It does bug me that this is happening in China. An entire city could be wiped out and nobody would hear about it.

A new disaster China brings to the world. As long as we cut off the connections with them, we should be fine. Probably hundreds of thousands will die from it.

Fuck this shit! They try to spread this deadly virus to the rest of the world. Not to say they are a real-life hell of the entire country already. A city of 10M citizens is locked down.

They should ban EVERYONE coming from China, or at least isolate for a while.

I think the only solution is to make camps. Put all non round eye people in them. We can offer them jobs in these camps like farming and stuff to pay their rent. Just good historical evidence to show that this is the best solution while this blows over.

Interspecies sex.

I mean, interspecies virus. Bloody virus jumped from an unknown animal -- unknown to world, known to China -- at a live animal market on to a human.

Let this be the snake flu!

My daughter is happy because schools are closed till Feb 17; they just announced "highest state of emergency" yesterday! A quarter of the people wearing masks here.

They are building a 1,000 bed hospital in 6 days in Wuhan. Why 6? Because in 2003 for SARS they built 1,000 bed one in 7 days, setting a world record. Gotta break them world records when you can!

The construction machines look like insects crawling on plot of land.

all CNN:

Quote :
"Japan’s health ministry confirmed two additional cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to six.

The sixth patient -- a man in his 60s in western Japan -- has no history of visiting Wuhan, but is a bus driver who drove tour groups from the central Chinese city for nine days, according to the health ministry.

This is the first case of suspected human-to-human transmission in Japan from someone who did not travel to Wuhan."

Quote :
"The coronavirus patient in Germany has been identified as a 33-year-old German man who works in Starnberg, south of Munich. He had not been to China but was in a meeting with a Chinese national last week, who has since been identified with the coronavirus, Dr. Andreas Zapf, the head of the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food safety said Tuesday.

Zapf said at a news conference that the patient had attended a company meeting in Starnberg last week, where the training manager -- a female Chinese citizen -- was leading the meeting. The Chinese staff member is originally from Shanghai, but her parents had visited her there a few days prior to the meeting in Germany, Zapf said.

The Chinese citizen has since flown back to China. She felt ill on the flight back and tested positive for the coronavirus after her return to Shanghai. She notified the German office upon this discovery, Zapf said."

This is global at this point. The quarantine was too late to be effective, although no one has died overseas yet and there's no signs of anyone passing on overseas once they got it, although that timeframe is still early.

Scorecard is 106 dead, 4515 cases in mainland China, with 68 everywhere else in the world, leader there being Thailand with 14.

Was thinking out loud about the impact of this, not just the virus but all the quarantines and businesses in China now not operating. I've got just-in-time manufacturing where China has become heavily ingrained on the supply side, Chinese manufacturing where they produce the end part is affected which will affect those goods' prices as well as shipping them, a good part of the Chinese transportation system which is hardly small is being held idle (good for the climate short-term, bad for oil) as well as a drastic decline in overseas trips to and from China, and you have businesses like Starbucks which have closed half their Chinese locations. And there's not a foreseeable end in site yet.

This will be an excellent case study for global climate and global economic effects.

Number of cases surpasses SARS cases from 2003

~6,200 cases, ~100 of which outside China
132 deaths, all in China
60 million Chinese under full or partial lockdown
US, Japan, and other countries evacuating their citizens from Wuhan on chartered flights

At one site I was reading talk about this and it was saying considering the confirmed cases and the fatality rate, best-case scenario is it's a bad flu season.

Today more than half the people, perhaps 3/4, I saw were wearing face-masks, and I wore one too, because I had to at the clinic (I have a bad cold so worked from home). Crazy lines at the supermarket checkout with certain groceries running low and the employees constantly restocking them. Next to oranges and certain other fruits they had signs saying "Fruits with Vitamin C help strengthen immune system". That gave me a chuckle... and yeah, they had a ton of oranges, way more than normally.

it is way deadlier than the common flu, and also more contagious than the flu or SARS, but pales in mortality to SARS and MERS.

this is a great page with live stats:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus

and comparisons to common flu, SARS, and MERS:

Transmission Rates (how many people one infected person will infect)
nCoV: 2.0-3.1
Flu: 1.3
SARS: 2.0

Mortality Rate
nCoV: 2%
Flu: 0.01%
SARS: 10%
MERS: 34%

Right now, 7,921 cases with 170 deaths.

This is super cool:

I read that the mortality rate is actually much much lower than 2% due to underreporting of active cases.

1. Saw an estimate the number of infected in Wuhan could be more like 75k.

2. You can't calculate the fatality rate now because you're at the front end.

3. The one bright side is even just counting China only, the deaths are all occurring in Hubei. Only 10 deaths have occurred in Rest of China.
