It's going to be a long time before most of us get social security, and likely that none of us will get it. However, for all of the folks that are currently on it, I'm a little confused. They aren't getting a cost of living increase because of inflation, or lack thereof - primarily gas.But when the government or whoever releases those numbers, they always exclude gas and food and a few other things from the actual inflation numbers. So how is it that they can discount fluctuations in gas and food when it comes to reporting actual inflation, but use gas and the primary reason for no cost of living increase for seniors on social security?

Social Security adjustments are based on CPI, which includes gas and food prices. Core inflation (the number usually being referred to when talking about inflation) doesn't include gas and food prices.
