...that we are allowed to like. I feel like entertainment has always been full of scumbags but we used to could at least enjoy the art without having to dwell on what terrible people they were.

Louis CK and Jeffery Tambor now too

I'm not saying they shouldn't be dragged but do I have to stop watching stuff they are in entirely?

you can like the art but hate the artist

it’s harder to keep the two separate for some of the real monsters, though

Yeah but they are straight up cancelling and reshooting finished movies at this point. Lock them up for sure if they are predators, I'm not saying to let them off. I just don't want to have to feel guilty for watching a movie or a show.

You can keep Spacey, just let me keep JT

Here is the thing though. When you go out and buy a season of HOC or spend 15 dollars for a movie ticket, you're not just enjoying an artist's work. You're putting money in an artist's pocket. Your money is going to the legal team to help keep them away from the consequences of their actions.

I mean, actions have consequences

this is what happens when these behaviors go unchecked for decades. it’s a much-needed shift that we’re all going through at the same time

lawyers aren’t gonna get a majority of them out of this, regardless of how much money they have and are spending. there’s no going back from this.

Yeah this is more of a lament than anything. It's better to know and have these guys punished, it was just nice not to have to worry that every entertainment choice you made didn't have to be a moral decision.

Would you go buy stuff from a corner store where either the owner or the employee was a known rapist/pedophile and had gotten away with it so far?

That's not really the same. I can go to other corner stores and get the exact same thing.

Why would anyone go to an establishment they know is run or operated by a known sex offender or pedophile. I make a point to stay away from those people.

The question you want to ask yourself though, and this is where it gets kinda sticky, is are you going to stop watching any move that you know was produced by The Weinstein Company? Because there are good movies produced from TWC.

rjrumfel, didn't you answer your own question before you asked it?

if you won't patronize an establishment run or manned by a sexual predator, why would you patronize a service (movies) run or owned by one?

I mean, what if we found out that Katlheen Kennedy kept a rotating staff of young boys to fondle? Does that mean we would all stop watching any new Star Wars movie that came out? That would certainly be disappointing.

But you know, I feel bad even saying something like "fuck Kevin Spacey for ruining HOC" because ruining HOC for me is so small in comparison to what he did to his victims.

Probably every movie and TV show ever made had some scumbags somehow associated with it. You might as well never watch TV, Movies, or listen to music ever again.

Yeah I'm torn, absolutely lock up or sue predators, no denial. But do I have to do the complex calculus of every possible person involved with something I want to watch or enjoy

Like if I buy fair trade coffee do I have to worry about if the company that makes the uniforms that the fair trade coffee's janitors wear was sourced from cotton farmed in a sustainable way and that the workers who harvested the cotton got paid a fair wage and that their transportation to work was fueled by efficient engines that were made from metals harvested in as ecologically friendly a way as possible and not by a Chinese firm in Africa strip mining using what amounts to slave labor to pump profits back to a high polluting country that props up North Korea so they can develop nuclear weapons causing conflict with the USA which has a destabilizing impact on the global economy.

Yeah it's bad no doubt, I don't want to minimize it but people rationalize shit every day about terrible people they have to deal with (hell look at Donald "Grab them by the Pussy" Trump).

Anyway on a more humorous note, let's say you get to pick 10 problematic entertainers, authors, or athletes and forsake all others. Who you got?

Gonna work on my list.
- Miles Davis (Wife Beater)
- Raymond Chandler (Philanderer)
- TBD
- TBD
- TBD
- TBD

There's nothing that would suggest that artists or celebrities are morally outstanding individuals. In a lot of cases, the sacrifices they've made or their fucked up pasts are what have enabled them to produce good art. It's not a secret that comedians, for example, are typically not happy people. These are not religious leaders or politicians, they're just people that are good at something or talented.

Everyone is a perfect person on the internet because no one has outed you for any of the shameful things you may have done. You pass people on the street every day that have sexually assaulted people. You have good friends that have engaged in some sort of sexual misconduct, and you still consider them to be a decent person, because you don't know what they've done or maybe you've rationalized it in some way. Statistically, at least a couple people in this thread have done things that would get them crucified if they were a public figure. I'm pretty sure TWW has more than its fair share of sexual deviants.

These allegations are all coming out of the woodwork now because there's enough people who are sick of the bullshit that goes in Hollywood and they've got strength in numbers now. If I were a Hollywood A-lister that has treated women poorly, I'd be pretty nervous right now...

It's pathetic how many Americans continue to idolize asshole celebrities so much, which only feeds these types of jerks' egos. I think it's great that all of this dirt is getting exposed, but that doesn't really address the issue we have in this country with the unhealthy and obsessive worship of the rich and elite. Outing these guys doesn't undo the damage that's been done, and unless people stop lining the pockets of powerful and abusive men, this isn't going to solve a whole lot.

^^^Pretty sure no one has ever worshiped Harvey Weinstein. Perhaps people in the Hollywood circle, but I don't know one person I've ever heard say "I want to be Harvey Weinstein when I grow up."

Romans basically worshiped gladiators, this isn't a new thing.

^^ he was good friends with tons of A-list celebrities and even though plenty of people knew he was a creep, he still got away with it for YEARS.

Still, you're missing my point. The abuse may be easy to spot from the top since that's who's getting all the attention and bad publicity right now, but the whole industry is filled with these types of people. The money people continue to spend on Hollywood films is a huge part of the problem that nobody wants to admit. If people stopped going to the movies or deleted their Netflix accounts, it would probably change the industry a lot more than just outing assholes who've been overdue.

The NFL is actually pretty similar. Lots of abusive/violent athletes have gotten away with beating their wives/gfs, and because the on field product is so profitable, the owners haven't really had to be held accountable. A lot of people are actually tuning out because of it, and when you couple it with the political stuff that's also giving the league a bad reputation, there's plenty of people who'd rather tune in to the NBA, MLB, NHL, and even US Soccer right now...

Louis CK seems more like a creepy dude with a weird compulsive sex fetish. Clearly inappropriate behavior but he seems to get consent or what he thinks is consent from people before jacking off at them, and most of the stories seem to end with him contacting the person years later and apologizing.

But still, how hard is it to just not jack off at people you don't know and/or coworkers?

^^^ehh...there were stories about him blocking the door and not letting people leave until he had finished. obviously that's not rape. but it's kinda more than just him thinking he had consent...when somebody tries to leave and you don't let them.

Guess he decided the admit and apologize route is better than the lie and be proven a liar later. With how America is this is probably the right path if you likely arent gonna face major jail time at least

People are often a lot more forgiving than they should be. That's why people like Chris Brown and R Kelly still have told of fans. I think it takes guts to admit that you did something wrong, but he's probably just sorry he got caught and won't be able to make jokes about fucked up shit he's done anymore.

Olympian Aly Raisman comes forward about sexual abuse by former doctor

https://www.cbsnews.com/videos/olympian-aly-raisman-comes-forward-about-sexual-abuse-by-former-doctor

20-year USA Gymnastics team doctor accused by 130+ women... that must be a record for the number of accusers. Being in the sports industry, I guess he was going for gold in the number of girls and women he could abuse and get away with?

What about team managers and other higher-ups? Surely they must have known. These gymnasts were being sexually molested by their team doctor, with the acquiescence of the team managers, while they were out there representing the US in Olympics and other major meets. That's just surreal.

What does this say about American society as a whole?

Women in sports, entertainment, and politics are afraid to speak out when they are sexually harassed and abused by those over them, even when they are raped, because they fear they will face the consequences and be mocked and not their abusers? In America? Where women are so "free"? A country which goes around attacking other countries to free their oppressed women? A country where it is en vogue to mock other cultures, religions, and countries where women are not free to do as they like?

How ugly must a society's morals and culture be to create such a toxic, repressive, and fearful atmosphere for victims of sexual abuse? They don't call it "rape culture" for nothing.

Oh and the doctor, BTW, is in jail on unrelated child porn charges. But I hope he is taken back to court by some of his accusers and given additional years so he never comes out.
