So I have a windows 7 laptop. At least it was a windows 7 laptop, before I updated it to windows 10. Now I want to go back, but apparently I can't go back to windows 7 without this special HP specific windows 7 recovery program on a disk. The disk i guess came with my comp, but I lost it. I went to windows and tried to download a copy of windows 7. I entered the windows 7 CD key on bottom of laptop, and a notification came up that I had to contact HP to get copy of windows since windows 7 came packed in with the HP laptop... WTF???So if I didn't want to have to go and buy the 30 dollars "HP windows 7 home recovery media disk", how could I go about doing this?

Not sure the best place to download windows images anymore, but make sure you get the right version. In your case it will probably be Windows 7 [pro or w/e version you have] OEM...and how much RAM do u have?

I'm pretty sure you can grab generic images directly from microsoft. Your Win7 key may no longer function if it was associated with the Win10 upgrade.

I went to download it from Microsoft, it made me enter my key. I did, then it said I need to get my windows 7 home image from HP since it was installed in HP laptop or some shit. Apparently I need an HP specific recovery disk.....

It told you that when you tried to download the image or when you tried to install?

When I tried to download it, it asked for my windows 7 serial number. I inputed it, and it said to contact HP to recover a copy of windows 7 because it was "installed by the manufacturer of the laptop" or something like that. ridiculous. I have a windows 7 serial number, thus i own the rights to one copy of windows 7, but microsoft wont give it to me, and HP makes me purchase a 60 dollar "HP recovery media CD" in order to reinstall it. Install the shit from scratch, onto a blank hard drive.

Reverting? Did you do the needful?

The reason you're getting flak for the recovery CD is because that OEM image is gonna have all of the drivers specific to your laptop. Or at least it should. You should do fine with a generic image, then just figure out what drivers you need and apply them as needed.

Just out of curiosity, why did you want to go back to 7? Tired of Big Brother?

nah, something much more serious than that.It was so I could play MVP Baseball 2005, which doesn't run on Win 10.
