Thread made for assistant coaches this offseason but title kept vague so it can be used for 2021 as well[Edited on November 30, 2019 at 10:49 PM. Reason : this has to be done to be fair to tob]

Lots of debate on Des & George & the Co-OC deal. IMO neither is the answer. Not only do they lack play calling ability but they clearly aren’t up to par in coaching ability at that level. So, it’s not a question of IF they’re replaced, it’s a question of what do they do next year. Obviously we need to keep them on staff, just at lesser positions. Ppl are debating if we can keep them in that scenario. I’m curious what they see when they look in the mirror. Deep down, I’m guessing they won’t be insulted by the demotion. Drink was better than I realized. Need a guy like that back.

Everyone sees last year NFL caliber offense and this years terrible offense and somehow the only difference they recognize is the presence of Drinkwitz?Everyone hated Drink's playcalling when he was here. Now that he's managed to make a B-league recruiting powerhouse look good in the B-league everyone thinks he's a golden god?No. Last year's offense was not thanks to Drinkwitz, it was thanks to Drinkwitz AND Finley/Harmon/Bradbury/Meyers/etc. Our OCs now don't have any of those pieces.

^ might as well throw in Ledford's coaching to that list.Huxtable is out.https://twitter.com/KeepBlitzin/status/1201505115955482625?s=19https://twitter.com/TheWolfpacker/status/1201505717179625473?s=19[Edited on December 2, 2019 at 9:32 AM. Reason : added twitter links]

^^give this guy the job![Edited on December 2, 2019 at 3:02 PM. Reason : Have you considered a 2-2-7 though? I think 3 linemen may be too many]

Drink was a good OC. A good OC, not a great one.Anyway it deffo seems like the leaks that pointed the finger at Hux after the year (strangely, given the fans revolt over the co-OCs started long before the season went south) are hinting that Gibson is getting the gig. I am not impressed if that is the case, but if Dave thinks that's his guy then so be it, he's the one betting his career on it.
12/2/2019 6:10:18 PM
we definitely aren't fixing the run defense by keeping this 3-3-5
12/2/2019 6:20:18 PM
^^agreed about Drink as a good, not great, OC. If Gibson is the guy, and he may be, wouldn’t they just go ahead and announce that he’s being promoted?[Edited on December 2, 2019 at 6:58 PM. Reason : A]

I'm dubious that the solution to this shitty season was already in the program all along. This is a situation that screams outside hire--half-baked recruiting class be damned.
12/2/2019 7:13:57 PM
You mean you don't think the guy who made our defense noticeably worse is the answer?
12/2/2019 7:22:10 PM
the 3-3-5 seems like a great sub package and if we employed it situationally i bet it would have its useshowever if we ran it almost exclusively while allowing AJ Dillon to get to Know our defense in a Biblical sense, its much less appealing
12/2/2019 10:58:59 PM
I heard one person say they think Addazio is coming to DC - I can't see any reason that would make sense, since he's never coached a defensive position, but I guess crazier things have happened.I bet Gibson gets the spot
12/2/2019 11:55:05 PM
They meant OC not DC and it isn't happening anyways.Thats a pipe dream. Its either Gibson or a mid level hire. Look at the WKU level...
12/3/2019 11:13:50 AM
i'd be cool bringing Clayton White back

3-3-5 is a problem against teams that run jumbo packages. They just push you around. They have tight ends blocking defensive backs.
12/3/2019 5:57:36 PM
Did the defense give up before or after they let Bailey run for 102 yards on two carries in the second quarter?
12/4/2019 8:06:50 AM
3-3-5 seems to work fine for UF, LSU, Clemson, etc. I don't think it's the system, I think it's the personnel. BC's starting OL/TE: RS-FR, RS-SR, RS-SO, RS-SR, JR, RS-SR, SRNC State's 2-deep on the DL for the BC game, note JSW was out: FR, RS-FR, SO, 3 RS-SO, RS-JR, RS-SRSo their OL/TE have 5 upperclassmen and our 2-deep on the DL had 2 upperclassmen. Of course they pushed us around, particularly as guys like Murchison and McNeil had to come off the field. Let's say we're running a 4-man front, is that really helping a ton with JSW out? Hell our back-up DE that game was Lyas and that dude can ONLY rush the passer and is almost useless against the run. We ran a 3-3-5 because at the start of the season, we only had about 5 healthy DL. If we're going to stick to the 3-3-5, we're going to have to change up our recruiting to bring in the right bodies to run it.
12/4/2019 10:02:52 AM
Clemson's base defense is not a 3-3-5, it's a 4-2-5. LSU runs a 3-4. Florida's defense is much closer to a 4-2-5 or 4-3 (or 3-4) than a 3-3-5. Etc doesn't play football.
12/4/2019 11:26:44 AM
Gibson promoted to DC
12/4/2019 1:12:19 PM
Meh. Seems like a good way for Doeren to lose his job next year
12/4/2019 1:15:18 PM
Big oof.

Gibson promoted to DC.[Everyone disliked that.]

Pros:- I think being schematically different from other teams can be an advantage if executed correctly.- From a nerd-football perspective, I'm excited. I don't know much about the 3-3-5 and look forward to learning more about it.Meh:- We were ass on defense this year but I don't know how much of that is due to the roster breakdown/injuries/new scheme vs the scheme being crap.Cons:- Gibson coached good defenses in 2015 & 2016 (top 30 per SP+) but otherwise has been average (49) or worse (65, 76).- Could be wrong but almost every BIG12 team during that time ran the spread. Don't know how the 3-3-5 would fair against run heavy schemes like BC.[Edited on December 4, 2019 at 2:58 PM. Reason : Forgot Steve Addazio was fired.]
12/4/2019 2:46:11 PM
well BC did fire their coach, so their offensive scheme will likely changebut I get your point
12/4/2019 2:48:50 PM
Well, with the Gibson hiring we can move on to the OC situation.Do we have any actual expectations for that to change? Or is it more hope at this point?
12/6/2019 7:07:47 AM
I don't think you should expect anything until after the early signing period.
