Should I get a real ID? What’s the purpose? Or more to the point...if I opt not to do it now is that gonna create any issues later? I need to update my address on my drivers license. I can do that online easily. But it says if I opt not to do the real ID thing my new drivers license will say “Not For Federal Identification” which seems like some real bullshit to me. But will that actually be something I should care about? I’m mostly trying to avoid going to the DMV if I can help it. Edit: I have a passport, so that’s obviously a form of federal ID. Is there any reason I want or need my drivers license to also be a form of federal ID?[Edited on November 5, 2018 at 8:42 AM. Reason : A]

you don't need it, but if you don't want to have to use a passport to fly domestically you'll need it in a couple years and the DMV lines will only get longer

Your passport will work as a federal ID for all purposes you would need an ID for; however do you really want to travel with your passport or take it with you to federal buildings? I plan to get a real ID once it’s required for domestic air travel (10/1/2020)

Yeah I don’t wanna have to carry a passport when it’s not necessary. So yes I should get it. I’ll probably wait till closer to 2020 to get it, I guess. I’m just outta the loop apparently. Didn’t realize the domestic flights were gonna require it soon. Just haven’t been paying attention, I guess.

If your driver's license expires before 2020 just get it done then. I did when I had to get mine renewed back in June. Pretty easy.
