I haven't seen the actual trailer yet, but as stated by the director:-Its not a direct sequel-Its not a prequelSupposedly its related to Cloverfield in some indirect way, but they are just teasing details right now.

I feel like this is more of we had 2 years of this movie being hid behind Star Wars, why don't we add some rumble and roars to it and call it Cloverfield. Which i'm completely OK with based on Cloverfield being one of the best monster movies in the past 15-20 years IMO.
1/15/2016 9:59:04 AM
OH THIS IS HOW YOU DO A TRAILER!Does it give too much away? It looks like it gives away the first act. Is it better to give away a ton of 1 act or some of all 3 acts?

the village was a period romance piece. Nothing about this trailer screams old timey and romance.I am honestly getting the vibe of a Suspense Thriller by Hitchcock or Carpenter.

glad they don't appear to be going for the Blair Witch, people-say-"Oh My God"-for-an-hour, style of the first one.

Cloverfield was ok. Certainly enjoyed watching it but had no desire to ever watch it again. There is not even the slightest hint that this movie is in any way related besides the name.

Saw this last night. Really good. John Goodman was incredible. For a movie with only three people that were confined to a bunker for most of the time, it is very atmospheric with some great storytelling. As far as I can tell, it had absolutely nothing to do with the first Cloverfield movie.
3/12/2016 12:14:47 PM
thoroughly enjoyed
3/15/2016 11:31:42 PM
I really enjoyed Cloverfield, and this -- while completely different -- was awesome.
3/16/2016 10:19:03 AM
I really enjoyed the movie, and John Goodman did an incredible job. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending, although it almost had the feeling of some video games where you get to the end and beat the level boss only to find there's an even bigger more badass boss waiting, and additional levels you didn't know about waiting.SPOILER ALERT:Was Emmett an accomplice to Howard with keeping Meghan in the bunker? He admitted to helping Howard build the bunker, and the polaroid picture of Howard with Meghan must have been taken by someone else. I felt like Emmett conveniently pointed out that the girl in the picture was someone his sister went to school with that disappeared. Emmett was also very quick to volunteer to climb through the ventilation shaft to go into that room to fix the air unit; Howard didn't seem all that concerned and pointed out that Emmett would never make it through with his arm in the sling. Did Emmett actually kill Meghan and then jam the door to hide the evidence? The hatch was locked from the inside, the door was jammed from the rest of the room, and Howard definitely wasn't fitting through the ventilation shaft.
4/5/2016 11:27:47 PM
Now that mention it, I didn't quite get the whole thing with Meghan. So was Howard just a murderer and used his bunker to kill her way before any of the alien stuff started?
4/6/2016 8:59:12 AM
SPOILZ:That was one thing our group noticed (and disliked) about the movie. The girl who John Goodman locked up previously (supposedly) was used as a plot device to make the current group want to escape; however, it was set up as a mystery which they never resolve. You can make certain assumptions, but that whole story line felt very unresolved and somewhat unnecessary.I really enjoyed the movie, though. The end where every crazy thing John Goodman said came true made for a bit of a shock. That being said, I cannot help but notice the _enormous_ shift in tone outside the bunker was a bit jarring. If the movie did not have "Cloverfield" in the title, my reaction would have been "What the literal fuck?" For people who did not see the original movie, I am going to guess that was their actual reaction.[Edited on April 6, 2016 at 10:05 AM. Reason : ]

I wonder why Howard didn't have a radio or anything that could receive transmissions? The truck radio was picking stuff up not too far away and you'd think that a satellite tech from the Navy would be tech savvy enough to have an antenna that could pick things up. Why would he not want to remain up to date one what is going on?
4/6/2016 1:18:19 PM
^^ If that were true than the idea of aliens invading should not have seemed so outlandish to the characters in at least one of the movies, unless they're happening at the same exact timeI'm not arguing in either direction actually, but I don't think it's clear either direction[Edited on April 6, 2016 at 1:34 PM. In the original Cloverfield, the monster came from the depths of the ocean. So no one truly knew of its alien origins. To the characters, that would have been a random sea monster, certainly different than an alien invasion. Sea monsters have been a human fear since the beginning of time. There is all sorts of viral marketing hinting at Clover's true origin, though. As I recall, the final scene from 'Cloverfield' was the vacation camcorder flashback, and it shows a random space debris falling into the ocean; the assumption here is that the alien object was related to the creation of Clover, or maybe even Clover itself.

As I understand it though, it's not in the same universe as Cloverfield; it's a parallel one, a spiritual successor. IIRC, there's no talk about the attack on NY.
4/7/2016 11:52:14 AM
Yeah in the scene after the credits while they are at Coney Island, if you look in the background you see something splash in the water. Originally everyone thought it was an egg or something that birthed the giant monster but I read somewhere else that it was actually some kind of satellite associated with the monster in some way. So that implies the monster was an alien. Also, Howard said he worked with satellites in the Navy -- so perhaps that whole satellite deal is how he knew something was coming.
4/7/2016 12:23:33 PM
My point is simply that there is no real evidence that the characters in either movie are aware of the events from the other. So the only plausible argument is that the two events are going on at the exact same time.Which brings back to my main point, which is that it does not "go without saying" that the two movies are part of the same universe. It's a question that's up for debate unless you want to present anything that makes it more clear than anyone has mentioned so far
4/7/2016 12:35:25 PM
Looks like there was a lot of back and forth during development on exactly what this movie was supposed to be. Apparently, they have settled on a "spiritual successor" and not a sequel or even the same universe. From wiki:
