People have always been fascinated by the power of nature. Specifically, the parts of it powerful enough to kill them.

Can't speak for everybody, but for me...

1) When I was a kid, I was big into nature and the ocean in particular, so I started watching it then. Every age group can find something appealing in shark week, which is rare. Kids like watching sharks. Adults like watching sharks and learning shit. Weird people like my mom like hearing gruesome stories of things that scare them.
2) Also when I was a kid, shark week usually coincided with the annual beach trip, so it is linked to a lot of happy memories
3) At least the last time I saw it, shark week still provided a mix of silly and informative that appeals to me (and, apparently, lots of other people)
4) Nowadays, with Discovery, History, TLC, and National Geographic being dominated by insipid reality shows or submoronic alien/ghost/conspiracy bullshit, shark week represents just about the only time of year when you can see actual fucking informational programming.

I love nature documentaries, but I guess the hype around Shark Week just annoys me.

Except last year when they ran a lot of fake BS "documentaries" that contained a healthy dose of fiction.

You obviously haven't watched Shark Week in a few years.

I just always enjoyed getting stoned and drunk and watching the sharks all week. Don't know about y'all upity dudes with your "educational" requirements.

yeah my issue with shark week is that some of the programming seems sensationalized or outright dumb and untrue (that Megaladon shit last year or two years ago). i'm at the beach on vacation this week and have watched some of it - some of it is a bit interesting, but some of it just makes me

and this is a turn off for me as well:

Quote :
"Sometimes Shark Week shows do feature scientists — but even then, problems sometimes arise. Some Shark Week producers have misled scientists to get them to participate in documentaries, and later edited their interview responses to make it seem like they were responding to totally separate questions that no serious scientist would address."

although i do agree with this:

I went to the aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores today. If you haven't been they have a massive tank with 8 sharks (as well as several other awesome fish) in it. They do dive shows, and today the show was about safety when swimming in the ocean. They were trying to get people to realize that sharks, normally, aren't just going to attack you. They gave the normal safety tips, but I guess it's fitting with all the attacks happening.

I thought I read that because of the huge backlash, they were getting rid of the fake shit. The one where they put an accelerometer on a mako shark was awesome
