What are some unwritten rules?- (Baseball) If you show up the pitcher by galavanting around the bases after a homerun, or flip your bat flamboyantly, your teammate is going to get beaned- (Basketball) If you commit a hard/dirty foul on another player, you will get fouled hard/dirty by one of their playersThere are all of these unwritten rules that are part of the game (cliche-fest) but what are some more?

running up the score when there is no doubt left in the game is generally an asshat thing to do in all sports

There are dozens for baseball. Here are a few more:You don't steal bases when you are blowing out the other team. You don't bunt for a hit during the later innings of a no-hitter/perfect game.Pitchers should avoid eye contact with hitter after they strike the hitter out, especially young pitchers and veteran hitters. In a blowout, you don't take out the 2nd baseman/catcher, etc on slides. Basically you are not allowed to be aggressive if the game is over. Applies to all sports for the most part.

nvm ^ beat me to mine.i'm not sure if it's really an "unwritten rule" or if it's just sticking up for your teammates, but in football and hockey you don't take cheap shots on the QB or goalie - if you do you can expect to be roughed up afterwards. Less so in football since fighting is obviously not allowed, but the lineman and everybody always stick up for the QB.[Edited on June 27, 2015 at 6:41 AM. Reason : f]

In soccer, if the other team has an injured player, you kick the ball out of bounds to stop play. The other team, as a courtesy, throws the ball back in play to your defense/open area so that is given back to you.

Cheap shots on the qb are a written rule and retalitory fouls are not part of the game in basketball and will get you fined and suspended if its against a star. There are unwritten rules but these aint them

In baseball if you get hit by a pitch, you don't show weakness and you act like it didn't hurt.

in baseball, it's perfectly fine to cheat by using steroids and HGH, but betting on your team to win will get you banned for life.

Baseball: The dumbest sportI used to love playing baseball as a kid, and even know I still enjoy it as a fan, but holy shit it has the stupidest ingrained culture. Virtually all the unwritten rules are about being "shown up" or based around actual physical harm being caused because of some perceived slight. Worse still is the worship of the "human element" because preventing easily corrected errors and getting things right is less important than preserving an archaic tradition.

Play the rest of the hole with your dick out if you can't hit it past the ladies tees.

if a baseball coach is unhappy with the umpire's call, he's allowed to go out and argue about it, even though the umpire is never going change his mind.]

Stock Car: When someone does something aggressive, the driver they pissed off will probably do something similar to them at some point within the next few races.[Edited on June 27, 2015 at 2:10 PM. Reason : .]

I dunno if it is an unwritten rule or not, but you are definitely expected to evenly space out your drafting positions in competitive distance running and cycling.

college basketball: starting seniors on senior night / playing them if in a blowout situation.college football: playing your scrubs after you've got a runaway.football: no on sides kicks, 2 pt conversions, etc. when you have a runaway. [Edited on June 27, 2015 at 2:28 PM. Reason : .]

we joke about this during tennis a lot, but if you hit a shot and it hits the net and just falls over in a most-unfortunate way for the opponent, you raise your hand like an apology, like you did it on purpose[Edited on June 27, 2015 at 4:17 PM. Reason : grammar]

The most important rule: There's no crying in baseball.

I'm just calling out baseball for taking such a hard stance on something that is arguably not affecting the game and blowing off years and years of rampant cheating.
6/27/2015 8:02:31 PM
I agree that baseball should have responded sooner and more strictly with regard to the steroids era, but the players union played a role in dragging that out.As for players, managers, anyone with significant influence on the game being allowed to gamble, that is just asinine. If you create even a modicum of gray area here, you open a Pandora's box for corruption throughout the sport.

If someone actually pulled a days of thunder and just slammed into someone on victory lane, Im thinking lifetime ban

^^It wasn't victory lane, it was on his victory lap. And NASCAR would be gizzing over themselves so much about the free press that they would prolly suspend the driver for a few races and then welcome him back with a free pass into the "contender" round or whatever bullshit it is they have now

I don't know if it's written or not, but it probably is, if there are multiple classes racing at the same time, the slower cars should maintain their line so the obviously faster car can go by without worrying wtf you're going to do[Edited on June 28, 2015 at 12:15 AM. Reason : ]
6/28/2015 12:15:08 AM
^ That's usually written in, and it doesn't have to be multiple-class races. I know F1 gives a blue flag to lapped cars telling them to GTF out of the way.

soccer: 1) put the ball out of play if there's an injury, irrespective of what the ref says, and especially in rec league. then the team putting the ball back into play returns it to the team that had possession when the incident occurred.2) you knock someone over unintentionally, you help them up. if they're a bitch about it, you are allowed to jaw at them the rest of the game.3) Running up the score late in the game is poor form, unless the team you're playing is a bunch of assholes. 4) You don't do tricks when you're up by a significant margin unless you want your ass beat.[Edited on June 28, 2015 at 12:04 PM. Reason : it's ok to score a lot in the first half, though]

in hockey, I guess its an unwritten rule that when the puck is already gone, and you have time to be turning that way, you still ram the other guy into the wallin soccer its okay to beat the shit out of someone because they are wearing a shirt for the other team

In Basketball. If a player gets lightly fouled while driving and looses the ball out of bonds, the refs don't call a foul, but let the fouled player retain possession.(This gets broken when the replay is implemented in the final minute of a game, and we have to watch a player get hacked in slow motion, but the foul isn't reviewable while possession is).

^I'm not saying it's easy to bunt for a single - but it's generally kinda frowned upon to try to bunt for a hit during a no hitter.

Baseball-Don't talk to or go near a pitcher throwing a no-hitter-If your team has just hit back to back dingers you take at least the first pitch, and maybe you take until he throws a strike-You don't acknowledge to the media that you threw at someone on purpose
