Saw this on Engadget and was curious if anyone had any recommendations on VPN software/services.

I use vyprvpn but only because it came free with my Giganews subscription. It's slow af though. I rarely get above 50-60mbps on a gigabit connection.

Aren't all VPNs slow?

They vary. I was hoping for a little better than 50-60mbps on a gigabit connection but then again outside the VPN I rarely ever get over 300-400mbps on anything.

I don't think that's your bottleneck in this equation

That's exactly what I was implying. My bandwidth isn't the problem.

Isn't the cheapest least sketchy option an AWS micro instance?

run something on a PVM M1 instance via spot market. you'll never be outbid at $0.01/hr

[Edited on April 7, 2017 at 8:16 PM. Reason : (and get way more bandwidth than a t1/t2 micro)]

I use NordVPN, as do a couple of my friends, and everyone seems to like it.

Have my router forwarding everything through it, works well. Probably cheaper options though.

Depends on where you select your server to be. I haven't really tried anything international as I don't really need to access any region-specific content, so I've jumped around the midwest and east coast and so far speed has been solid. I'm on AT&T Fiber so it drops off some but not enough to really notice anything with my streaming.

I use PIA and get decent download speeds, especially when torrenting things like, umm, Linux distros

I'm not very tech savvy, what's the best bang for the buck? And is it straightforward to use?

For phone/tablet I’ve been using ArkVPN. You can use it for “free” or buy it for subscription. 2.99 a month or 19 a year.

I have used privateinternetaccess for the past couple years, but I just subscribed to PureVPN. PIA has been abysmally slow the past few months, typically getting 5-10 Mbps throughput. I just set up PureVPN last night and it has been much faster (50+ Mbps) but it disconnects very frequently (a couple times an hour) and many of their servers don't seem to respond to connection attempts.

I have PIA and have been mostly satisfied. Have heard better things about Nord and may switch when my PIA access runs out in a few months.

I got a NordVPN sub a year or two on a cheap deal. It has worked great for everything I needed.

I just wonder if you can use the VPN's that come with routers to do the same thing, or if they are only able to establish a VPN to your home network from a remote location.
