion topped the original by a good bit. And as others stated, this movie is DEFINITELY a movie to watch at the theaters with a great sound system.

I didn't realize it until someone else pointed it out, but the final mission in the movie was almost exactly the Star Wars Ep 4 trench run if it used real aircraft and pilots.

^^^ Pretty sure that was flown on the VR-1350 and/or VR-1355 low level training routes, up near Whidbey Island. If so, I flew them a number of times. Widely considered as strong contenders for the best low level routes around.

I doubt it's anywhere near 1%.

I finally got around to seeing this in IMAX over the weekend with my daughter. I was out of the country when it came out, and then I couldn't make it to any of the IMAX times during the week I was home...then I was gone for 2 weeks living in a tent on a USMC exercise...then we finally found an IMAX showing we could make.

^Or F-117s. No way that an USAF aircraft would be out of range with mid-air refueling.

He did say something about F-35s being unavailable for whatever reason.

I think there was a throwaway line about GPS jamming preventing F-35s, but yeah, the Air Force could have easily handled that mission or just sent a couple cruise missiles that use internal navigation or TV.

Still a great movie though.

"The movie’s thesis, as much as there is one, is that despite the fashionable prevalence of smart bombs and drones, there’s no substitute in a crisis for an insanely talented fighter pilot steering 30 tons of metal at hypersonic speed into a frightful zone of danger, dropping his bombs dead on target, and whooshing up and away at G-forces intense enough to rip the flesh off the face of mere mortals."

"Everybody thinks that nobody can do this until Maverick demonstrates that he can, and then, through some form of inspirational osmosis, all of his teammates can do it too."

Those are mothballed. (Sort of...they are kept in a state of higher readiness, flown from time to time by contractors instead of just sitting out in the desert).

I took that to mean that the strike required an LGB instead of a JDAM due to the JDAM's GPS guidance, and a single-pilot F-35 would have a difficult time lasing in those mission parameters (plus I don't know if it can laser designate without carrying an external pod, giving up the stealth capability).

Of course, JDAM has an INS-only mode to cope with GPS jamming/spoofing, although I expect it's not quite as accurate.

GPS jamming and spoofing is pretty easy, by the way. Any halfway competent middle-tier or better military can do it.

I'm not saying this was realistic and how such a strike would go...just trying to give my take on the reasoning behind that GPS jamming line.

[Edited on July 9, 2022 at 9:16 PM. Reason : those SAMs were SA-3s, BTW. Oh, and the only country with Tomcats is Iran.]

[Edited on July 9, 2022 at 9:16 PM. Reason : also, difficult access into nuclear sites is a core JSOC mission]

F-117s are being flown more regularly than you think.

Also, laser JDAMs exist, they have dual capability for GAINS and Laser navigation.

Right, I’m just saying I think that’s what the line about GPS jamming and F-35s was supposed to be about. Regardless, you’d be dropping it as an LGB if GPS was denied and INS wasn’t sufficiently accurate (which I kinda doubt).

I’m aware the -117s are flying, kept in a sort of near-ready-to-go state of preservation. I’ve heard they’re also maybe being used some for training and test/eval when they want a stealthy target. I’m not aware of them being used in any operational capacity.

I read where the choice for F-18's over F-35's was practical...the F-35's are only single-seat fighters. They needed someone to fly the plane as well as have the actor in the cockpit.

Saw it today. Thought it was phenominal.

oh yeah, that's a given. 100%. there are no 2-seat F-35s, and Tom Cruise wanted a LOT of actual live-action aviation footage.

That's the thing. Yes, there were lots of logistical fallacies that were just unrealistic. But at the end of the day, it was a very fun/exciting movie about combat aviation and I still loved it.

Duke, thanks for weighing in with actual military air power knowledge. My knowledge of aviation stops at C172s, engineering, and talks with old timer retired guys at my local flying club .

That being said -- for you military folks -- would an actual air strike really be the best option for taking this thing out given the risk of the mission failing? Would some kind of special forces/ground based demolitions team be the less risky method?
