My wife's job is relocating back to NC three years after we left Raleigh for said job. The job will now be in King's Mountain. Just looking at the map, we are targeting Gastonia as a place to live since it seems to be an even split between KM and Charlotte as far as commuting goes. I would appreciate any pro tips from those of you with knowledge of the area. We are early 30s with one infant child if that helps paint the picture.

I'm trying not to sound like a smart ass in Chit Chit, but that whole area is a dump.My cousins lived in KM for years and we'd visit each year and it was like going back in time. It's a really desolate area. Not to offend some others here, but I'd avoid Gastonia too. They call it Trashtonia for a reason. Belmont is up-in-coming... and the home prices show it.

Duke Energy owns a large training facility in King's Mountain. That is about the extent of my knowledge.

My sister lived in Gastonia for a while like 17 years ago for maybe 4 months before she got fed up. It was a shithole then so I will just assume it is still a shit hole until proven otherwise. I was also like in middle school at the time so this is definitely pretty quality information.

I grew up in Gastonia. It's very much a "train tracks" town. If you grow up on one side of the tracks it's not a bad place and has some decent schools. The other side is generally poor and has higher crime. I'd highly recommend limiting your search to the quadrant of of the county that is east of Hwy 321 and south of I-85. I've heard parts of Mt. Holly and Dallas are starting to look nice, but I haven't been in that area in years. I've also heard good things about Belmont. I grew up near Union Road/Gaston Day School. It's not a bad spot.

Move to Belmont. We moved to Belmont 5 years ago from Raleigh and we love it. Schools in Belmont are great, and the home prices have been steadily increasing. I think it's probably the closest town to uptown Charlotte. If you do move to Gastonia, try to stay close to the Country Club.
