If the Wonder Years was made today with the same time-gap, it would take place in 2000.

So I watched this today and for about 10 minutes into the show I was because the pilot felt like they were trying way too hard to make the point that this family was black. I was concerned it was going to be a Tyler Perry's presents The Wonder Years. But as the ep went on it had more of the previous Wonder Years feel and found its stride. I'm optimistic about this series because, while the original TWY was good, it really overlooked much of the social change that took place over the years it covers. The reboot hits that head on and addresses some of the more general experiences of being a middle class minority in America, with quotes like "Feel out of place wherever I go" and one liners about people saying you're acting white because you bring a lunchbox to school.I doubt it'll last because it's as good as the original but requires some niche experiences that much of America won't have to carry it through.

I enjoyed the first episode, definitely had some feels, will keep watching (it's sure to upset a lot of people because it definitely highlighted that they were black and had misgivings about white people and cops)

It will last if production costs aren't too high. ABC tends to let shows with low costs survive and build an audience before pulling plug as long as it doesn't drag down established shows ratings. See Speechless for proof of this as that show lasted 3 seasons before getting canceled. Its getting good reviews and will have a potential built in audience from the original. Plus the Goldbergs lead in may help it get established.
