Looks like the entire cast of Django just about! Looks interesting and very light.

I hope there are some scenes in landscape without snow.

For anyone that's a fan of the old Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, Ennio Morricone is the one scoring this film. Looking forward to it.

Keep making assumptions.

I was actually pretty excited to see Waltz and DiCaprio in the same movie. I a big Waltz fan. Which is why I was so disappointed in the latest Bond movie.

What? I assumed it was going to be good b/c of hype and the actors in it? I don't get your point.

Every time I think about how awful that movie was a little part of me dies. So disappointing.

For those in Raleigh, the AMC at Southpoint will be playing the 70mm road show version of this.

Halfway through the movie. it is REALLY long. Almost 2 hours and 45 minutes. A LOT of talking in this one. Lots. I think QT must be paid per word.

Went to see the 70mm roadshow version at Southpoint today. Was great until the last 10 minutes of the film when the movie stopped completely, the screen went black for a minute or two, and then it came back on with what looked more like a digital projection.

Film was good though, not great, but good. I wish he'd done something with more locations in it, as other than the tim period & clothing it didn't really feel much like a western outside of the first 25-30 minutes, but that's kind of what you get with Tarantino.

The Southpoint screening I went to had poor frame matting and some pretty noticeable shudder for most of the first half. Not surprising with the super old equipment, but still annoying.

Exact same thing happened tonight. I'm guessing that's just how they show the movie now there... Also noticed a lot of shaking in the beginning. Kind of sucks that it's your only option in the state.

I suggest getting there early as the thing was clearly packed on a Monday afternoon. We had to sit in the 2nd row.

The film itself is roughly what I expected. It's typical Tarantino, but you never really have a reason to get invested in the characters so the violence feels extra gratuitous.

Liked it. Good, not great. Saw it at the Arclight in Hollywood and even there the intermittent sprocket was a little loose (really only noticeable on title screens). Still, very glad I saw it on 70.

Why are there so many problems with the 70mm showings? Is it because the equipment is so old?

I thought it was entertaining, but at times I felt like it was really dragging.

Funny.

6/10

Though at this point QT must just be trolling with the gratuitous use of nigger. Seems like he's just crowbarring it into lines that don't need it.

I, too, think of this movie as good but not great. I really liked the first half but then the second half sank into the typical QT unnecessary shoot-em-up. Kurt Russell and Jenner Jason Leigh were all fantastic. Michael Madsen and Tim Roth were not (though I don't blame Roth as I got the feeling that the part was meant for Christoph Waltz and he was just filling in).

Of the 8 QT films less Jackie Brown because I haven't seen it:

Can watch over and over and over again
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs

Like them enough to view again but not frequently
Inglorious Basterds
Kill Bill
Hateful Eight

Glad I saw it but probably won't bother watching a second time
Hateful Eight
Django Unchained
Death Proof

OK, lemme just get this off of my chest because it does bother me from time to time.

So, regarding Tarantino and his pretty amazing string of great movies:

He is of course a master at dialogue and putting together a pretty amazing script, but in terms of his direction, nearly every frame in any of his movies is copied from something classic out of a different Genre. So then, is this like a pink elephant in the room that nobody wants to mention or is he pretty open and honest about the fact that he lifts all of his camera work from older movies?

Everyone talks about it all the time. He talks about it all the time. From the moment he got famous, he's talked about is the history of cinema and how it's influenced his work, stemming from his days working at Video Archives.

I liked it but there aren't any memorable scenes in it for me like his other movies. Not really quotable.

Spike Lee was right. QT just likes the n word a lot. I get the time period but this is a thing for Quentin now.

Someone was complaining to me about there are no likable characters?... Um the movie is called "hateful eight"

Has Micheal Madsen (sp?) played a good guy in anything. Who they fooling?

I actually liked the first half of the movie before the gory fest.

The movie is a sublet critique on race relations .... Sort of.

All his other movies have someone you can root for. Even in Reservoir Dogs you feel sympathetic with many of the characters. But I just didn't really give a shit about anyone in here. Therefore nothing was on the line and the end feel a bit pointless.

I was hoping after Django that this one would be more of a true western. I really liked the first 30 minutes or so before they got to the cabin, but kept hoping they'd leave the cabin and actually get to Red Rock at some point.

One thing about QT is that he is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to his films. He really only has 1 or 2 that everyone loves to watch over and over again. The rest are hit or miss, albeit they are all decent and well-made.

Like Death Proof. I fucking love that film, and it is probably one of my favorite QT films, but a lot of people don't like it. And I just don't get the hate. It had an amazing all-female cast and practical effects long before people were raging about those things in today's world. It also had probably one of QT's best villain's played by Kurt fucking Russell.

And then there is Django, a film that a bunch of people liked that I could never sit through again. What frustrates me so much about Django is that DiCaprio's character is clearly, at least to me, the best part of that film, but it takes so long to get to him and then we don't really have that much time with him on screen. It just seems like poor decision making.

it's always interesting to see what people consider their favorite QT films and which ones they enjoy seeing again and again.

I'm opposite of you. I could watch Django again and again but I was also really late to the game and didn't see it until long after it was out on disc.

But I watched both Kill Bills a few weeks back and probably won't ever voluntarily watch them again. And on Inglorious Basterds i find myself watching through the pub chapter and then turning it off.

***Spoilers***

I found myself rooting for Kurt Russell. I really liked his character. I also liked O.B., so when both of them died just after intermission I was really pissed off.

Why isn't O.B. counted as part of the 8? Because he wasn't hated, or because as an audience member you could trust him? Including Jody, there were 10 total characters in the cabin.
