Is there any particular reason other than preference that you use the transliteration "Chanukah"? Always been curious about that kind of thing but never asked.

^^I used to do Hanukkah because it's what I grew up seeing, but switched to Chanukah when I became more fluent in Hebrew and better versed in transliteration.H is inaccurate because it's a guttural sound, but it isn't like the Greek X (chi) either. Kh might be more accurate but English speakers still wouldn't get it right (would likely pronounce it like Khan). No double consonants because each is only the beginning of the syllable. Think of it like the word "rolling." It's rol-ling, not rol-ing or ro-ling. The double letter is pronounced twice. So it's Cha-nu-kah. Not Chan-nuk-kah.K and not q. K implies the Hebrew letter caf (?) while q would be used for a kuf (?) (This is why kabbalah is sometimes spelled with a q)And ending with an H, because the final letter is hey (?) like in Hannah and Sarah.[Edited on December 10, 2020 at 4:54 PM. Reason : -]

When does the center candle get lit?

Happy Chanukah from the gentiles. May your 8 days be wonderful and filled with all the golden riches that you all so hoard and desire. And thank you for creating my religion and giving me Jesus too. I love all you Jews.

^^You light the center one first, then use it to light the others. It's not always the center, but it is always the tallest. One candle is added each night from right to left, and you light the newest candle first.^ Night 4:

That reply doesn't make any sense going by the carets, so I can only assume that some shitbird I have blocked posted something anti-Semitic.

But I meant does the center one get lit on Night 1, or Night 0 (AKA Hanukkah Eve)? One of the menorahs posted does not contain a center / 9th (0th? candle).

^The first night you light the middle one and then use the middle one to light one other candle. In the picture I have for night one that's what is actively happening (the person is holding the middle candle).Catching up for night 5:And for tonight, night 6:

OIC. Thank you. Last menorah question. On the night one picture, where does the candle the person is holding go after lighting, as I'm only seeing 8 holders?
12/18/2020 7:42:45 AM
That's a good catch, I don't know!Edit: I asked around. There is a candle holder on the bottom left of the tray. The shamash (the candle that lights the other candles) can be below all the others. Although it usually is higher, it just has to be different enough in any direction to distinguish it.Another edit: It's not a kosher menorah. For it to be "official" the candles have to be in a straight line at the same level except for the shamash. But a lot of these special shapes exist and people usually don't mind unless they are super traditional.[Edited on December 18, 2020 at 11:46 AM. Reason : -]

How long does it burn each night, and regardless, wouldn't this result in the candles from the earlier nights getting progressively shorter than the latter nights? Are they not pictured that way because it is not considered as photographically pleasing?
12/18/2020 1:19:28 PM
You let them burn until they go out. The candles I use are gone within an hour so I don't have to worry about fire safety. You never blow them out. If you don't clean them out each day then there will be small remnants of the previous candles left behind, but usually not enough to drastically effect the height.

So counting the shamash, it takes you 44 candles to get through each year?8 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 ?I had no idea!
12/18/2020 3:14:21 PM
Yep, every box of Chanukah candles comes with exactly 44.(And it would go 2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)[Edited on December 18, 2020 at 9:21 PM. Reason : -]

Thanks. Same result. I counted the shamash and the Night 1 candle 8 times each, and the Night 8 candle once. May not have been the most logical progression.Shoulda been a candle maker. You've taught me a lot. Thanks!]
