Apparently it's going to be directed by JJ Abrams.

Early plot details indicate a new, larger and unfinished yet still operational, Starkiller Base. There will also be a daring rescue attempt to steal Poe from the evil clutches of a to-be-named gangster. Making their task more difficult is that Poe will be frozen in siliconite.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed TFA.

Glad it's not Colin Trevorrow. Episode 7 might have borrowed liberally from Episode 4 but not as much as Jurassic World.

It appears Kathleen Kennedy bit to hard on the hot box office hit director in making these early decisions for IX and Han Solo.

Lets hope JJ can figure out how to resolve story lines rather than ask and never answer a ton of questions about characters. And has creative freedom now that the franchise is a success.

TFA repeats the same story beats because they had to have the film work. It does this to reintroduce the audience to star wars. Instead of rolling the dice with new themes or unfamiliar beats. Minimize financial risk, establish a solid franchise going forward.

This decision was a business decision. JJ chose to have another death star. Another trench run. A character found very similarly to Luke.

They had to get past the prequels and prove they could deliver on the cost to buy starwars. Now that it happened, the star wars films can flesh out a bit. Be more creative. Take more risks. They have locked in the audience that the prequels was trying to.

JJ however was a key stake holder in the decision to repeat so much of ANH. Does he know how to create a movie without lifting so much material from other films?

Hopefully star wars 8 will give him the direction that allows this to happen. JJ mentioned he was jealous he couldn't direct 8 after he read the script. I imagine he wants a crack at original content.
