"Trapped in a gold 2002 Honda Odyssey van with his time running short, 16-year old Kyle Plush asked Siri to call 911 and begged the dispatcher for help in a series of emergency calls released by Cincinnati police. Law enforcement looked for the van, but Kyle was dead, stuck under seats in the van, when he was found hours after the calls."

How the HELL does that happen?! Been trying to figure out the physics here, and I just can't.

We are taking our 2016 Odyssey in for a recall for something with the back seats. Not sure if this is same issue or not.

edit: Ok ours has to do with the 2nd row tipping forward. Either way, getting that shit done!

"But just two minutes before officers ended their search, Kyle had called 911 again.
This time his voice was faint but he gave key information about the type of van he was in - something he hadn't done during the first call.
"This is not a joke. This is not a joke. I'm trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van," he said.
Banging can be heard in the background.
"I probably don't have much time left. Tell my Mom I love her, if I die," Kyle tells the 911 operator.
The call lasted more than 2½ minutes. There is no response from the operator on the recording."

Quote :
"The operator who took the second 911 call is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Chief Isaac said.
"On the second 911 call, something has gone terribly wrong. This young man was crying out for help. We weren't able to get that information to the officers on the scene and we need to find out why," he said.
Mayor John Cranley said "the events leading up to Kyle's death are devastating and also raise concerning questions about our City's emergency 911 system and police response.""

I'm curious how the first call ended. Kid couldn't reach/touch his phone, so he was using voice commands to call 911. Did he also use a voice command to end the call, or did 911 hang up on him, or did it just randomly drop?

After reading about this, it sounds like the 911 operators fucked up big-time.

I don't think 911 was told the vehicle specifics until the officers were almost done with the sweep, and 911 didn't relay details of the second call for some fucking reason.

Why would the driver get out, climb into the back, and then reach over the 3rd row? Wouldn't it be easier to get out of the driver's seat, walk behind the vehicle, and open the trunk?

^I know, but why do it like that when you could just pop the trunk?

so many unanswered questions in that CNN link.

this is so sad... what a needless death

i have no idea obv, but is the rear seat that strong? i would have thought an average 16 yo teen could fight back, if not push it back to its original position, at least hold it off to not get crushed. but i guess it was his body positioning and the way he was pinned that made it impossible to hold off the seat. and probably he was in a position where if he used his lower body to try to maneuver or gain leverage, it meant getting crushed further even more, so he probably didn't even have the option to struggle and just had to stay still and hope to be found.

911 responders seemingly messed up very bad.

Vans don't have trunks.

This is crazy. We used to have a 2016 odyssey and I've pulled the same move as the kid once or twice

It's being lazy, pretty much. I've tried it once or twice in my Sienna (whose 3rd row collapses in a safer way) and found that you can never reach any crap laying on the floor that way

^When you were alone? Why after getting out of the drivers seat would you climb back into the van through the side door, past the second row, then over the 3rd row seats to reach something when you can just open the back door and grab it? I could see reaching over the back if you have 7, or 8 people in there, but not when alone.

He wasn't in the driver's seat. Pretty sure he had been parked at school all day, went back to get stuff for tennis and died. I assume he had shit in the seating area and leaned over the back seat to get something out of the cargo area (NOT A GODDAMN TRUNK.)

It's not a trunk but there is a rear door hatch that opens to give you easy access to the contents in the back. I believe that was the question. I own a odyssey and I would never crawl to the third row to get something out of the back when I could easily get it by popping the rear door hatch. I'm wondering if the rear door hatch didn't work and that was the only way he could get to it.

^^My thought too. It had to be something like that if he didn't just walk to the back of the vehicle and open the door.

Based on some of the replies, it sounds like a few people know what happened.

I'm not one of those people. I'm still at a loss to understand how someone would find themselves stuck in a van with the seats crushing them.

I'm no minivan expert, even if I did recently rent one for 5 days. Could someone please explain?

He could've been changing into tennis clothes in the back seat, then went to grab his racket from the trunk without leaving the car?

I didn't understand how this could happen either until I saw the video. Those seats pivot and fold forward, which allows them to end up like they did
