TL;DR - "Guardian" companies can have elderly declared legally incompetent without a shred of evidence, send them off to a facility, and sell of their estate for profit. This happens without even family members (sons or daughters) knowing that it happens.

In FroshKiller's world, it's perfectly acceptable for the government to deem someone mentally incapable due to dementia with no proof whatsoever, grant guardianship to a company rather than next of kin, and then sell off their shit legally. This is why having a living will and power of attorney and healthcare power of attorney is so important.

Many of us will be having to deal with these types of issues in probably 15 years or so.

A power of attorney likely wouldn't have stopped the couple from being hauled off to the old folks home, as that seemed to be done with no research whatsoever. It would have prevented the permanent guardianship boondoggle that happened next though, and would likely have gotten this lady sued into bankruptcy.
