just turned broadcastify.com on about this. they just called a 5th alarm. Supposely multiple buildings on fire, and rumored (Im seeing on other forums) that a construction high rise crane collapsed.

There's a video on twitter of the crane going down so I can confirm there.

News is saying 400 N West Street, so east of the tracks which is better than the other side where all the stuff is on Glenwood.

Im hearing 5 bldgs have "some" fire, sprinklers are being allowed to handle at least 1 bldg. THey are actively searching at least 1 and maybe 2 bldgs, finding residents. At least 2 Ive heard (whole incident) treated for smoke inhalation.

It looks under control now from video. Was at the under-construction Metropolitan condo I guess?

nighthawk thanks. NyM410 thats what Im getting on reddit, plus the Links evacuated, and 3 other buildings plus those 2 suffering at least some fire damage.

They within past 10 mins called all fire fighters in Wake to stations, and just reported that the whole fire training class for Raleigh (like 50+ recruits) to draw equipment and report to the fire.

Garner, Cary, FV, Fairview, and HS have all sent engines to backup cover Raleigh fire stations.

Cary is activating reserve engines for internal coverage withe extra staff.

2 more bldgs have alarms going off now for ember spread fires.

All things considered, this could have been a lot worse so far. No known casualties as the moment and strong containment.

Will probably be drenching it for a while but given how windy it's been could have spread farther

Came to TWW just to see TWW coverage.

Insane. Hope that there are no fatalities or major injuries as a result. Interested to hear the cause of the fire.

I'm guessing either a homeless fire or some construction worker left a portable heater on. Probably never know for sure.

Dad called me and asked me about this. Apparently on the national circuits they're saying the fire started in an abandoned apartment building.

No.

Raleigh doesn't have abandoned apartment buildings. We're not Detroit.

There are large cinders all over downtown. And where I was was a decent clip from the actual fire.

I have a coworker that lives in an apartment next door. They haven't let them in yet to see if they have any smoke/water damage. I imagine they want to make sure the building is structurally safe first..?

Yep. All surrounding buildings are being inspected to make sure they're structurally safe. WRAL had some footage from SKY5 today and you could see inspectors in the Quorum Center checking windows and rooms.

Per the most recent press briefing no loss of life human or otherwise, and the only injury was the glass that the firefighter got in his chest.

The quorum center has a rough history. It was built 2006-2007 right before the economy collapsed. The units originally were listed for upwards of 750k. It was not sold out before the financial collapse in late 2008 and eventually many remaining units were sold at a fire sale for prices in the 250s. Today the prices are somewhere in the middle of the 2006 crazy high amount and recession crazy low. The only other thing I will say about Quorum center is it does not have a pool which is odd for a luxury high rise. It has that grass sun deck area but no pool or hot tub which I would think would be nice in a building like that. Now the side is melted off the building and the residents are going to be out of their units for months or longer. Many are rentals and if the landlord has shitty insurance they won't be getting any rent because a tenant is not going to pay rent for a condo they can not stay in. There could be foreclosures again.

You know, while I agree this construction is plenty safe once it's finished, that inbetween period seems to be awfully risky. I know there's basically no way to speed that up either, as you've got to have the frame before you can put up any of the fire-resistant elements. The gypsum board can't go up before all the utilities either

On a side note, I saw an interesting presentation this week on something that would be a more flame-resistant alternative to stick-built structures like this.

https://www.apawood.org/cross-laminated-timber

http://www.bkstructures.co.uk/solutions/products/cross-laminated-timber/

Very precise assembly methods, extremely rapid construction schedule (reducing the risk of what happened here). More of it might survive in time for the fire department to put it out too, just because of how thick the panels are.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRIPQ_q2iyY

I think mid-rise stick-built construction is viable, but holy shit maybe we need some different permitting limitations on it so it's not just a huge vulnerable pile of kindling set immediately adjacent to so many other structures. That CLT stuff isn't ready to go live yet either, but it looks like a promising material which could allow for cheaper mid-rise construction without being quite so fast to conflagrate.

I'm working on a CLT project in Austin and, despite being a very progressive city, they have no idea how to permit that kind of construction. It is promising though.

^^ In the DoD we're not considering using it until FY19 apparently. Lots of questions of how to connect it together and so on. I think it could save us a bundle by moving most of the construction labor off-site.

Another one going up in Overland Park, KS and the embers have lit numerous homes in a nearby neighborhood. This one hit 8 alarms!

http://www.kmbc.com/article/fire-rips-through-overland-park-apartment-complex/9158681

As of right now the count is 17 nearby homes damaged or destroyed by it. Wow.
