They are running the fiber in front of my house right now. For those that have it in the triangle, what are the costs and options? I can't seem to find a clear cut answer. It looks like $70 a month. I find it hard to believe they don't have lower tiers.
5/26/2016 3:33:12 PM
^ wouldn't be worth it to run fiber if you could get lower tiers. Also I think with AT&T's $70/month plan you're consenting to them tracking all your activity for advertising right? $90 without tracking I think?
5/26/2016 3:38:35 PM
AT&T Gigapower is definitely more expensive than TWC. When i cancelled AT&t to switch to TWC (their 300Mbps was the same price as AT&T's 50Mb), they transferred me to a guy that was able to match TWC's pricing on their 50Mb tier (which is one of TWCs cheaper plans). Also the Gigapower modem/router had no DMZ mode, and flakey port forwarding if this is a consideration, and it had no way of using a custom DNS server on the router settings. Another thing to keep in mind is that AT&T, for their advertised prices, scans all your network traffic to sell to advertisers, you have to pay $30 to opt out of this (read the fine print).

It's $70 per month for the first year then it jumps to $100 per month (I think). It's an extra $30 per month if you don't want a data cap. You don't get the promotional rate at all if you don't consent to tracking and injection of targeted ads. You also share bandwidth with your TV which is something to keep in mind if you have multiple TVs going at the same time. You're also locked into a yearly contract with a hefty early termination fee.Personally, I think it's a bad deal.

I just signed up they ran the fiber to my house wednesday and will be doing the install tomorrow. I only signed up for internet for now will look into TV come football season. $70 dollars a month with a lifetime price guarantee and dropped to $60 for going with paperless billing. Will have to speed test it once I get everything up and running. Will see how the data cap goes but adding tv later removes that data cap so thats probably what will happen at some point anyways.
5/27/2016 8:25:19 AM
Where do you live?
5/27/2016 9:20:59 AM
$60 with paperless? Awesome. Even with taxes, that would be less than my Road Runner.
5/27/2016 11:34:43 AM
Yeah its was one of those Ill believe it when I see the bill sorta things haha. I just moved out towards wendell.

At our lake house, I can get 3 Meg DSL with 512k upload speed for $40 a month. Quite a steal...

Here's a pic from AT&T installing fiber in my yard. It's a shame it's not Google.https://goo.gl/photos/qeMb4AhMzRU6PxjU9[Edited on May 31, 2016 at 6:08 PM. Reason : Google links, how do they work?]

5/31/2016 6:22:13 PM
Luckily mine is coming up my side yard so the only large hole they are gonna have to dig is to go under my neighbors driveway.
6/1/2016 8:13:33 AM
They pulled the fiber for my install off the pole. I gave my dad strict instructions to have them run through the existing conduit (was out of town) and of course they cut into my fucking siding and made a garbage surface mount. The trash quality of the install was only second to dish network. I've had the service almost a year with no hiccups, but my tenants wouldn't notice. They only use wireless for browsing and netflix.

Anyone able to get to over 150 Mbps on WiFi with Gigapower? I get 600+ when connected directly to the router but not on WiFi.Also, the price does not change after 12 months, the contract goes out. The price is guaranteed for 24 months.https://www.att.com/shop/internet/gigapower.html1 Gig InternetInternet speeds up to 1Gbps$29 a month ongoing discount for InternetWaived installation ($99 value) and equipment fee ($7/mo. value)2-year price guarantee with qualifying service (includes wireless)[Edited on July 27, 2016 at 3:26 PM. ^ What's your WiFi hardware? You're probably going to have to drop some coin to do better than 150.
7/28/2016 9:27:25 AM
I was able to get ~400mbps via wifi on my N laptop using a pretty cheap tp-link router and stock firmware. never got more than 650mbps on a wired connection though
7/28/2016 9:39:17 AM
They will fuck your bill up somehow. Do not believe anything that their ads say they do what they want and you have to fight like hell to get it fixed. It reminds me of dealing with Sprint PCS in the early 2000s.
7/28/2016 9:48:39 AM
It has been down in my neighborhood since yesterday afternoon at least. Was down when I left this morning better be back up by the time I get home!

^ I have the RT-AC68U and can get the 300Mbps max from my TWC connection (on AC).
8/4/2016 1:08:20 PM
I had my router set to choose a channel automatically, but I chose a manual channel based on site scan and it increased my b/g/n speeds by 5x (20Mbps -> 100 Mbps).I also recently moved to an area with substantially fewer wireless networks. Kind of weird if more people reduced their wifi network power output, we'd all probably be able to get faster wifi speeds...
8/5/2016 1:11:51 PM
Does AT&T supply a router?
8/5/2016 1:18:32 PM
For Uverse they do, and the ATT guy said it was the same one for gigapower. The uverse router kinda sucked though.
8/5/2016 6:33:56 PM
Ugh I was hoping it was going to be a better router.

I consistently get over 200 mbps on TWC standard package now. I am not sure if anything faster than that would be noticeable, especially considering that most sites have a shitty response/load time.
8/15/2016 10:34:42 PM
There's webpage load times, and there's file download times.I don't have Gigapower just yet, but you're deluding yourself by equating TWCs internet service to fiber.[Edited on August 16, 2016 at 12:34 AM. A lot depends on routes too. I swear a lot of websites loaded faster on my 45mbps att service compared to 300mbps time warner, but I have no real proof. Ive also found att MUCH more willing to play ball with negotiating prices.
8/16/2016 3:00:45 AM
Google is coming through just a couple of miles from me. Apparently I am supposed to get service soon.

AT&T just lit up the fiber in my neighborhood. They have sales staff going door-to-door trying to get people to sign up. They ones I spoke with are throwing out numbers that I'm skeptical about and it's been hard to pin down the details of their sales pitch. They told me:$135/month for two years locked in plus taxes and feesfor 1 gbps internetunspecified U-Verse HD TV servicefree install which includes up to 6 network drops inside the house ( )no extra HD feesno equipment fees with whole-house DVR options for up to 2 TVs. I think it's an extra $7 per month per TV for additional TVsEarly termination fee for the first year ( $15 fee per month remaining)Can cancel service at no cost in first 30 daysAnyone had experience with the door-to-door folks? I'd like to hear from you if you have. Their numbers don't match AT&Ts shitty, slow website. Plus, some of what they're promising seems too good to be true. If they'll really do six network drops in my house as part of the free install, that's worth at least $600 right there.
8/31/2016 5:59:11 PM
Did they actually run fiber to your house or just to those boxes near the road?
8/31/2016 6:16:22 PM
They wont run fiber to the house unless I sign up for service. Nevertheless, the fiber is on my property. I posed a pic of the neighborhood install further up on this page.[Edited on August 31, 2016 at 6:52 PM. Reason : ]
8/31/2016 6:50:06 PM
So it was 4ish months between them laying the fiber and offering service?
9/1/2016 9:56:20 AM
Something like that. Being that I haven't signed up, I don't know when they're doing installations so it could be longer.
9/1/2016 10:20:06 AM
Yeah the actual network drops I wouldnt be sure on. I believe they said like 4-6 boxes but if the room wasnt already wired it would be a wireless box. I only have the internet service currently gonna see how football season goes without cable for a while.
9/1/2016 12:42:27 PM
looks like it's available at my house now, but damn, $175 is ridiculous to opt out of the browsing data collection "premier" pricing
