Ok so I'm working on House of Leaves currently, but it is going rather slowly because I can't really read it in bed which is when I do most of my reading.

So Ken Follett - not a spooky writer. Should I delve into his work? Looks pretty respectable.

Don't really know if this'd be what you're looking for, but I highly recommend Perdido Street Station by China Miéville. It's not at all straight horror, but it's a good mix of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy.
