Swept JMU in the season-opening series: 4-0, 9-6, 11-2.

Some things I thought were interesting:

**3B Devonte Brown was 7 for 12 (.583) with 3 doubles, 2 walks, and 5 RBI's. Maybe he's the breakout star this year.

**RF Jonny Butler was 7 for 13 (.538) with a HR and 6 RBI's. I think he was our leadoff man last year but batted 5th this game

**Pitching wise, Nick Swinney was the Friday starter and absolutely dominated -- 7 innings, 11 Ks, 2 hits, 0 runs

**Last year's ace, Reid Johnston, didn't start a game, but they used him as a mop-up man in the last game. I don't follow baseball enough to know if he was hurt in the offseason or what. Just thought it was interesting

I was at the 2nd game against JMU, we were down til the 8th inning. Going in to the bottom of the 8th we were down 2 and then just went on a tear.

We obliterated UNCW 11-0 in the weekday game earlier this week to stay undefeated.

Devonte Brown with a 3-run HR to break it open in the 1st inning. He now has 4 homers and is batting .448 on the season (8 games)

2B Tyler McDonough was 3-4 with 3 RBIs. He's batting .419 on the season


Big series coming up this weekend with Big 10 teams (Iowa, Purdue, Minn) in the Vikings stadium

He has done a good job here. We put little into baseball compared to FSU, Louisville, UNC, Clemson, etc. but is some of that because of him? I really do not know.

But year 24 and no ACC titles. We haven't even won the Atlantic under him in 14 years of the divisions. One CWS run and three more Supers. Again pretty good, but not oh shit sign a lifetime deal good.

Rumor is he is retiring after this year anyway.

Big stretch of games coming up. Iowa (3-3), Purdue (6-1) & Minnesota (4-4) in some tournament at the Minnesota Vikings football field. I dont know much about these teams but northern teams usually aren't as good early in the season due to temps.

Then we host an always tough Coastal Carolina (4-3) before traveling to 6-3 Virginia for a 3 game series. Neither Virginia nor Coastal are ranked this year but are both traditionally very good. We will know a lot more about our team after these 7 games than the ones so far IMO.

Played Minnesota tonight and were down early 5-2 and then we fought back to make it 6-5 (a bases clearing triple from Jonny Butler). Then in the 8th, we finally tied it up at 7 due to McDonough scoring on a wild pitch.

Then they intentionally walk us to load the bases and a freshman DH comes up and knocks in 2 runs for us on a LF single to make it 9-7. After Tyler McDonough turns a crucial double play to end the 8th, he comes up BIG with a 2-run HR.

State wins to go 11-0 and wins the tournament. Great comeback victory!!!!

Big midweek home game against Coastal Carolina today. Some quick updates:

*We're up to to #8 in the D1 Baseball poll and #15 in Baseball America poll. (we were #13 and #17, respectively, last week)

*Nick Swinney was named ACC Pitcher of the Week and one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week, per Collegiate Baseball magazine for his outing against Purdue (15 Ks, 1 hit)

Good Lord. 10 runs in the 1st inning. Didn't see that coming. I read where Coastal had won 7 straight games before this one. Avent's revenge for 2016 i suppose
