I got an Oculus Rift S for Christmas. Holy shit it is awesome. I've only really had a chance to play around with some of the tech demos and a few hours of real games but this is way better than I thought it would be. I can't speak for any of the other VR headsets on the market, but VR technology in general is the most revolutionary gaming experience since the jump from 2D sprites to 3D models.

So I finished off Vader Immortal episode 1 (only about 30 mins for the main story line) and it was great for only $10. Lightsaber dojo is fun.

I just finished playing Superhot for about 20 mins. I'm not really gonna be able to play it in full until my extension cables arrive. My little computer caddy area in my office is too small for it. It is a fuckin workout though. After just that short amount of time, I'm hot and sweaty.

Picked up a bunch of other VR games that I haven't had a chance to play yet, but all in good time. Really looking forward to Half Life Alyx, I just hope my computer can handle it. What VR games are you guys playing? What VR hardware do you have?

Have the original Rift, yeah it’s awesome.

Robo Recall came bundled with the First rift Touch and it’s great fun, I don’t know if it’s free with Rift S or not.

If you like Bethesda games both Skyrim and Fallout 4 are great in VR. The Pipboy menu in Fallout is especially cool since it works in real time just by raising your arm to your face.

Beat saber is great as well.

I’ve heard Boneworks is really impressive if you have your VR legs, but it has next to no comfort features so if you get sick at all in VR this will definitely make you sick.

^^Talking about racing games, I got Redout on Steam for $7. If you are unfamiliar, it is an F-Zero type futuristic racing game, so not exactly Gran Turismo when it comes to realism, but it is still very face paced and fun. Only problem is that it has only been ported to VR -- not developed with VR in mind from the ground up so it has some hiccups. It is still very immersive and fun though. And sometimes I wanna play a VR game just sitting in a chair with a traditional controller.

This has been on my radar for awhile now and this thread inspired me to finally go in; it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow . My computer is fast enough to run Rift S, but my setup has limited space around it so I decided to go with Quest.

I've got a question: I've read you can connect Quest up to a PC anyway and by doing that can use a lot of the Rift software on the Quest. Is that 100%, or will some Rift software simply be incompatible with Quest under any circumstances?

^From what I have heard Quest is more for people without any type of high performance gaming rig. Yes, you can hook it up to your PC for some applications, but it wasn't meant for that initially so it won't work as optimally as a Rift S. I think the link cable is just a USB-C on a Quest (vs USB for power and sound on Rift S and Display Port for picture).

The biggest difference is that Rift S processing is all done on your PC, so you can increase performance by upgrading your video card/processor/etc. Most VR games are available on both the Oculus store AND Steam, but I prefer to get them on Steam if possible since their return policy is really good and they have so many sales. With Quest, you'll need to jump through a few hoops to get Steam VR working properly, but it can be done.

Just finished playing Lone Echo for about an hour. This kind of game is what VR is really meant for. It is set in space aboard a space station so you use in game hand grips and thrusters to maneuver around. The level of immersion with the headset and good quality headphones is by far the highest I have ever encountered in any video game in my life. It is seriously to the point where if something comes flying at my face, I instinctively flinch/try to move out of my way even though I know it isn't real.

Thanks! Got my Quest today and I think it's fantastic! Played around with Wander for a while, got Moss but it's still downloading, and played around with some of the demos it came with, like Beat Saber. Really looking forward to trying big games like Skyrim and Asgard's Wrath; I'm pretty sure for the latter I need to get it connected to my PC first (not sure about Skyrim offhand). Part of me wishes I'd gone with Rift S, but that would mean I'd have to relocate my PC setup for more room, and I wouldn't be able to take it over to friend's homes and let them try it out. And I'm pretty blown away by the Quest as is, so that's cool.

I got a PS VR for christmas and I love it. The cable set up is a little cumbersome and the display isn't anywhere close to my 4K tv, but the experience is incredible. I especially love the bots games with the move controllers. You can play regular games using the headset but it's almost like sitting in the front row of a movie theater. I found my reaction time was lacking for a game like disc jam because you're so close to everything.

“No man’s sky” vr is really good on psvr if you want a long in depth rpg. Also check out the Batman vr, it’s fairly short. Rush of blood is a must as well. The London heist vr experience is really excellent too.

HTC Vive here. Got it when it was the only set available with room scale - I think Oculus has caught up by now. Really enjoy the Audioshield/Beat Saber type games, Superhot was fun, Pavlov - is awesome if you get in with a good online group, kids play Job Simulator constantly.

Wish I had more time to play and check out newer games.

^^^ it was like $6 in the PS store. I played a little of it, its pretty cool initially but I can see where it would be annoying later on because you have to use the move controllers vs the regular one so you can't actually walk around.

I've got another question I hope someone can help me with.

I just got Oculus Link to hook up my Quest to my PC. When I get them connected it's pretty jerky/choppy with some kind of lag on the home screen (I haven't tried running any apps on it yet).

On Oculus's website they recommend setting your PC monitor to a refresh rate of 75Hz ( https://support.oculus.com/1636962739910975/ ). My monitor was set at 59Hz and when I tried messing around with it the best I could get was 72Hz at 640 x 480 resolution (and I haven't gotten around to checking the Oculus performance at that setting yet).

For what it's worth, my monitor is some generic Samsung monitor that I got at Walmart for $150 or 200 and my graphics card is Radeon RX 580.

So anyway, is it possible that getting a better monitor could help with the choppiness? Or any other suggestions?

I think I've got things working well enough right now, but I'll check that place out if I still have problems.

Turns out that it only seems to be the Oculus Home page (when you're actually in a room with windows and mountains in the distance) that's choppy for me, the actual apps seem fine. Well, at least I've tried Google Earth and it was fine.

The only real pain in the ass problem I still have to deal with is my PC mouse ends up disabled after I've been on Oculus; the only way I know to fix that is to restart the computer and/or unplug the mouse and plug it back in. I've switched around the USB ports that both are plugged into but I haven't bothered to check if that fixes it or not.

^I don't even us the Oculus home page for anything. I don't really see the purpose of it other than as a very basic tech demo. Everything I need to do I can get to from the little control panel that comes up when you push the oculus button on the right controller.

^I don't use it for anything either, but I can't keep it from coming up (or at least I don't know how). As soon as I connect my headset to the PC, I'm standing above a square grid plane that extends to infinity and everything is running smoothly. Several seconds later the room (fireplace, bookshelves, windows) starts loading in and things start getting choppy.

While I was rearranging how my things are plugged in to USB ports I noticed I one of them is labelled "VR Ready". Before this I had the Oculus plugged into a port labelled "SuperSpeed" but apparently VR Ready is an improvement: Still choppy, but at least now I can navigate fully (was having issues with that before). Mouse no longer disables, too.

Anyway, is there a way to stop the Home environment from coming up?

^Mess around with the settings a bit, mine doesn't come up but I can't remember how I got it to do that. I have it set so that when I put the headset on, I can still see my life environment (although black/white and a little blurry in some areas) with an overlay of the Oculus control panel that I can use to bring up my PC desktop, Steam, games library, etc.

I've got another question: Anybody know of a good astronomy VR app? I tried Adventures in Space: Black Holes and Beyond, but it's pretty minimal with just a handful of videos, really. I'm hoping for something where you can explore the known universe, or something like that. Anything like that out there?

^,^^I paid extra just after new year's to get an Oculus Quest on Amazon (third party vendor). I think it was ~$700, which I think is about 40% over list price.

I'd been planning on getting one for my niece and nephew for their birthdays this summer. Then I decided to go ahead and get it sooner, to give them something to do during the lockdown. I got tired of waiting for prices to come down, so I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought them one for about $800 (third party on Amazon again).

My understanding is that it's not just high demand, but also low Chinese production that's currently the problem. A few weeks ago I heard Chinese production is picking back up (in general, I mean; I didn't hear that in reference to Oculus specifically) so it's possible supply might come back in a few weeks (I'm only guessing).

In the meantime, FWIW I sometimes look at nowinstock ( https://www.nowinstock.net/videogaming/accessories/oculusquest/ ). It claims to show when major vendors (Walmart, Amazon, a few others) have stock. On the other hand, it's never done me any good since (as you can see if you check the link) no stock seems to last more than 15 minutes at the moment (and therefore I can't vouch for its accuracy either). You have to be really lucky to catch the window; there's an item alert at the bottom which might be worth trying.

I just got a hotas + Star Wars Squadrons, and man VR is really fun with this set up.

I got a Quest 2 as soon as it was available. Haven't had much time to play it until now, though. I got the elite strap for it and maybe I'll get used to it, but I actually prefer the basic rubber strap on the original. When I put on the Quest 2, my glasses keep getting shoved into my eyes when I'm trying to slide the headset over them, and I'm never really satisfied with how it sits. I just ordered a Frankenquest 2 adapter that lets you attach a Vive deluxe strap w headphones to the Quest 2 so I'm hoping that will be a better fit.

Just started playing Lies Beneath which is like a comic book style surreal horror game; so far I'd definitely recommend it.

^the titles to play without a PC will be limited. You're not going to be able to play the AAA titles. Look up "Oculus Quest store" for the Quest-specific titles.


I pre-ordered an HP Reverb G2 in October and should be on-track to get it in December. Europeans are super pissed this morning since they got pushed back another 2 weeks. HP is pulling an Nvidia, basically.

Yeah the Facebook thing is BS. Oculus just updated their terms of service -- on Rift S at least you can defer linking the FB account until I think 2023 and from then on it is required. On Quest 2, you HAVE to link it now in order to use it. If you don't already have a FB account and make one just to use Oculus, you may get flagged/suspended because FB's algorithm for detecting bots is awful. There are a lot of horror stories on Reddit of people who had tons of games that they had already bought on Oculus, then when they made an FB account to keep playing, it was automatically flagged/suspended/banned and they lost everything. Customer service is apparently shit too, which sucks since Oculus apparently used to have really good customer service.

^I'm aware of many social media apps you can get for Oculus, but since I've never been particularly interested in that I don't really have much more info than that.

There are apps that let you watch movies; the presentation is as if you are in a theater watching it on the big screen.

One of the Oculus apps I've used a lot is Wander. It's basically Google maps in VR. There are literally millions of 360 degree photos from around the world you can view.

And I'm aware of VR porn videos you can watch. I expect there's more interactive porn type stuff out there, but I've never come across it.

There are more than just games. They have these things called "experiences" where it is like a short movie that you experience in first person. You watch the "movie" but you have complete freedom to look around and walk around as it happens.

There was a pretty interesting one I downloaded called "1943 Berlin Blitz" which had you onboard an RAF bomber during an recreated WWII bombing mission. It had audio spliced in from radio communications/recordings from the actual mission. You could walk around inside the bomber the whole time, look out the windows, etc. The whole thing was about 25 mins long.

Lots of stuff like that to varying levels of interactivity as well as virtual houses/rooms you can just kinda chill out in and watch squirrels/decorate/etc. And yeah, VR porn isn't bad.

^Not sure what to tell you. I know the first Quest just came out in 2019 and the Quest 2 came out in 2020 about 1.5 years later, but all the games that have come out since will run on both, I believe. Take that for what it's worth; I'm not aware of any plan to discontinue support for the original Quest, so I'm thinking the Quest 2 should continue to be supported with new apps for a few years, at least.

Don't get a Rift S -- Oculus has made it very clear that the Quest series is what they will be focusing on going forward. I don't know if Rift S has been fully discontinued yet, but their support for it is minimal. Shame though, the Rift S is entirely dependent on your PC hardware so theoretically as you continue to update your machine, the Rift S would get better too.

If you have the funds, a Valve Index is prob your best bet for future proofing. Quest 2 will prob last you the length of a console cycle though. Regardless of what you end up with, I highly recommend that you get any games through Steam instead of the Oculus store due to the Facebook shenanigans I mentioned above. Steam has very good customer service whereas Oculus is shit now in that area. The only games I have in the Oculus store are the exclusives (Lone Echo and Vader Immortal).
