Freedom > children.

No sense even debating it once that became clear after Sandy Hook. And that's not anti-gun or pro-gun... just the country's reality.

I was actually starting to feel guilty about polishing off my nail salon's wine stash and having tequila for lunch today.

But mass shooters have a way of putting things in perspective.

Now I'm bout to take a nap before football. Everything is okay.

Maybe if these monsters who shoot up places were punished with death by torture, they would think twice before carrying out their diabolical plans. They know they can plead insanity and then lead a cushy life in an insane asylum and never have any responsibilities.

From http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/10/01/umpqua-gunman-id-d-as-chris-harper-mercer.html:

Quote :
"In a blog linked to that identity, Harper-Mercer expressed admiration for Roanoke shooter Vester Flanagan.

People "like him have nothing left to live for," Harper-Mercer wrote on August 31. "On an interesting note, I have noticed that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. ... A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more you're in the limelight. ""

Yet the news will likely continue to plaster his face all over and continue to give these people just what they were looking for.

Just like sandy hook, Lafayette, and Charleston, this Oregon shooter is from a family of gun nuts.

This is probably a spurious correlation, but we'll have enough data soon to throw at a machine learning system to see if there are connections our puny human brains can't perceive...

Have you changed your tune on the media not sensationalizing these psychopaths? Or do you still think "we should hear their story!"

It's not the media that sensationalizes them, it's society... It's me and you. It's ctnz1 for making this thread, and you for posting in it.

The media could form a pact amongst themselves to not talk about it, but with social media it would get talked about no matter what.

Also, I think you have me confused with someone else, I don't think I've ever said we MUST hear their story...?

I might have mixed up you agreeing with UJustWait basically saying that their stories need to be heard, we need to plaster them on the news to understand their motives

But society wouldn't sensationalize something that isn't plastered all over the media. Do you think society sensationalized the sniper at the University of Texas back in the 60s? obviously not (nearly as much) because media wasn't as rampant

[Edited on October 2, 2015 at 12:26 AM. Reason : i do apologize for calling you out on UJustWait's viewpoint]

Problem is half of the time these evil pieces of shit plan on killing themselves.

I think it's kind of both. I think the coverage does encourage other mass shooters to some extent, though it is difficult to imagine the thought/logic behind a suicidal shooting spree.

Damn, that thread had to be him...that's nuts...but others on there had a game plan in their head too which makes this more depressing...that there are so many people out there with mental health issues and we have no way to know.

Doesn't really matchup with the government/media spin that he did it when he asked about Christianity.

The goal is not for the media to not talk about it, the goal is for the media to report on the crime and the victims, but not sensationalize the shooter or provide an outlet for their manifesto. Each time the media turns the shooter into a celebrity, they encourage another shooter. The media can continue to report about a shooting, even in ridiculous sensationalized 24/7 coverage, without giving the shooter the attention they want

media is the contagion for suicide clusters
http://psycnet.apa.org/psycinfo/1990-98190-018
http://abs.sagepub.com/content/46/9/1269.short

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1749-6632.2001.tb05807.x/abstract?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false
etc...

the CDC after studying the problem recommended tempered media coverage, which is effective at stopping or limiting suicide clusters:

http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/00048679309075828
etc...

school shootings are the same phenomenon as suicide clusters
School Shooting as a Culturally Enforced Way of Expressing Suicidal Hostile Intentions
http://jaapl.org/content/36/4/544.short

Quote :
"I have watched in horror with most of America as the stories of the Chardon High School and Oikos University shootings unfolded. But my horror was twofold. The first misery came as I heard the names and numbers of victims and thought about the pain they and their families will endure for the rest of their lives. The second dose came as I held my breath, hoping and praying the media wouldn’t amplify the violence.

But they did.

They did exactly what was needed to influence the next perpetrator to lock and load.
1. They named the shooter.
2. They described his characteristics.
3. They detailed the crime.
4. They numbered the victims.
5. They ranked him against other “successful” attackers.

School shootings are a contagion. And the media are consistent accomplices in most every one of them.

There’s really no useful debate on the point. The consensus of social scientists since David Phillips’ groundbreaking work in 1974 is that highly publicized stories of deviant and dangerous behavior influences copycat incidents. Phillips’ and scores of subsequent studies showed, for example, that suicide rates spike in the week after an inappropriately publicized celebrity suicide. Contrast this trend with no increase in suicides in the week following a media strike that unintentionally suppresses such coverage.

The same is true of school massacres."

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/crucial-conversations/201204/the-media-is-accomplice-in-school-shootings

America’s Foremost Criminal Profiler Warns Media Coverage Causes School Shootings

details of suicides used to be widely reported. and they spawned increased suicides in the days and weeks following. suicides are rarely newsworthy now because media adopted the CDC recommendations on how to report them.

here are guidelines for reporting on suicide, similar guidelines are needed for school shootings

none of this suggests "IGNORING IT" or that "IGNORING IT WILL MAKE IT GO AWAY", it provides suggestions for responsible reporting since studies have shown that the media can be a contagion and that responsible reporting is effective at stopping that contagion.

[Edited on October 2, 2015 at 9:26 AM. Reason : it's a reasonable and obvious response that we need]
