I live near downtown Raleigh but maybe I want to buy some property and I definitely don't want to spend the dumbass amounts of money houses are going for right now.

What's it like living in some jerkwater suburb?

Suburbs aren't bad, there are usually grocery stores and the like within a 10-15 minute drive. But I associate the sticks with being more remote than that.

The suburbs is not the sticks, so please clarify your question.

I live about 3 miles from a town of about 4,000. I live off a gravel road, about 3/8 mile off a 2-lane highway. I wouldn't really call it the sticks, but it's just my house and mom's on about 4 acres in the woods.

Pros: No HOA, good wooded privacy, feels safe, no loud neighbors, can keep junk on my property without complaints

Cons: Internet sucks!!! (satellite or a hot-spot are current offerings), no neighbors to randomly grill out with, upkeep of a yard and landscaping within the woods is a pain, driving in or around a big city is torture compared to the freedom of travel very close to home, building costs are ridiculous so you might find yourself spending dumbass amounts of money to get what you want

I grew up in the sticks - like, the real sticks, not a suburb. At the time I hated it. The older I get, the more appealing it seems.

Now I live in a suburb of DC. Older, build in the 1950s, so less of the shitty modern construction, which I like. Has more character. And I'm fortunate enough to live in one with no HOA or anything like that, so I've got a pretty free hand to do what I want, within reason. The main tradeoff is that I don't have that instant access to a wide variety of restaurants, stores, etc. There's plenty within walking distance of me, but nothing like it was downtown. Of course, when I bought the house (February 2020), I figured I'd get plenty of exposure to city stuff going into work every day. That hasn't worked out yet, but sooner or later I'm gonna have to start going back to the office.

If you do your research and know what you want, living in the sticks can be great, and living in the burbs can be pretty good. But if you just move to a massive clear-cut subdivision that's a thirty minute drive from anything, you're gonna have a bad time.

If you're somewhat self sufficient, it's awesome!

I live in fuquay with pretty much all of the pros of arhodes and pretty much none of the cons.. We have 5 chickens, a cat, a dog, .87 acres, neighbors are close enough I could talk to but I don't want to.. Of course you can't really find this anymore.. Maybe further towards Angier..

it sucks unless you're within 25 miles of a densely populated area (an area which doesn't suck, mind you)

eastern NC is like the worst

I want to die every day LOL

but I'm too lazy to change my location so

If your attitude begins with "jerkwater suburb" then I suggest staying put. You won't be happy here.

No such thing. There is only "currently online?: yes" or "currently online?: no"
