...ogling the occasional hot construction worker after you drive past him.

Also for things like looking to see if there are cars beside you while driving. Wouldn't expect a woman driver to realize that though.

I only trust them for reverse, not for seeing stuff beside me. I turn my head for that.

Only a drivers side mirror is required by law

wait, you use side view mirrors for driving in reverse, but turn around to see cars beside you? you're doing it backwards.

gurl, let me drive you around.

Yeah, I take one look to check it's clear behind me and then I use my side mirror to look at the ground and make sure the car's going where it's supposed to.

I'm excellent in reverse.

Untrue. If the car comes equipped with a passenger side mirror and it is damaged or removed it will not pass inspection. A fact I learned the hard way a few years back.

Ehh, if you remove the base of the mirror and put a cover on, it passes.
Ran a previous car that way for years.

Main purpose of side view mirrors is NOT for reversing.

It's the main thing they're good for. It's why they automatically tilt down when you reverse in fancy cars.

Truck drivers don't use a stupid rear view mirror.

Incidentally, the rear view mirror is for ogling the man in the car behind you while you wait at a light.

If someone is blinding me with their headlights, I will turn my side mirrors to face them fully so they blind themselves and back off.

bullshit, it's how you see where your tires are while reversing and they are how you make sure you are close enough to the curb when backing into a parallel parking spot

I think the MAIN purpose is to see behind/beside you while driving forward.

you can drive forward without your side mirrors easier than you can parallel park and backup without them

sure, if you never use an interstate/multi-lane highway.

also, you'll be breaking the law.

[Edited on August 14, 2015 at 4:11 PM. Reason : the only time i absolutely need a side mirror when in reverse is if im hauling/towing and can't see]

Concentrate on the word "main". If you calculated reversing as a percentage of the amount of time you drive, it is no more than 5%.

When I reverse, I tend to not use mirrors, and actually turn my whole torso and look back. Have heard of too many people getting into accidents while reversing cuz they were using mirrors, whether side or rear view.

So you stare at your side view mirrors the other 95% of the time?

I don't know about ya'll terrible drivers, buy my eyes are constantly darting back and forth from road to rear view to side views to road. Because there are some shitty drivers out there.

I glance at my rearview instinctively whenever I'm breaking...for a light, to turn right/left, whatever. It has saved me from being rear ended and from getting crushed by a car trying to pass on a double yellow when I was slowing down to turn left (with my left turn signal on). And, of course, I randomly check it for police, too.

I don't know how much I check my side view mirrors. I just don't trust them for anything but reverse. I didn't have them placed correctly when I started driving so I learned to turn my head no matter what.

I try to use speed to my advantage. If you're the fastest one on the road, you only have to worry about what's in front of you. And flying through stoplights minimizes the amount of time in the intersection where you might get hit.

you should turn instead of using rear view mirror, but you still have to use your side mirrors for tight spots or parallel parking

shenanigans.

1) you're trying to aim a tiny square of reflected light into their eyes. you probably can't aim like that with lights beaming straight to your eyes

2) if you've somehow aimed it correctly, the tailgater would simply need to move left or right by a foot to avoid the reflection

I turned my side view and rear view mirrors all askew to see how much it bothered me on my drive. The rear view was a problem right away. It seems I look in it continuously while I'm looking forward at the road--probably just cause it's there. But I only noticed my side view once. It was the left one--I didn't try to look at the right one at all.

I haven't had a driver's-side mirror in like 2 years...it just mysteriously disappeared at some random point.

So I just rotate my head when I need to look in that area.
