We are taking our 2016 Odyssey in for a recall for something with the back seats. Not sure if this is same issue or not. edit: Ok ours has to do with the 2nd row tipping forward. Either way, getting that shit done![Edited on April 13, 2018 at 10:54 AM. Reason : .]

I got really bad anxiety read about this.

After reading about this, it sounds like the 911 operators fucked up big-time.
4/13/2018 11:57:53 AM
7 parkings or whatever, it should be really damn easy to find a gold Honda odyssey just about anywherewtf
4/13/2018 7:54:10 PM
How awful.

I don't think 911 was told the vehicle specifics until the officers were almost done with the sweep, and 911 didn't relay details of the second call for some fucking reason.

Why would the driver get out, climb into the back, and then reach over the 3rd row? Wouldn't it be easier to get out of the driver's seat, walk behind the vehicle, and open the trunk?

To get his tennis gear. You really trying to blame the dead kid for his car eating him?
4/13/2018 11:38:42 PM
^I know, but why do it like that when you could just pop the trunk?

so many unanswered questions in that CNN link.this is so sad... what a needless death i have no idea obv, but is the rear seat that strong? i would have thought an average 16 yo teen could fight back, if not push it back to its original position, at least hold it off to not get crushed. but i guess it was his body positioning and the way he was pinned that made it impossible to hold off the seat. and probably he was in a position where if he used his lower body to try to maneuver or gain leverage, it meant getting crushed further even more, so he probably didn't even have the option to struggle and just had to stay still and hope to be found.911 responders seemingly messed up very bad.

This is crazy. We used to have a 2016 odyssey and I've pulled the same move as the kid once or twice

^When you were alone? Why after getting out of the drivers seat would you climb back into the van through the side door, past the second row, then over the 3rd row seats to reach something when you can just open the back door and grab it? I could see reaching over the back if you have 7, or 8 people in there, but not when alone.

He wasn't in the driver's seat. Pretty sure he had been parked at school all day, went back to get stuff for tennis and died. I assume he had shit in the seating area and leaned over the back seat to get something out of the cargo area (NOT A GODDAMN TRUNK.)
4/14/2018 9:27:11 PM
It's not a trunk but there is a rear door hatch that opens to give you easy access to the contents in the back. I believe that was the question. I own a odyssey and I would never crawl to the third row to get something out of the back when I could easily get it by popping the rear door hatch. I'm wondering if the rear door hatch didn't work and that was the only way he could get to it.
4/15/2018 12:25:28 AM
I think the van was backed in...rear access would have been, ahem, tight!!!
4/15/2018 12:43:50 AM
^^My thought too. It had to be something like that if he didn't just walk to the back of the vehicle and open the door.

Based on some of the replies, it sounds like a few people know what happened. I'm not one of those people. I'm still at a loss to understand how someone would find themselves stuck in a van with the seats crushing them.I'm no minivan expert, even if I did recently rent one for 5 days. Could someone please explain?
4/16/2018 9:02:46 AM
the video on this page didn't clarify it?
4/16/2018 9:04:28 AM
or low branches and he didn't want to open the hatch to scratch up the back
4/16/2018 9:20:42 AM
Yeah didn't want to scratch up his sweet 2002 Honda Odyssey
4/16/2018 12:23:28 PM
He could've been changing into tennis clothes in the back seat, then went to grab his racket from the trunk without leaving the car?I didn't understand how this could happen either until I saw the video. Those seats pivot and fold forward, which allows them to end up like they did
