markell is a wild card. keatts probably thought suspending him wouldnt be a huge deal, which he wasnt when we ran up the lead in the 1h while uncg played real basketball. then we got their big in foul trouble and they switched to gimmick ball and we reacted like giant pussies while their jacked 3s started going in

markell wouldve been very valuable then because he wouldve just charged full speed into their press and made shit happen. normally this is a very bad idea, but it's needed in a game like this where your other option is spending 25 seconds on the clock before taking a terrible three you wont make because your team cant shoot. some shitty turnovers are worth the tradeoff if you can actually get some baskets otherwise

maybe uncg will be dumb enough to blow this tho

this had nothing to do with abu. we got up big because lennard got their only real big man in foul trouble and after that anybody taller than 6'4 has been irrelevant in this game (also 6'4 torin dorn was irrelevant because he disappears literally any time things get tough) because braxton beverly in 5'6 and still thinks this is high school

abu was the only player whose +/- was positive in this game

this had nothing to do with how he played because, again, the bigs had zero impact on this game after the 13 minute mark of the first half thanks to the midget who played point guard like hes in a catholic middle school league

standing tall in the middle of the lane literally does not matter when uncg put in a 6'6 ymca player with the worst hair cut i have ever seen at center and he just jacked 3s on top of us while some fuck from spain drove around yurt and his 8 second three cone speed thanks to having a literal mile of space

Garbage ass shots(by Beverly) against that 2-3 from Freeman and Beverly got us so far behind in the second half, it was just too much to overcome. And then UNCg shot well during that time.

Keatts got them back in the game in the last seconds but Freeman made a bad decision and UNCg played smart defense. They won.

The crowd in the last minute got loud though, I was really impressed for a Christmas break game.

This season has played out exactly like I expected. We have some good players, but we aren't that good of a team. I was expecting a win, or two vs top 15 teams followed by a lot of bad losses kind of like the Les Robinson era. I won't be shocked, if we shoot something like 80% vs Duke in Raleigh and win, but lose the rest of our conference games.

I disagree with the assessment of the roster. The core issue is with the players and their limitations, however I'm with you that this team should not have been expected to be good and the results thus far are fairly well in line with expectations. There was some hope that Keatts' coaching ability would be able to lift a flawed team above their ability based on the results prior to today. But in this game he looked lost for ideas and like a system coach with no plan b.

It's still way too early to make any long term assessments, but this is going to down in the log for seasons in the future. It's not even that we lost, it's how we lost. If some donk team just has the stars align and they throw in a million garbage buckets that's one thing. Sitting there and letting it happen to you is another.

^^Same here! A friend of mine is working his way through the referee ranks and currently does high school and NCAA D2 games. NC State always hires him for scrimmages. He said we look awful this year and that we just don't have any talent. I'm not going to stress when we lose most of our games.

Just got back from the game, here are my thoughts.

We're in for a long, long season if Johnson isn't back. Beverly was overmatched against UNCG and he is not adept at running the pick and roll which severely limited our offense once UNCG made some adjustments on defense. That's when our offense devolved into the Beverly and Freeman dribbling extravaganza.

Yurtseven is our best player offensively and is a solid rim protector. It hurt him the most not having Johnson to run a two man game. Abu is the 3rd best big in this team and I don't see that changing. He had quite a few mental lapses today where he did a shitty job of blocking out/didn't bother to do it at all and gave up rebounds to short guys. I figure that Keatts played him tons today to see how he responded, regardless of the outcome in order to get ready for conference season. Our press breaking when he and L Freeman was...not good. It wasn't particularly good at all the whole game, but having 2 bigs who don't handle the ball on the floor made it worse.

Man, I wish Sam Hunt was good at basketball. But man, he really isn't. Also I don't know how Lavar Batts could be NC Mr Basketball and not be able to see a second of playing time in relief of a clearly struggling Beverly, who almost singlehandedly shot us out of the game.

All in all, I think we would have won easily with Johnson. But oh well, we aren't very good. Hopefully the transfers/recruits for next year will end up being good because we need them. Losing Nard and Yurt is gonna hurt.

Its amazing what difference playing in front of a home crowd can make. I think we will look a lot better when we start having home games. Even away games energize the players playing in front of a fired up crowd but its hard not to come out flat for these neutral site games.

I agree with the comments about Keatts looking like a system coach today. The problem is he has good bigs but not the perimeter players to run a spread game. I hope they practice all week how to get the ball inside against a 2-3 zone because after today we will be seeing it a lot.
