Ladies and Gents- We have moved beyond the realm of Hypotheticality.

Our Hypothesis has been tested time and again, peer-reviewed, and approved. We are officially a Theory (like gravity!)

Now, like I said in the Hypothetical thread, let's keep things honest in this one. Let's not talk about Sean Miller, Bill Cowher, or the reanimated corpse of Everett Case.

This is a time honored tradition in NC State Athletics for the last 25 years. The coaching search is the most fun we get to have as NC state basketball fans.

Now lets dust off the plane trackers, pop your popcorn, and settle in for another exciting NC State basketball coaching search!

Let the games begin!!

Just to recap your original post HOOPS for this non hypo version...

Alright, if (when) we fire Gott at the end of this season, who are our #1 candidates:

1.
Archie Miller- An alumnus and Great 3 point shooter in college.

2.
Billy Donovan- As far as I know, his plane is still circling RDU, waiting for Debbie's call.

3.
Bobby Huggins-I've heard whispers that Huggins is interested vis a vis his connection to Terry Henderson. Love his offense.

Im starting to think that it was definitely a mistaken leak initially... at first i thought it might have been intentionally, but the fact that Debbie waited until after UNC to make official announcement makes it seem like it was some idiot leaking this waaay too early.

Our fanbase is simply not patient enough to let an up-and-comer grow into the role.

We will end up with a P5 retread like Crean/Matta/Howland/Martin

I agree entirely with this, however- do you have any up and comers in mind? Its such a crap shoot going for an unknown- are there any known up and comers that we should be targeting?

I just don't want us to settle you know?

Please Archie! Please come to Raleigh. Please bring Morgan and family back to NC. Please take this talent and help them play defense. You would be a God here. You can coach here until you retire. K, Boeheim, Roy, Pitino, Larranga, Hamilton are all old. We can dominate the ACC for the next 20 years. Us and UVA. Let's do it. I'll drive to Dayton to help after you make another run in this year's Dance.

^^^ Well thats the problem with up and comers-- does GingaNinja or anybody else really know who the next up great up and comer will be? You could much more easily end up with a big Loser than the next big thing. That's the scary part of it.

I too would like to know some potential up and comer names to research. We do always talk about the "retreads".

Early names to watch from packinsider----> http://packinsider.com/2017/02/16/way-early-names-watch-nc-state-coaching-search-part-1/

Besides the usually names, they give some fresh names:

Will Wade (VCU)

Chris Holtzman (butler)

Would these guys be considered "up and comers"?

Wade seems like a good candidate, but a lot of coaches have done well at VCU with little to show for once leaving for a bigger program.

In a way but you have to wonder if Wade has had enough time or if that's still Smart's impact and influence.

Same with Butler

I'd rather have Creighton's guy than Butler's

BUt I like that you're posting what they say...thank God

doubtful, honestly. this done, most likely, because the info was previously leaked, it's obvious there will be no miracle turnaround, and Gott can be put out of misery every time he meets with the media. ending the speculation and rumors and pulling the plug was almost definitely done to just go ahead and keep things from spiraling worse.

the search will surely last into the NCAAT. it's gonna be a while, guys. let's buckle up

I like that Archie hasn't outright denied us or having interest in us. I'm completely sure that we've reached out to his agent and are doing whatever we can to get him here. It's going to depend on tOSU and IU jobs I think.

yeah i'm of the opinion that we need to go the up and comer route. of course it's maybe more risky/unknown but the pay off can be way better if we actually get a good coach. last search i think Yow made the comment that "high major experience" would be very important if not a requirement or something along those lines. i think that's misguided. almost any P5 coach that comes here is gonna have some serious baggage (Bruce Pearl) or concern about how good he actually is (like Gottfried last time around). i posted in the hypothetical thread...we aren't gonna be able to hire a "silver bullet" from the P5 ranks. the mid-major route is where we should be able to find a coach that can fit what we want as far as a program builder who can achieve long term success here.

Quote :

Gottfried was a retread. he worked out about as well (worse, really) as he did at his previous stop. which is kinda how these things go. he is who he is as a coach. just like any other retread.

^^So I guess as far as an up and comer goes, non p5 schools like vcu and Butler head coaches would be up and comer? Butler especially is pretty high profile job, even though it's a non p5, but they have a pretty high profile bball prestige.

But I guess they still get paid less than P5 and could jump ship for a paycheck alone.

Reading up on VCU coach, I am super intrigued. Packinsider gives a really nice summary of his genius.

up and comer is all relative, i guess. i used the term P5 but really that's more of a football term. in basketball it's really more of a P6 (including Big East)...so call it "power 6" or "high major" or whatever. the terminology doesn't matter. we could maybe steal a coach out of the Big East, i'm not saying we shouldn't try to if there are candidates there that we like. but realistically i think our sights should be set on the mid-major ranks. and of course there are exceptions...Gonzaga is a mid-major in name only and we obviously aren't getting Mark Few, for example.

as to specific names, i don't know any that haven't already been mentioned. hell, it's not mid-major...it's more of a low-major, but i wouldn't even be too mad about Moton from NCCU if get down to a second tier of options.

Gott was a coach at Alabama whose basketball program is a far, far, far cry from Ohio State, or Indiana, or UCLA. Lumping him in with Crean/Matta/Howland/Martin is not really that fair.

Nope, Yow will want high level experience. I doubt she considers non Div I type schools high level.

She has to hit a homerun here though.

NCCU is Div 1. they beat us a couple years ago. i'm definitely not saying he should be our #1. just a very intriguing option in case of emergency, i guess.

Martin's been at KState and SCar...hardly basketball powers. and Gott acheived a decent level of success at Bama. Howland has a decent thing going at low-pressure Miss St now. i'm not crazy about him as an option anyways, but i also am not convinced we could lure him or Martin away from their current gigs. then Matta and Crean we'd be waiting on to be fired. Matta, i could probably come around on (even if it's unrealistic)...but Crean has had some p disappointing results at Indiana overall.

i feel like you're setting yourself up for disappointment by trying to go all in on a coach with a big name that has been a big job before...because we likely won't get them. i don't particularly think that kinda coach is a real long term answer.

this is what i posted in the other thread. i feel like it's fair and reasonable and hell, it actually could help us land a good coach that might be here a long time

here's my opinion. our ideal coach is probably something like this...a younger coach, not afraid of competition on the court and recruiting trail, capable of actually coaching Xs and Os, capable of building a program and roster in a sustainable manner as opposed to a mash up of last minute recruits and transfers, and obviously...a coach that will win here and take us to heights we haven't seen in a long time.

that said, that coach - with a proven track record at a high major - might exist...but he very likely isn't leaving his current job for NC State. so you have to take a chance on somebody. it sucks because it's obviously risky. but if you find a coach with the qualities you like but he lacks experience, fuck it...take that chance.

that's where i'm at with our next hire. it very likely won't be somebody that is an automatic A+ hire and will immediately take us where we wanna go. maybe Archie is our best shot at that simply because he went to school here, and we definitely should gauge his interest. but if he turns us down, i'm all for taking a risk on a guy from the mid-major or low-major ranks that fits the our requirements (aside from experience) as opposed to a retread or a guy that just got fired from a P5 gig. it's a riskier move, but if it works out, it's a much better move for the overall future of the program. ultimately, there's not a silver bullet kinda hire we're gonna be able to make...Archie is the best shot at that, and he may not even wanna come here.

i don't really think that's a particularly controversial opinion, but then i see people throwing around Bruce Pearl and Tom Crean.

Looks like you may be into something with Levelle Moton. http://www.backingthepack.com/2017/2/15/14608658/profile-of-a-possible-savior-levelle-moton

I'm sure he's being discussed by Yow and co.. Already has local ties with high-schools and stuff. Would be easier transition to recruiting.

Nice name I had not even thought of!

Wow, nice name nobody has thought of Dmspack. And right under our noses.

I think there is no doubt he is on Debbie's list of candidates to interview.

Up and Comers:

1. Moton- UNCC
2. Wade- VCU
3. Holtzman- Butler

anybody else want to offer a name? I like talking about realistic coaching names like this.

Quote :
"Nope, Yow will want high level experience. I doubt she considers non Div I type schools high level.

I agree she will go through the P5 high level experience guys first, but we know how that went last time... Obviously I'd prefer Archie or Billy Donnovan, but we gotta have some lower level names of good quality in the back pocket

I like the idea of Scott Drew, but isn't he considered a little sleazy?

I mean im willing to take a little sleeze if he's gonna be a god, (ahem, Calipari), but not sure what Drew's track record is.

I know he brought in a couple 5 star blue chips from westchester academy in Winston, NC a couple years ago.

We'd all love to get an Archie Miller or a Chris Holtmann but I think we should be a little more realistic. Here are a few that I think are real possibilities to say yes:

Willie Hayes (Alabama A&M) - Yes they are 1-22 this year, but they were 14–16 in the 2014 season.

Jay Joyner (NC A&T) - They have double the wins of Alabama A&M, but the geographic proximity gives a built in recruiting advantage.

Tim Brando (Raycom) - Not a long coaching pedigree, but would no longer be calling games. Maybe wants to mix it up a little and hear the nylon song up close and personal.
