But I just don't know what you are expecting of our justice system if 16+ is legal. He will definitely be tried in the court of public opinion. And if we as a society really cared about this, we would call up our legislators and try to get them to make 16 and 17 yo's illegal.

But I do wonder who initially set these ages of consent. Were they set back in a day when the ages that people typically got together were generally younger? I don't know.

I mean my grandfather married my grandmother when she was 16, which means that they at least dated a little while prior to that. I think he was 20. They lived together until my grandfather's death at 76, and had 4 kids. Did people think that was weird? Why is 30 so much worse than 20? I mean I think its gross, but I'm just asking as a concerned observer. Why do we feel like 30 is so much more different than 20? Is it because socially we feel like most folks should be settled and have families by then?

Well, I'll ask again, if as a society we feel like 16 and 17 is creepy, then why is it legal for a 30something to date someone that age?

In our laws we should list out boundaries. If we feel like it is ok for a 20 year old to date a 17 year old, then we'll have to list that out. If we feel like 27 should be too old, then make it too old. Why haven't we done this already?

Roy Moore will not be investigated for any of the accusers that have come forward so far. The statute of limitations has been exceeded. This will only be tried in the court of public opinion.

rjrumfel is just generating conversation. the laws don't have any wisdom behind them an mostly deal with sex being taboo. I know I wanted to have sex with older people when i was young and casual sex doesn't hurt anyone. 18 is absolutely arbitrary as far as being able to give consent. Some 25 year olds don't have the mental capacity to give consent and some 16 year olds do.

This is huge in my mind. I think its generally ok but where I have a problem is when the older person is in a position of power or influence. This means managers at work, teachers, professors, and any public officials should lose their job and be banned from this type of work if they are caught REGARDLESS OF AGE. I still don't think they should go to jail though. The age thing is a misdemeanor in my book. I think bill clinton having sex with an intern is much more egregious than your 30 year old buddy dating the 16 year old he met at the bar.

Setting an equation makes a lot more since than a set age. I have always used the rule "half your age plus 5" which means the age doesn't reach 18 until you are 26.
