My wedding is in 15 hours, and this is the view from my apartment.

Please send some good vibes my way.

When people start to tear up during the ceremony they can just blame it on the smoke.

Are you now wedded?

How did it go? Did you have to fend off the flames with hoses?

Congratulations.

Oh and btw, if you respond to my question while on your honeymoon, that should probably be grounds for the big D

Hope you didn't use too much product on your hair. I know that was a concern but hope it wasn't a fire hazard.

Yep, the Whittier fire.

Yes. Fantastic. Thankfully there are trained professionals for that. And thank you!

The ceremony was during daylight so the fire didn't come into visual play. The reception was inside, and we didn't see how red the sky still was until we left the building.

Honeymoon starts in 3 days

The town is surrounded by a national forest and mountain range to the north, ocean to the south. There's not much room in between. These fires have come down into the city many times before, so everyone is always on high alert when something starts.

Ended up not using any at all.

Here's a map of where the fire started and where the wedding was held. They had to use a leaf blower to get rid of all the ash which had built up over night. Miraculously it rained in the early morning, and that kept the fire at bay. The blue dot marks where I live, close to Isla Vista. If you look at the ridge due north of there, that's where the fire crested over the mountains (hence the flames visible in the first post).

So just to be clear your actual town was not on fire right?

[Edited on July 11, 2017 at 1:28 AM. Reason : Also looks like a rough life man. We're all feeling your pain out here in NC.]

^When it's raining ash where you are, it doesn't matter that the flames are farther away. It means the wind is pushing everything in your direction (and you're breathing it in). The last time the flames crested over the peak, the fire made it as far down as the 101.

It's 15 miles to where the fire started, but my apartment is only 6 miles to the peak of the mountains where the fire had reached by late Saturday night (where you can see in the pictures in the first post).

I was in Charlotte having a follow-up celebration with my east coast family...where there was another fire.

Now I'm in Israel with my wife's family. Not the place I want this pattern following me.

my town, my wedding, my anniversary

here’s how it’s impacting me

when in fact it is barely impacting you outside providing an opportunity for hyperbolic self-centered drama

The town in which I am currently living has coincidentally had fires break out on both the weekend I got married and the weekend of my first anniversary. Better? I can't speak for anyone else's experience through these events except for my own, and I haven't hyperbolized what that experience has been.

I was a leader in fund raising efforts to support families who either lost or were temporarily unable to get back to their homes and businesses after the debris flow in January, programmed activities for my students to keep them busy while their parents dealt with these tough situations, and volunteered time at evacuation shelters. And then I spent time providing support for a student of mine and her family who lost a father and a brother in all this mess.

But I came to TWW the first time because I was stressed my wedding wasn't going to happen, and the other times because I needed to release the anxiety of what was happening around me and didn't want to put all this out there at the time, especially while others had it so much worse. Sorry for being so self-centered.

Next year, make sure you plan a last minute anniversary vacation to a city that's burning down, so you can come back in this thread and post about it.
