So I normally try to take care of my babysitters, so they'll typically be down for sitting. That said, for an overnight stay, what kind of pay do you offer for someone to stay the night - our sitter got the kids from daycare Friday, fed them dinner, put them down around 7:30/8 and they slept til 7 AM. We got home @ 3 PM. Do you still pay straight hourly or just offer a sum that seems reasonable. Babysitter is a college kid home for the summer.

200

for 24 hours i'd pay over the regular hourly rate - not many college kids home for the summer want to give up a friday to wake up early on a saturday to play with kids
6/26/2017 5:13:28 PM
Seems like $200+ is a lot to pay when the kids are sleeping 14 of the 22 hours.
6/26/2017 8:56:01 PM
your math is off

So you have either not paid the sitter, which what the fuck, or you have paid the sitter and got some honest feedback about what a fuckin' skinflint you are.

I paid her $220, but thought when an overnight stay or weekend stay was involved, u would just agree to a lump sum as opposed to hourly rate. Say she stayed Friday night through Sunday, I don't think that would normally get $500 - seems awfully high.
6/27/2017 9:15:59 AM
I think it's less about hourly rate and the amount of work she's putting in (obviously she's not "working" when she's sleeping)...and more about the fact that she's looking after and completely responsible for your flesh and blood for a full 24 hours.I'd probably pay in the $250-$300 range.
6/27/2017 9:55:15 AM
Just because they're asleep doesn't mean they aren't "on call".
6/27/2017 12:59:07 PM
agree that you are paying for on-call - you aren't paying them to sleepeven with a standard babysitter - you aren't paying them to watch tv while your kids are sleeping - you are paying for them to be there when shit hits the fanyou don't get to pay someone that works on-call less because a disaster didn't happen

What a Douche Bag move.
6/27/2017 1:18:36 PM
^ & ^^ & ^^^ So if you were to go away for a weekend, you'd pay a 17 year old $500 for 2 days of work?I agree you aren't paying them to sleep and they are no call and what not, but that seems like a shit ton of money for 2 days.
6/27/2017 2:45:41 PM
Can't you just pay them less for normal stays, then more if something goes down or they have to do a bunch of extra work?
6/27/2017 3:40:30 PM
Honestly...I can't really fathom a situation where I would be paying a babysitter to watch my daycare-aged kid overnight. So if I really had to do something like that...then yes, I would pay them a lot of money. At that age, my child is only staying overnight with a relative...MAYBE a close friend who has a child with the same age...but that's it.
6/27/2017 4:31:53 PM
I pay $200 for dog boarding (2 dogs) for a weekend.... So I don't think anyone here is very far off when they say $250/night for child sitting. Especially a weekend.^also a very good point. I don't have children yet, but I'm curious how I'll work this problem. I feel like I'll end up somewhere around what you said.
6/27/2017 4:55:16 PM
Damn. Ya'll some ballers. $150/night is what I'd pay, if I had kids and had to have an overnight sitter. $250-$300/night seems a lot, imo.[Edited on June 27, 2017 at 7:21 PM. Reason : .]

Our babysitter is about to go to college, lives down the street, so if something were to happen, her parents are nearby. She has handled their bedtime routine plenty of times, only new thing was her getting up with them. She's extremely responsible, doesn't drink (I did as a senior but know she is a good kid) and my other options (mom and daycare teacher) couldn't cover. This was a concert, so I couldn't reschedule for a different date.

Honestly, I'd try negotiating with her with a lump sum. The sitter may not know the 'going rate' for an overnight sitting job, and may agree to something lower. I know when I was 17/18, $100 just to watch kids for a night would seem like a pretty easy and awesome deal. I'd only balk at the money if I had other plans. That said, I would pay more for every hour that the sitter has to be up and moving with the kids. Based on the schedule you provided, your sitter is putting the work in since you're not getting home until well into the afternoon. Assuming 12 hours of awake time with the kids, I'd be looking at around $175 with the offer of stocking the kitchen with drinks and snacks and giving her free reign to take anything from the pantry. Probably still evens out to the $200 mark at the end.

Yeah...I'm curious about the context here. However, in the situation I've made up in my head: $50 would be too low. $100 would be a standard if you came back in the morning after breakfast- but then an additional 6 hours- I'd say $160 would be fair. $180 would be solid and $200 would probably have them do it again.

My sisters would get paid $400 to go on a 2-3 day weekend vacation with the people they babysat/nannied for in the 90's-00's

I have a 2.5 year old. He's fairly easy to deal with, and sleeps from 7:15ish-6am the next day. Rarely ever wakes during the night. We dont hire babysitters often as we have parents close by, but I'd probably pay $150-175ish if they had to pick up from daycare, prepare dinner, bath/bedtime routine, prepare breakfast, play all morning, prepare snacks, lunch and put down for a nap from 1pm-2:30pm. $225-250 max for two children.

It's been a few years but there were a few times my wife and I would leave town on Friday afternoon and come back on Sunday afternoon/evening. We usually paid a flat rate of about $250 if I recall. Would leave some cash in case they wanted to order a pizza/eat out for one meal. Would also make sure the kitchen was stocked so she could help herself/make anything she wanted from a bowl of cereal to a steak and baked potato. They always preferred doing this than working their $10/hr job the whole weekend to come home with $125-$150 after taxes
6/28/2017 10:52:15 PM
^That's more along the lines of what I was thinking, even though I'd probly pay more for the whole weekend. Even though my kids are young (1 and 4), they both sleep well. They both slept through the night (going down at 7:30 and 8:15) and sleep until 6:30 and both took 2-3 hour naps around noon the following day.

sleeping is easy (assuming they sleep), but before and after sleeping are the busiest times
