I haven't really seen what his cabinet will look like, and I don't even know really what his campaign promises have been, other than a complete repudiation of HB2. He seems like he pretty much ran his campaign on social issues.

I wasn't fan of McCrory, but you have to admit, outside of the losses from HB2 his administration did a decent job of getting NC's economy on track.

Let's see what Roy Cooper has in store.

I am a bit concerned by his lack of transparency. When WRAL asked him about his emails and their FOIA requests, he said, "Oh I just wander down the hall and talk to people." Really, this is how we are going to run state government? Ugh. Granted I still think HB2 was the worst idea ever and McCrory has only himself to blame for taking a big bite of that shit sandwich, but Cooper doesn't amaze me at all.

Can we stop for a second and admire just how bad McCrory fucked himself. Trump won NC by 4.5, Burr beat Ross by 7 and this guy lost a gubernatorial election with unemployment the lowest its been in 8 years and after he was plastered all over the news responding to a massive exogenous event.

That has to be one of the worst campaigns in the history of politics.

But look, even if you take HB2 off the table, his administration was unfairly accosted as the worst pro-education/teacher governor in the history of the state, which I never really understood. Under Perdue, it seemed like everyone was happy with the status quo. McCrory comes in and actually increases teacher pay, and everybody's head explodes.

And then there was the coal ash, which really did him in for me - he should have at least made it look like he was trying to distance himself from Duke Energy. Instead he doubled down and acted like he was still on their board...

The difference is the economy (and tax base) was growing at 0.00000001% when Bev was Guv, and its been growing at 2+% under a majority of McCrory's term. Why is that hard to understand?

[Edited on November 9, 2016 at 10:39 AM. Reason : Even teachers weren't asking for a raise at the height of the recession]

Wish state employees would get more than a bone thrown at them right before the election. We have been getting shit on for quite a while but the only ones that get any screen time are teachers.

I know quite a few teachers, and every one of them shakes their head (and some cuss) every time the "teacher raise" is mentioned.

When he gets inaugurated, is he going to actually start doing his job again? That'd be a nice change.

Jim Hunt did that shit 4 times, and the teachers ate it up.

I think Roy Cooper is the first Democrat I've ever voted for.

McCrory stood up for a stupid, overreaching law, and then wasted money defending it. He had to be punished.

I'm in FL, so don't know much about NC politics...but has this race been called? I heard it was too close even a week later.

Don't you guys know any better from the "UNC LOSES" thread and the "President Hillary Clinton Credibility Watch" to do something like this before the game/election is over?

Did it?

Because as I recall, she declined to run for re-election because her approval ratings were in the toilet.

Oh, wait, I recalled correctly:

http://www.politico.com/story/2012/01/gov-perdue-wont-seek-reelection-072006

McCrory brought a lot of negative attention to North Carolina, passed a stupid, evil law, wasted money and political capital defending that law, and had exactly fuck-all to do with an economic recovery that was happening across the country. He killed the film/television industry in this state, fucked up the coal ash situation, and generally made an ass of himself at every opportunity.

I hope he loses and takes it really hard. Maybe starts hitting the bottle. His wife leaves him, and his kids tell him they're gay.

I only know a handful of teachers. 6 maybe. 2 of them had to leave NC mainly because of their terrible pay.

As much as I love the idea of sending McCrory packing, realistically I don't know how effective Cooper will be able to be as Gov with a firmly Republican GA to contend with.

^this

Even if they overturn his veto, we still need someone pumping the brakes on their agenda. Think of all the bills passed in less than 48 hours or with minimal media scrutiny because they gutted a previously benign bill and filled it with bullshit. Motorcycle vagina bill and HB2 both immediately jump to mind for me.

Vetoing both of those would have prolonged the legislative process, allowing the media to scrutinize and relitigate the bills, possibly altering the course of those bills (or possibly not, better than a rubber stamp tho).

Nah, the courts won't let it happen. They do have a say.

Repubs just can't have their way.

Cooper won, McCrory will bitch and sue but theres nothing he can do really other than appeal...which does nothing.
Cooper is 8000 votes or more ahead

Additionally:

Apparently (as I understand it) one of the board members implicated the SBOE IT Director in producing a majority of the paperwork involved in the protests. Allegedly a portion of the board seemed to either be aware this was the case or directed the IT director to do so?

I mean, I would hope not? But I dunno, I haven't lived in NC for years and don't follow the local politics.

I mean, he doesn't ACTUALLY believe that he lost by that margin due to fraud, does he? Why else would he drag this thing on?

If Bladen county could be responsible for hundreds of cases of voter fraud and there are 30 other counties investigating similar issues, then it's plausible that McRory did lose the entire state due to voter fraud.

There was a WRAL article maybe two months ago that did some fact checking on teacher pay, then the NC GOP released a rebuttal, and their rebuttal discussed the raise that I mentioned. But hey I don't teach in NC, and my dad has been retired for a while now so this didn't affect him (although the lack of raises affected him back in the day).

Look I'm not trying to stand here and say the NC GOP and McCrory did a great job with the time they've had in charge. I just thought, based on what I've heard and read, that teachers got a raise when under Perdue, they didn't. No need to call me a hack for that.

I'm not sad to see McCrory go. I just don't know anything about Cooper. Other than he hates HB2.

Well, that's not all you know. You know that Roy Cooper has been AG for a while, which if nothing else tells you that statewide people have liked him enough to vote for him several times. Specifically, they've done it four times, each by a wider margin.

So you know that. You also know that no massive scandals have attached to him, nor any national embarrassments.

I thought he was opposed to HB2? He's had several opportunities to support bills repealing the law, but continually opposes them just for political purposes.

Really awful start to his term.
Quote :
"HB 186 was filed last week by a mix of Republican and Democratic House members. It would repeal HB2 and allow cities and counties to adopt their own anti-discrimination protections, as Charlotte did a year ago in allowing people to use the public restroom that fits their gender identity rather than their sex at birth – before HB2 blocked that law. Under HB 186, however, local governments would not be able to extend anti-discrimination protections to privately owned restrooms, only to city-run facilities.
The new bill would allow opponents of extended protections to vote on them through referendum elections if they collect enough voter signatures. Cooper issued a statement and video on Sunday opposing the referendum provision

With the hysterical fear by the left of the Trump administration (and any non-D administration before that), you would think they would be more supportive of non-centralized power. But that would require the left to actually be consistent in their logic.
