only 86 days till the 500!

big news of the week is monster energy as cup sponsor even tho there is no name yet. i am hoping for "Monster Energy Grand National Series" as monster energy cup is a already branded as a million dollar dirt bike race in October

I don't know how true it is, but I heard it might be called "Monster Energy Series Racing" and the word cup might be taken out of the name because there have been some times where Sprint Cup Series races were referred to as "Cup Races" without any reference to the current sponsor, and they don't want that.

Aw, poor NASCAR.

I view going from Sprint to Monster a significant step down for the Cup Series.

^^I was actually referring to the sponsors. NASCAR couldn't care less probably, but sponsors don't like it when they put their name on something and people don't mention it. It's no different than the winning driver saying "I would like to thank..."

They can remove Cup from the name, I'm still calling it Cup. Heck, I still call their top minor league series Busch occasionally.

shocking retirement news today

Quote :
"John Wes Townley will not race in 2017. A source says that the 27-year-old Watkinsville, Georgia native has decided to end his racing career and take some college courses. Townley also got engaged to girlfriend Laura Bird in the autumn of 2016 and his settling down includes not competing in NASCAR."

Surprises me. You think if this was planned he would've retired around Thanksgiving or at the Banquet.

This royally sucks for Joe Gibbs Racing. Lose one of the series' star drivers a month before Daytona and have to replace him and maybe replace sponsorship money as well.

Edit: Daniel Suarez getting promoted to Cup.

word on the street is they going to add "segments" to cup races. i'm sure i'm in the minority but i wouldnt mind if they parked the cars on pit road and let the tv guys ask the driver why they are slower than some other guys and whats their plan for the end of the race to fix it. maybe even a little shit talkin would happen, kinda like tony stewart 2011 homestead rain delay

The final nail in the coffin. I'm not too excited about this. I hope they at least leave the Daytona 500 alone and don't break that up into segments. NASCAR has the same problem that all sports not called football have, they aren't football. Once football starts a lot of people quit watching other sports.

^ Was explaining that to my wife at dinner after my dad called me about it. "NASCAR's biggest problem is they want to emulate football, and as fan interest has declined over the years their response is more and more gimmicks."

My dad's main complaint was we're going to have even more designed competition cautions to drag the races out more, which also provides a commercial break to the broadcaster. (Ironically, the NFL are talking about decreasing the number of commercials.)

The enhanced format consists of the following:
• Races will now consist of three stages, with championship implications in each stage.
• The top-10 finishers of the first two stages will be awarded additional championship points.
• The winner of the first two stages of each race will receive one playoff point, and the race winner will receive five playoff points. Each playoff point will be added to his or her reset total following race No. 26, if that competitor makes the playoffs.
• All playoff points will carry through to the end of the third round of the playoffs (Round of 8), with the Championship 4 racing straight-up at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the title.
• Championship points following the first two stages will be awarded on a descending scale, with the stage winner receiving 10 points, second receiving 9 points, and so on.
• The race winner following the final stage will now receive 40 points, second-place will receive 35, third-place 34, fourth-place 33, and so on."

the changes are good if you like the 36 race championship. if you win a lot of races and stages that will help you in November. also, after you get a win you still need to get segment and race wins so you can't go into test mode.

the segments will add a lot of pit stategery. if caution comes out with 10 laps before segment ends you might stay out to get that playoff point even if it screws you later in race. now they dont have to do BS debris cautions. i like the changes

^The last race is still a 4 car points reset go balls out race, so everything you did prior is forgotten. The only positive is the 3 race rounds w/ points resets are gone.

^the big difference is the bonus playoff points dont reset but regular points do. when chase starts there will be 7*26 = 182 points among the drivers. so a guy like truex may have half a race worth of points advantage on a paul menard every time points get reset every 3 weeks. the guys with only a small amount of bonus points will be more likely to have to win a chase race to advance

Whole thing reminds me of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFOvldn_IRw

I hate how they are so desperately trying to create this playoff format to be like other sports. Unless you get to the end of the year and start removing the cars that aren't in the chase anymore from the track it is stupid because either you have drivers that aren't in the race just getting out of the way, which makes it different than the first 26 races, or you have drivers mixing it up and causing accidents changing the outcome. Would be like the Super Bowl with New England vs. Atlanta while Cleveland is trying to practice on the side of the field not being used during the game.

Regards to everyone making money except small teams, Roush cut down to 2 cars, Petty cut down to 1, Biffle is without a ride which he's not some superstar but he's the highest-profile driver that's been shuffled out of the field in a way more common to Indycar or F1 rather than NASCAR in quite some time, and per Trackside, Monster's deal with Cup is reportedly 2.5x less than Sprint.
